We go back to Saint Andrews Center for this closing. While I was leaving the plaza after taking the pictures of Tuesday Morning I noticed that this branch bank was vacant. As it turns out, this has been the case for quite a while (almost two years), as TD Bank decamped for 4320 Sunset Boulevard on 31 July 2015.

Wow, there's "remodeling", and there's "tear out everything down to the bare walls, and some of those too". This is the latter.

The State says:

Once renovations are complete [in fall 2017], the location will include increased parking, new exterior siding, state-of-the-art kitchen equipment and a remodeled dining room with new booths, Wi-Fi access and USB chargers.

Somehow Lizard's Thicket has never seemed like a USB charger kind of place to me..

Tuesday Morning, 326 Saint Andrews Road: May 2017 (moved)   3 comments

This 9 May 2017 State story is a bit inspecific, but we can conclude two things from it:

1) Tuesday Morning is opening a store in the old Hancock Fabrics location on Harbison, and

2) As of May 2017, this store on Saint Andrews Road was still open.

What they *don't* say is that *this* store was moving to Harbison, but given that the Harbision store is apparently now open, and has the same phone number that this one did, I think we can safely conclude that.

Also somewhat interesting, is that the story still refers to this plaza as The Clusters of Whitehall.

UPDATE 9 October 2017 -- Here is the new location of the store in Harbison Court:

As I remarked to my sister, they have been closing this store for years. You could say it started when they did away with the roasted nuts counter, part of the classic heritage that had followed them from Harden Street, but that half-joking aside, it was really apparent in recent years that the store was being hollowed out: there was less and less stock, and more and more empty space. It never got as bad as Belk at Dutch Square with a whole floor abandoned, but it was impossible not to notice. Then, several years ago, they decided it wasn't worth keeping the store open for all the hours that the mall was, and you'd find the mall doors drawn during normal business hours. This year, Sears as a whole finally put Going Concern language in their financial report, and when the latest list of store closings came out, I can't imagine anyone was surprised to see this store on it.

The closing of Sears will leave Columbia Mall with only one anchor store, and Macy's isn't looking that robust either lately.

UPDATE 13 September 2017 -- The place is now emptied out, though there seemed to still be a good number of trucks and other hauling type vehicles in the parking lot on 9 September 2017 when these pictures were taken:

I finally made it out the the break in US-21/Wilson Boulevard the other week. It's not a big break as things go, but as far as I can tell, no work whatsoever has been done on it. I have to admit that this surprises me a little: A US route is supposed to mean something even if they aren't what they were back in the pre-Interstate days.

At this time, Lake Elizabeth is basically a pasture with some streams cutting across it. I am not able to embed a google map for some reason, but if you look at this link you can see an aerial view. It's sort of interesting in that the different zoom levels were taken on different dates. At this zoom: No lake. Zoom in one level farther: Lake!

I did a closing once on the adjacent convenience store. At the time, it was (or was no longer..) an AM PM. Now it is Ez Xpress. For some reason it was not not open on this Saturday evening, but as far as I could tell, it was not defunct.

I noticed this vacant building on Trenholm a few doors down from the Forest Acres town hall a few weeks ago, but based on the unclaimed phonebook at the door step, it was at least before February 2017 that this Coldwell Banker moved to 1711 Gervais Street.

It probably says something about my general powers of observation that I grew up a mile from here and have driven by the building literally thousands of times over the years, but I had no idea it was a Coldwell Banker (and whatever else it has been over the years) in the first place.

UPDATE 21 June 2017: Added Russell & Jeffcoat to the post title based on the comments.

Heroes Convention 2017, Charlotte Convention Center: 17 June 2017   1 comment

Posted at 12:18 am in closing

I took my annual jaunt up to the Charlotte Heroes Convention last Saturday, and couldn't resist a few clouds shots.

Parking is pretty easy considering what you might expect, and it's just a short walk to the convention center.

As you might expect there was a predictable, though certainly not unwelcome theme to this year's costumes.

A bit of a palate cleanser..

Love the "what the hey?" on the guy..

Some steampunk (note the vacuum tubes..)

Whosoever holds this hammer...

By the all-seeing Eye of Agamotto!

I thought I thaw a puddy tat

These are not the cosplayers you are looking for..

The Huntress, and I'm drawing a blank. (UPDATE: Black Canary, I think)

No idea, but I wouldn't cross him.

Cassie Kane, Batwoman (the "Bombshells" continuity version)

Storm...

...and Stormette

Harley Quinn

Never count the classics out

Swag

Walt Kelly's Fairy Tales

"Invisible Monster" remains the scariest Saturday morning cartoon ever..

Henry Kuttner, maybe best known for The Twonky

Planet Stories knew what covers would sell. (And published some decent "planetary adventure". Here's a Poul Anderson I haven't read)

p1420706_tn.jpg

Jack Williamson headed west on a covered wagon as a child, and was writing until 2006.

p1420707_tn.jpg

C. S. Forester better known for "Horatio Hornblower" and The African Queen (though, frankly, the movie is better).

p1420708_tn.jpg

Never heard of Wilcox, but again, a great cover..

p1420709_tn.jpg

Amy Chu, most recently writing Red Sonja.

p1420710_tn.jpg

Looked like an interesting coming-of-age story

No idea, but the guy was such a go-getter cold salesman that I said "Why not?"

Really noticed Randall's art on "The Bitter Earth" back in the day. His first visit to Heroes Con.

Pirate, um, booty.

The TV series is one of the funniest cartoons on today. I highly recommend "Girls Night Out" & "Pyramid Scheme". You just have to basically forget that the characters are drawn from Wolfman & Perez's classic 80s run of "Teen Titans" and go with the stupidity. Thought maybe a signed comic of her favorite show would actually get my niece to read something. We'll see..

As the store on Saint Andrews Road did earlier, the new-ish Aldi in Lexington has closed for a complete remodel. The signs say that they are slated to be back on 29 June 2017. That may be pusing it: That's less than 15 days away, and the store appears completely gutted now.

Looking back, the old Bike To Nature building was still here in August of 2013, and construction of this store still had not started in February of 2014, so they are doing a complete upfit after being open less than three years..

Dollar General, 7949 Broad River Road: 2016 (moved)   2 comments

Also in Friarsgate Plaza across from the currently closing Bi-Lo was this Dollar General.

They list in the February 2017 phonebook, and have a Yelp review from 15 April 2017, so I'm going to say they probably moved around May of 2017. The new, freestanding, location is 7812 Broad River Road which is a bit closer to I-26 exit 101 and on the other side of the road.

(Hat tip to commenter Andrew)

UPDATE 20 June 2017: Changing the closing date from May 2017 to "2016" based on the comments. The phonebook is apparently wrong.
