Dollar General, 4045 West Beltline Boulevard: late September 2019 1 comment
As you can see in the first picture above, barely, and only if you click-through, the closing of PIggly Wiggly and the opening of Roses in that space left Edens Plaza with two discount stores literally right next to each other. In the event, it looks like Dolar General has decided the situation wasn't tenable and closed shop. Of course, this also aligns with their current strategy of moving away from strip-mall stores to stand-alone locations, so I wouldn't be surprised if that were a factor as well.

J. Peters Grill & Bar, 2005 North Beltline Boulevard: 14 June 2019 (Reflagged) 8 comments
I was driving down Beltline today, and noticed that J. Peters Grill & Bar in the old D's Wings location was gone.
In its place was J.R. Cash's Grill & Bar. A little google work found this story from Greenville establishing what happened. It seems that J. Peters was run by a partnership which has just split up. One partner retains the name, and most of the stores. The other partner gets four of the stores (including the two here in Columbia), but must rename them. The "new" business retains the same phone number, and according to the google reviews most of the menu. I'll note that the linked story is a little odd in that it only names one partner.
As for this particular J. Peters -- I only stopped there once. I spent an hour waiting for a cheese-burger. Apparently the only cook in the kitchen had just quit by walking out the door. I know that was atypical, but there are enough places for cheese-burgers that I never got around to going back.
Tres Bien Hair Salon, 714 Beltline Boulevard: 2016 no comments
I have had my eye on this building, just past Maurice's, for years, as despite there having been a number of businesses in it, I never saw that any of them were ever open. Or at least that's how it appeared to me.
I have more pictures somewhere, and when they turn up, I will post them.
At any rate, it appears that after Tres Bien left, the place got a major facelift, though it does not as yet seem to be leased.
UPDATE 7 June 2019 -- Here are some (not all) of the additional pictures I mentioned. These date from 13 March 2016, so I am changing the date in the post title from "2018" to "2016".
UPDATE 10 July 2019 -- Interesting, Here's what's not coming to this spot:
The owner of a Mauldin massage parlor has withdrawn her request to open one near downtown Columbia.
Yuzhen Zhu had applied with the Columbia Board of Zoning Appeals for a special exception to permit a massage parlor on Beltline Boulevard near Devine Street. The U-Relax Massage parlor would have been located next door to Maurice’s barbecue at 714 N. Beltline Blvd.
City Council member Moe Baddourah said city staff told him the request has been withdrawn permanently.
Wells Fargo, 3500 Forest Drive: March 2019 6 comments
The de-branching of American banks continues with this Wells Fargo location at the southeast corner of Forest Drive and Beltline Boulevard being the latest example to feature here.
I had actually been inside this bank, as my sister and I took care of some shared business there. It was what you would expect, and a perfectably acceptable experience. The place is also actually a little easier to get in and out of than you would think, as there is a back exit to a road paralleling Forest drive behind the mirror buildings that brings you back out at a more convenient location.

UPDATE 1 May 2019: Updated tags.
UPDATE 15 August 2019 -- As mentioned in the comments, this building has now been razed:
The Cat Clinic, 4039 Trenholm Road: Winter 2018 (Moved) no comments
The Cat Clinic veterinarian's office has moved from 4039 Trenholm Road (where it followed a coffee house) to 4600 Trenholm road, next door to Lollipop Lane daycare.
No word on whether it moved on On Little Cat Feet.
UPDATE 5 November 2020 -- This building is setting up to be a StrongHold Gym:
UPDATE 12 May 2021 -- The gym, which was to have opened last year seems to have stalled out:
Golden Chick, 2089 North Beltline Boulevard: 18 February 2019 6 comments
Golden Chick was the follow-on to Wendy's in this (extensively remodeled) spot.
When I did a closing for the Manning location of Golden Chick, I wondered if the Columbia location might be next, as they opened about the same time. Interestingly however, google does not pull up any stories about closings or the chain being in trouble. To the contrary, there are several stories to the effect that 2019 is looking to be a banner year for Golden Chick, so perhaps this chicken is only crossing the road locally.

UPDATE 21 February 2019: Fixed transposed address in post title and tags.
Jade Palace, 3115 Farrow Road: January 2018 no comments
Jade Palace was the follow-on operation in this building to China Dragon, which was a follow-on (though probably not a direct one) to Popeye's Chicken who built the building in the rocky-facade style they used at the time.
Commenter Thomas noted that Jade Place had opened in February of 2010, so they had about an eight year run, which is not bad.
The building was not vacant for long at all (it is now a wing joint), which makes me wonder if perhaps the ownership is still the same.

UPDATE 18 November 2019 -- Correct address from 3113 Farrow to 3115 Farrow. Add map icon.
Gymboree, Richland Mall: Summer 2017 7 comments
Well, there has been speculation for a while, what with Gymboree's Chapter 11 filing, but the other shoe dropped today:
SAN FRANCISCO – Children's clothing seller Gymboree Corp. is closing 350 stores as its works to restructure in bankruptcy.
The San Francisco-based company said Tuesday that it's mostly closing Gymboree and Crazy 8 stores. It also operates Janie and Jack stores. The company will have more than 900 locations after the stores are shut down.
The full closing list is here, and includes, unsurprisingly, this Richland Mall store, as well as the one at Sandhill. The closing sales are supposed to start on 18 July.
I took these pictures back in early June and even then, the whole store was 50% off -- I don't think this is a big surprise to them.
I have to admit I had never heard of Janie and Jack or Crazy 8.
UPDATE 3 February 2021 -- Here's another picture I just came across apparently from 26 April 2013:
Also adding a map icon.
Wine And Design, Richland Mall: March 2017 (moved) no comments
Today's closing comes from commenter Mr. BO, who says:
A strange eclectic shop right across where I enter the office in the Richland Fashion mall. Wine & Design apparently was a place where you can tip a few glasses and do some painting. (odd combo). Some of my fellow workers noted that there were times when the paint would be tracked outside of the door. (Guess things got messy there) I was suspicious about a month ago when I mall maintenance taking out a sink.
Now I see this in pic # 2.
At least it's a move and not a closing.
I admit I was entirely unaware of this place though I have walked the whole Mall at least once or twice in the last year.
What wine goes best with abstract expressionism?
(Hat tip to commenter Mr. BO, obviously)
JackSon's Southern Kitchen, Richland Mall: 28 November 2016 (moved) 16 comments
Since S & S moved out of this Richland Mall slot, nothing has stuck, with both Sadie's and now Jackson's moving on.
In this case we have a move instead of a closing, and JackSon's should now be open at 1213 Sunset Boulevard, which is, of course, the former location of Ms. B's Southern Kitchen and The Southern Skillet.
Man, this wing of the Mall is creepy empty now!
And
I think they want you to go left.

UPDATE 23 January 2017 -- I got by the new location on Sunset last weekend. Apparently they are still not quite open:
