Dollar General, 5131 Lower Richland Boulevard: May 2019 (Moved) 2 comments
I like Dollar General well enough. It's kind of like a slightly down-market drugstore without a pharmacy, and can be easier to zip in and out of than a Wallgreen's and much easier than a Walmart. I'm not sure what the problem here was. It could be that they just want to build a freestanding store in the area as that is what most of their new stores are, and the area is building up. On the other hand, maybe it's not built up enough and they weren't making any money. (In other words: I don't know!).
There are some good exterior and interior pictures of the store in operation here.

UPDATE 12 June 2019 -- Adding "Moved" to the post title as it turns out this Dollar General has moved to a new freestanding store per the comments.
UPDATE 11 July 2019 -- Here is the freestanding new location around the corner:
Rite Aid, 2300 Decker Boulevard: 2018 10 comments
We'll stay with Decker Village for another closing. The store at the far right end of the plaza started as an Eckerd, transitioned into a Rite Aid and is now a Walgreen's.
This is the least Walgreen's looking Walgreen's in Columbia, and is the only one I can think of off the top of my head that is not a standalone building. To be fair, it wasn't a very Rite Aid looking Rite Aid either.
It's Personal, 7011 Saint Andrews Road Suite 1: Summer 2019 no comments
One of the congratulatory graffiti on the windows of this Murraywood Centre personalized gifts store mentions that they have been in business for 26 years, which is certainly a good run and prelude to a well deserved retirement. Their Facebook page has some of the details.
It looks like the final sale is already ongoing, so you'd better get down there soon if you want to check it out.

Moe Levy's, 1727 Laurel Street: April 2019 no comments
After I did a closing for Moe Levy's on Assembly back in 2014, I somehow failed to notice that the store had restarted on Laurel Street after some time off. The State has that story here.
Recently they called it quits for good, and The State has that story as well. Ninety-nine years is certainly a good run!
Traffic was slower at the new, tucked away, location, and retail is certainly a different creature than it was in 1920, but then again recent events show that huge chains don't know what to make of it either.
Heroes & Dragons, 1621 Broad River Road: Early May 2019 (Moved) 1 comment
I last wrote about Heroes & Dragons in 2016 when they moved from their standalone building further down Bush River Road back to Boozer Shopping Center (where they had been before, in the Manifest wing).
Now they have moved again, this time much further down Bush River Road, almost at I-20 in fact, and are, I believe in the old Power One / Sissy's Furniture building:
I've bought a number of things at the various locations over the years; I'll have to get by the new store as well.

UPDATE 7 June 2019 -- The new location:
Mattress Firm, 5061 Sunset Boulevard: Fall 2018 no comments
Here's another store caught in the great Mattress Firm bankruptcy apocalypse of 2018. This one is right next to the Capital Bank and shares the same vast open spaces back overlook.
You can see it with the Mattress Firm signage still up here at the LoopNet listing
Jewelry Warehouse, 228 Knox Abbot Drive: 2 May 2019 8 comments
Well, the situation for Jewelry Warehouse and its associated sports memoribilia stores seems rather confusing. Here is a State story on the situation, and here is one from Columbia Business Report.
I think the upshot is that while there are statements from the business that they will be back, those have probably been overtaken by events (and by the Department of Revenue). The sums owed seem quite large, and I suspect they were optimistically thinking they could turn the situation around, and overextended their resources without being able in the end to make that happen.

UPDATE 17 May 2021 -- To be an East Bay Deli:
Also adding map icon.
UPDATE 8 October 2024 -- As mentioned by commenter Andrew, this is to be a Five Below:
Lifeway Christian Store, 1009 Bower Parkway: 5 comments
I did not know that Lifeway was the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, which obviously is not going anywhere. They are, however, unable to keep these stores open during the ongoing great-unretailing, and plan to close all 170 of them. The plan is to maintain an online presence, though how that will work out I don't know given that Amazon certainly lists religious books.
This storefront is in an odd little plaza that wants to be connected to the one behind it, but isn't, making access harder than it needs to be.
Somewhat ironically, this store moved here fairly recently, previously having been on the other side of Harbison Boulevard.

Walmart Neighborhood Market, 3603 Broad River Road: 29 March 2019 7 comments
The State says this store opened in January of 2016, giving it just a three year run. The company states they gave it a
thoughtful review process
which I take to mean it was losing money hand-over-fist given they could not have paid off the initial investment in that period and would, I suspect, have stayed if there were a reasonable prospect of doing so in the near term.
Given how long it has taken to re-purpose other buildings on Broad River Road, I see this building as an empty white elephant for years to come.

Sole Boutique, 4517 Forest Drive: 2018 no comments
I was not really aware of this little place on Forest Drive, behind The Happy Cafe and in-between Tombo Grille and The Village Idiot. What I can tell from its google reviews is that it sold clothes and shoes. I believe it had the same suite as the former Tag It Art
UPDATE 12 May 2021 -- This is to become Flour Power a kids' party cooking studio:
