This little building, the parking area limited and hemmed in by the hill rising to Shakespeare Road behind it, has been many things over the years -- mostly in the Bar / Social Club category. What I first recall noicing it as, however, was a long run during the 1970s when it was an adult book store, one of several then along Two Notch (two of which, I believe, remain from that era).

The last time I noticed it in operation was as Moonlight Bar & Grill as shown in the first set of pictures from 24 January 2012.

UPDATE 10 February 2021 -- It appears that somebody plowed a car into this building recently:

Also adding map icon and added "Chateau" in front of "Adult Book Store" in the post title based on the comments.

Well, it's old news now, but Sears at Columbiana Centre is closing, and today was the first time I was able to get out that way to get some shots. I'm going ahead with a pretty-well-in-advance closing to give us a landing page to talk about it, and because it's pretty big news. Hopfully I will get inside shots for an update at some point. Certainly the pre-printed closeout signs in these exterior shots are pretty familiar to us all by now (blurry or not..).

It appears that Belk will be taking over some, though not all of this space.

Frankly, given how hollowed-out the Columbia Mall store is at this point, I expected it to go first.

Ole Town Antique Mall, 2956 Broad River Road: December 2013   16 comments

I still have not verified that this building was once a 'Brown Sign With The Sewing Machine In The Corner' Factory Outlet", though I will try to remember to check at the library sometime soon. At any rate, Ole Town Antique Mall was definitely what I knew the place as, seemingly forever.

Through no particular intention of mine, (especially as I do like the State Street one), this has turned out to be the only antique mall in Columbia I've visited in the last several years. Over the years, I've bought a good few books and magazines here, including old Sandlapper magazines which have provided ad scans for a number of my posts. The last time I was here, back in early December as I recall, I picked up several WWII era Columbia newspapers, with an eye to using ads from them eventually.

The place had a rather interesting layout which essentially abuted two buildings together with two large sets of doors connecting them. The larger of the two buildings was the one on the North side, and it seemed to be the preferred location, with more furniture and more elaborate booth setups. The rear (South) building had only one main corridor and was more devoted to miscellany.

In recent years, miscellany had spilled out into the parking lot, which was festooned with tables of, well, junk which stayed out 24/7 but, which, as the signs helpfully reminded you, was not, in fact, free.

The whole lot has been posted for sale for many years, and I suppose the owners were content to wait for their asking price and run the business until they got it. When that finally did happen, things proceded apace, and the mall was gone before I actually heard that it had been sold.

According to this notice, the final auction of the remaining merchandise was held on 5 January 2014, and apparently everything is now cleaned out.

As of yet, there is no indication of what the new owners will do with the property.

New Life Fitness World, 265 Charter Oak Court: 31 December 2013   3 comments

Well, the post on the Irmo location seems to have gotten a bit of traction today, so why not make a clean breast of it and post the final one?

The Lexington New Life Fitness World is off of Charter Oak Road, which connects US-1 and US-378 which are more or less parallel at that point. The gym is on a little court that seems to have some sort of failed building showcase on it, which I may post another day, though it is well behind the set of empty foundations.

This building is done in a completely different style than the other two, and seems to have had at least one other business co-located inside. There is something rather sad about the forlorn swim-noodles.

The latest Carolina Wings to close is this one in Lexingtion near the Regal theaters.

As you can see here, things are alreay in-train to reopen this building as Daddy Mac's of which, their facebook page says:

Daddy Mac's Restaurant was created by three brothers as a tribute to their Grandfather, whom they affectionately called Daddy Mac. This restaurant brings back childhood memories filled with laughter, fun, larger-than-life stories and wonderful aromas of great meals being cooked by Daddy Mac in his kitchen.
The grandsons' vision is to open their kitchen and share with you, those comforting and delicious meals that invite laughter and good times with friends and family. We hope that you will take home fond memories of your own.

and their Help Wanted ad on CraigsList says:

We are a full service restaurant that will specialize in hand cut steaks, pastas, burgers, speciality appetizers & desserts. We also offer one of Lexington's largest craft beer selections as well as an extensive wine and liquor list.

UPDATE 20 April 2020: Well, Daddy Mac's closed (which I will just note here rather than do a separate closing) and this place is oce more a Carolina Wings & Rib House. Also, updating tags and adding map icon.

Forest Acres Pet Supply & Grooming, 3612 Covenant Road: December 2013 (Moved?)   6 comments

I just noticed yesterday that Forest Acres Pet Supply & Grooming, next door to the old Powers 60 Minute Cleaners in Ravenwood had closed. This was an independent pet accessories store which had been there a good few years (and outlasted some big box stores like Superpetz).

You can see it in operation in the background of this shot:

UPDATE 21 January 2014 -- Interesting. Commenter Bryan notes a new pet store at 4230 Bethel Church Road, and when I took a look at it, I saw that the name is different, it's Super Starr Pets, but the phone number is the same as that for Forest Acres Pet Supply. That certainly argues for some connection -- perhaps one owner is carrying on after another retired or something like that. Anyway, here it is:

Based on the available evidence, it appears to me that Monday 6 January was the last day of operation for the Lexington Wild Hare, on US-1 north of I-20. This closing leaves the chain with two restaurants: one in the Vista and one on the Western segment of Bush River Road near the former Irmo Kmart.

I've always enjoyed the food at the various Al-Amir locations over the years, though they have sometimes seemed to operate on rather an amateur basis, where you might not get the side-items the menu said came with your meal, or get your glass refilled in a timely manner. Still, I'm sad to see this one (in the old Shane's Rib Shack location, and which was, I believe basically a replacement for the Sparkleberry Crossing one), or indeed any one close.

I think that at current, the one in the old Stuffy's location at University Corner on Main is the only one open.

After the Forest Acres location closed in the fall of 2012, this Sunset Boulevard location was the chain's only remaining Midlands (or indeed South Carolina) location. In fact, looking at the Yumilicious website, it appears that all the remaining locations are in Texas.

I'm afraid I never stopped at either location, having more or less given up on anything yogurt related years ago since it all seems to be non-fat, or low-fat today. If I'm going to have a frozen treat, it's going to be full-fat..
