Carolina Wings & Rib House, 7587 Saint Andrews Road: August 2012 18 comments
Video:
I think taking the time and trouble to program a Thank You message into the roadside message board was a nice touch.
This storefront (which looks to me as though it may once have been a grocery) on Saint Andrews Road north of Lake Murray Boulevard was the first location for the Carolina Wings & Rib House chain. I'm not sure what the "Smokehouse" marquee signifies exactly -- I don't believe I have noticed that at other Carolina Wings locations.

They filed for bankruptcy a few months ago. Like I said in my last post, don't be surprised if the one on Clemson Rd closes soon. I was just at the St Andrews location a few weeks ago, only my second time ever going there, to see Tokyo Joe.

That shopping center also housed the Irmo Post Office for many years.

I remember the Irmo Post Office Mike references. What happened was sometime in the late 90s (right around July 4th of the year if memory serves me correctly), the building suffered an electrical fire and temporarily moved until the current Irmo Post Office facility was built.
I have looked for a plaque on the Irmo Post Office to figure out when said facility was built the way many other postal facilities have on their buildings but have yet to find one.

The temporary post office was in the Kroger shopping center. I can't remember if they moved back to this location for a while, or if it moved to the new location?
I'm pretty sure the drug store in this next to the Winn Dixie was a Rite Aid? I can't remember if this is part of the same stall where the Village Idiot was located, but they had a place in this same part of the shopping center in the late 90s for about a year.

Heath, now that you mention it, I recall it being in the Irmo Village temporarily. I think it remained in the Irmo Village until the current facility was built (wish I knew when it was completed, but I'd say sometime in the 1998/99 timeframe)

The drug store was just to the right of the Winn-Dixie. It was originally the Village Pharmacy (a mom & pop joint) until it was bought out by one of the chains. I'm pretty sure the leftmost part of Carolina Wings is where the old drug store used to be. It's been so many years, it's hard for me to remember how everything was situated. The post office was located toward the right end of the strip tucked into a little corner storefront. It did, indeed, catch fire over the July 4th holiday (not sure what year). I remember that my Citi credit card bill was destroyed in the fire and it took me forever to convince them of the fact so they would drop the late payment fee.

In all my infinite wisdom, I didn't notice it was a movie as it looked like all the other still images posted. Ted has a night version of it and mine is daylight (so take your pick)

The bartender at the Lexington location tells me that they will be closing in March to remodel and change into a steakhouse venue. He also said the Red bank location will remain a wings place.

Yet the signage of this one remains...it makes no sense to me why stores close and keep signage up...

Andrew, the signs probably remain behind because the owners have burned through all their cash and removal is an added expense.

There was work being done here on Friday. I wanted to stop and ask what was going on, but did not.

That part of the strip mall used to house a Winn-Dixie and a drug store that I can't remember the name of (I think it started out as a local store). I noticed the marquee when I left O'Reilly's auto parts today but couldn't get close enough for people parking at the curb trying to read the sign on the door. I worked at the Winn-Dixie during high school and got chills when I rode past the parking place where I had my tires and wheels stolen off my car while at work all those many, many years ago. Yes, there was crime in Irmo in the 70's....lol!! I hadn't been to this place in years but I remember it used to cater to just about everyone. They used to have an arcade and pool tables along with the bar and restaurant. I guess it would be like a 'poor mans' Dave and Busters'. After snooping on here and seeing where some other locations have closed makes me wonder what's up with the franchise??
