NTB Tire & Service Centers, 640 Saint Andrews Road: 16 August 2024 3 comments
I believe I got a battery at NTB once and it was fine. I was not really aware of this particular location, but it seems a bit hard to get in and out of to me. Hopefully the staff were able to go to the Harbison location called out on the closing sign.
We'll see what comes in next here, probably something else car related.

Carolina Fine Jewelry, 4708 Forest Drive Suite 2: July 2024 (Moved) no comments
As reported by commenter Matt, Carolina Fine Jewelry has left Forest Acres for the old Dem's location on Lake Murray Boulevard.
As ColaDaily reports, the store has been open in one location or another since 1974. (I'm not sure when they moved into the Forest Drive location, but it's a fairly new building).

UPDATE 15 November 2024 -- Here they are in their new location:
Red Lobster, 1270 Knox Abbott Drive: 26 August 2024 1 comment
This was probably inevitable given the chain's ongoing bankruptcy, but still it's sad to see a decades long area staple go. The ax came down rather quickly here, as CNN reported the latest closing list today, and by the time they had published, this location was already shuttered.
The State has a bit more.

Two Notch Restaurant Neighborhood Grill & Bar, 2325 Two Notch Road: 2023? 2 comments
I think this is closed. There is never any sign of activity when I drive by and the Facebook has not been updated for quite a while, but yet google reviews always has a couple of reactions from the last few months...
Anyway I'm calling it closed, and if anyone knows differently, let me know.
Plaza, Corner of Decker Boulevard & Trenholm Road: Summer 2024 (For Sale) 2 comments
If this plaza has a name, it is not apparent. There have been a number of fairly high-profile stores in there over the years including Winn-Dixie, and Lionel Playworld, but none recently and the main building, which now houses a plasma center and a comedy club, is pretty beat up and decrepit on the Trenholm end.
Perhaps the current owners have given up on bringing the place back up as I noticed a For Sale sign on the property last month. Of course that doesn't mean much as I think Midlands Shopping Center has been on the block for years with no takers.
Cricket Wireless Authorized Retailer, 736 West Main Street: Summer 2024 no comments
When I was getting pictures of Badcock a week or so ago, I noticed that this little Cricket storefront in the same plaza was closed. Google reviews suggest it was probably this summer as there is an owner response from "a month ago".
Redbox, Everywhere: Summer 2024 4 comments
Well, we are one step closer to doing away with physical media as Redbox comes to an end.
DVD rental service Redbox is set to shut down after 22 years in business, as streaming continues to dominate the at-home entertainment market.
Redbox’s parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, changed its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, filed last month, to a Chapter 7 liquidation case on Wednesday. The conversion signifies that the company couldn’t come up with a repayment plan for its outstanding debts and will soon turn to selling off assets to pay back creditors.
If you had movies on the Redbox app, well, you probably don't...
Roku has finally axed the Redbox app from its platform. Redbox parent company Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June and moved to Chapter 7 in July, signaling the liquidation of its assets. However, the app has remained available but not fully functional in various places, leaving customers wondering if they will still be able to access content they bought. This development, however, mostly squashes any remaining hope of salvaging those purchases.
...
There is also uncertainty about what will happen to the 24,000 remaining Redbox kiosks and their DVDs. As Chicken Soup filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, it’s expected that the kiosks will be taken down, but we don’t know when or how they'll be disposed of.
Last month, CVS filed a motion [PDF] asking the US Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (where Chicken Soup filed for bankruptcy) to allow it to “dispose of” thousands of Redbox kiosks. In its filing, CVS said that its contract with Redbox ended in 2023, at which point Redbox was obligated to remove “over 2,500 kiosks” from CVS stores, but many remained.
As of tonight the unit at the Beltline & Forest Walgreens is up and running, but the movies don't look to have been updated in over a month.
Tree Top Inn, 3932 West Palmetto Street (Florence): 2023 2 comments
While I was in Florence recently, I decided to get off at I-95 Exit 157 to check out the old Young's Plantation Inn which I had done a closing for and which had been reported as torn down (it was). While I was there I noticed that the motel almost across US-76 from the old Young's site was apparently closed as well. This was the The Tree Top Inn. As you can see from the link, their website is still up, but there were clearly no customers, and the place is now behind a closed fence. The most recent google reviews are from about a year ago, so I will go with 2023 for a closing date.
Actually Exit 157 seems to be hard on motels lately as I noticed another had been razed (before Young's) and a third was clearly also closed. I may do closings on those eventually as I did get some pictures.
Badcock Home Furniture & More, 736 Saint Andrews Road Suite A: August 2024 no comments
Here's the Saint Andrews Road location of Badcock. As we have seen several times recently, the chain is bankrupt and closing all stores.
St. Andrews Shopping Center lost another anchore back in 2013 and came through it OK. We'll have to see what happens this time.
JC's Lexington Bowl: 5380 Augusta Road: Late August 2024 no comments
Commenter Heath notes that JC's Lexington Bowl has announced on their Facebook page that they are closing at the end of August. From the posted message, it sounds like they would rather not, but the economic times are just too rough. That's a shame, as they have been open since 1989.
