Parklane Seafood, 925 Leesburg Road: 2012 (catering only) 10 comments
I'd never been entirely sure if Parklane Seafood on Leesburg Road were open or closed, but judging from the fact my most recent trip through the area showed the building up for sale, and some recent comments here, I think it is now clear that the restaurant side of the business is closed while the catering side continues.
This building was the old Flamingo Club. It also appears that the back lot has recently been converted into a garden center.
Update 23 April 2018 -- As commenter Rick notes, this building has been stripped of the canopy and door facade that probably dated back to Dick's Flamingo Club:
It looks like the building is prepped to rent as some sort of three suite office.
UPDATE 5 October 2021 -- Now Performance Medical Supply, Inc.:

Cafe Strudel, 118 State Street: September 2012 (Moved) 1 comment
As mentioned in this State story, longtime State Street fixture Cafe Strudel is.. staying on State Street. They have however moved south two blocks to 300 State Street (certainly within easy walking distance from the former location), and have re-opened ahead of schedule. In fact they were still painting the new marquee sign as I walked by, but underneath the ladder were open for business.
UPDATE 1 December 2025: Update tags, add map icon.
Taco Cid / Sammi's Deli, 1931 Broad River Road: August 2012 14 comments
Sammi's Deli still has a Broad River Road location in Irmo near the Publix plaza, but this one in front of the old Intersection Center has changed hands and will become a Nick's.
Nick's seems to be using the Lizard's Thicket "hermit crab" strategy of moving into buildings which were already set up as restaurants. This will be the third new location they have opened or will open over the past year. They have already opened in the old Taco Bell location on Decker and appear close to opening in the old Tony O's Pizza on Saint Andrews.

UPDATE 17 September 2012 -- The comments have reminded me this used to be a Taco Cid so I have added that to the post title. I have also copied commenter Melanie's matchbook scans here:

Carolina Wings & Rib House, 7587 Saint Andrews Road: August 2012 18 comments
Video:
I think taking the time and trouble to program a Thank You message into the roadside message board was a nice touch.
This storefront (which looks to me as though it may once have been a grocery) on Saint Andrews Road north of Lake Murray Boulevard was the first location for the Carolina Wings & Rib House chain. I'm not sure what the "Smokehouse" marquee signifies exactly -- I don't believe I have noticed that at other Carolina Wings locations.

Post Office, SC-261 Paxville South Carolina: 1990s 3 comments
As far as I have ever been able to tell, Paxville is simply a cluster of buildings at the intersection of SC-261 and US-15 in between Pinewood and Manning on the way to the beach.
Driving to the beach growing up, we used to marvel at the little Paxville Post Office, which was the leftmost in the small strip pictured here. The Pawleys Island Post Office (in those days) was certainly tiny, but the Paxville Post Office managed to both out-tiny and out-decrepit it, and I never saw anything anywhere else to compete either. Although we never stopped to get a closer look back in the day, my impression always was that it was an official US Post Office, and not a contract Post Office.
Finally one trip, I believe it was in the 1990s, I noticed that the place was no longer open. For a time the pictured convenience store serving the intersection had a sign up advertising a contract Post Office which I guess functioned as a replacement, but that no longer seems to be the case, and the USPS web site seems to show the nearest facility is now in Pinewood.
UPDATE 12 September 2023 -- The buildings have been razed:
Going by Streetview, this would have happened between August 2019 and September 2021.

Piggly Wiggly Store No. 102 / Display Center, 655 Saint Andrews Road: 2001 / 30 November 2011 29 comments
This was the first location for Piggly Wiggly store number 102.
If I have the story straight, then this store closed in 2001, moved and re-opened in the former Harris Teeter at 4350 Saint Andrews Road (and then closed for good).
After that, the Display Center appliance store moved in, and closed on 30 November 2011, leaving an interesting assortment of items behind.
This location is directly across Jamil Road from former Hilltop Restaurant, and in the same plaza as the former Capitol News Stand.

UPDATE 21 November 2020: Added map icon.
Bojangles 5260 Forest Drive: 20 August 2012 13 comments
Well, given that I did a Forest Drive Bojangles closing just a few days ago, I don't have too much new to say about this one. My sister tells me that she is nearly sure the store was open on Sunday 19 August 2012, so I'm putting the closing date as the following Monday: 20 August. (These shots were taken on 23 August, but the paper in The State rack was for 21 August).
Despite the total lack of signage, several cars pulled into the lot while I was taking these pix.

p>UPDATE 4 September 2013 -- Well, as reported by commenter Amy, demolition has started:
UPDATE 13 December 2013 -- Here are some pictures from 10 November 2013 as the new building started going up. I notice they managed to kill the best tree on the lot:
UPDATE 1 May 2014 -- As mentioned by commenter Ken, this is to be a Panda Express:
UPDATE 19 June 2014 -- Looks like it's pretty close to opening:
UPDATE 28 June 2014 -- Panda Express is open:

Monterrey Restaurante Mexicano Bar & Grill, 2219 Broad River Road: August 2012 19 comments
Continuing yesterday's Mexican theme -- I have often noted this El Monterrey on Broad River Road, just North of I-20, and thought to myself that it was in an awful location: very close to the I-20 interchange (which is busy, and backs up) but without access to a traffic light.
That turns out not to be exactly true, as I found out when I stopped to take these pictures. In fact, the back of the parking lot has a cut-through into the Economy Inn parking lot, and thence to Briargate Circle, which does have a stop-light. It even looks as though they got enought business from the hotel side (or expected to get enough business from the hotel side) to set up the back of the restaurant with a second facade.
Apart from the access situation, I was never tempted to stop here because in my experience the local Monterrey chain comes in behind the Casa Linda, San Jose and La Fogota chains -- nothing drastic, just not one of my preferred marquees. (And if I was in the general area, I would probably hit El Chico anyway).

UPDATE 8 April 2014 -- Well, this place tried to open as La Reyna Del Sur, which I take to be a nightclub concept. Literally it means "Queen of the South", and is also the title of a famous Telemundo telenovela (and the novel it is based on). Just from the picture of the lady in question, it appears she was from *very* far south. At any rate, the sign went up, but the club never opened, and now the building is for sale:
UPDATE 21 July 2016 -- As commenter Andrew mentions, work is going on here. Judging from the interior, it will not be a restaurant, but some sort of office with a front reception counter:
Also, I'm taking the El off the original post title of El Monterrey Restaurante Mexicano Bar & Grill to make it match the sign and fall in the Alphabetical Closings with the other Monterrey locations.
UPDATE 4 October 2017 -- Now a night club called Black Pearl:
Is It Just Me? 17 comments
Or has the Broad River Road / River Drive construction been ongoing since the late 1800s?
UPDATE 9 April 2014 -- And two years later, *still* not done!
UPDATE 19 January 2018 -- I should update here to note that the work is indeed finished, and has been for a while:
Bojangles, 2509 Forest Drive: July 2012 17 comments
I knew a man Bojangles and
He'd dance for you..
But not apparently make chicken anymore.
I've had biscuits at a Bojangles's drive-through a few times in the unhappy event of being up that early, and they were pretty good. I can't speak to the chain's mainstay though, as I'm definitely not a chicken person (some are..), but the store on Two Notch at O'Neil Court seems to get pretty good traffic. Perhaps the nearby Church's Chicken at 2436 Taylor was a factor here.
UPDATE 19 September 2014 -- As mentioned by commenter Andrew, this is now an Asian BBQ place:

UPDATE 23 February 2024 -- This spot is now occupied by a Starbucks:
