Phar-Mor / Superpetz, 2744 Decker Boulevard: Mid August 2010 11 comments
I only went into Superpetz a few times. I'm pretty sure I got pigs ears for my sister's dogs there once, and think I was in there one other time, though I can't remember what for. The place was kind of a Wal Mart for pet paraphernalia, with the non-WalMart touch that you could actually take your pets inside with you.
According to the chain's web site, this was the only Columbia store, which makes me suspect issues with the chain as a whole rather than the standard "things don't do well on Decker" issue. This closing is a further blow to the Fashion Place plaza which housed Superpetz, although it did recently make good the Cici's Pizza vacancy with the opening of Gabby's Pizza in that spot.

UPDATE 8 Oct 2010: Added Phar-Mor to the post title based on the comments.
UPDATE 10 September 2011 -- It appears that Goodwill will be moving across the plaza from its current location in back to this location:

This stinks. This place is just a few minutes from my house, and was the only place I could reliably find my rabbit's food and litter, as well as my cat's food. I can understand why they closed, since I was usually one of only three or four people in there. Petsmart is nice, but I always get the big box vibe when I'm there.
Not to go off on a tangent, but does anyone remember the old mall pet stores? I've only lived here for 8 years, but I'm sure the malls had them. Yes, I know they got their dogs from puppy mills, and I'm not endorsing them, but I hadn't thought about mall pet stores in... well, a long time. Just one of those things you forget...

Matthew, I do remember the mall pet stores...I remember there being one in Columbia Mall YEARS ago. It was called Pet-Go-Round, I believe. I was just a kid then and knew nothing of puppy mills, so I always begged my parents to stop in there so I could ogle the dogs and other unfortunate animals in there.

It's certainly the Fashion Place plaza right across from Dent, and at the corner of Trenholm Road Extension and Decker Boulevard. I don't recall it having a Phar-Mor, (the one I recall is the one on Harbison), but then I was out of town for most of Phar-Mor's rise and fall.
It definitely had The Italian Oven and Cici's Pizza.

That's right, it was a Phar-Mor. I remember buying my first CDs there when I was in high school around 1991. They had the best prices. That was back when they were sold in the "longboxes".

OK, I'll update the post title to reflect that.

Yep, I can definitely confirm it was a Phar-Mor! My mom and I used to shop there...before it became Superpetz...

I remember this being Ross around 1987, Then Drug Emporium for a couple of years, then Phar Mor from about 90-93, then the store was split into Staples and the pet store. I lost track of what happened after that. Didn't Ross end up reopening at Fashion Place, perhaps in the old TJ Maxx?

I miss going to Superpetz which was always kind of grimy but in a good way. I remember going in elementary school (90s) and getting supplies for our fish, dogs and cats. I really liked that place!

I loved Superpetz. My family shopped there for 15 years buying items for our cats. It was always a very friendly place to visit and they had one of the best selections of toys for both dogs and cats I have ever seen. They sold at least two cat toys that neither Pet Smart or Petco carry.
It was an issue with the whole chain rather than the "things don't do well on Decker" excuse. I wrote an e-mail to corporate and found out they closed or are closing all of their South Carolina stores because of a decline in revenue and more people buying pet items at big-box stores and discount stores. The Charleston and Summerville ones are in the process of closing right now.
A shame because while not as bright and shiny as PetSmart, this store was a really good place to shop. I always enjoyed it and we miss it.
