Tripp's Fine Cleaners, 2750 North Lake Drive: 2023 2 comments
I noticed another closed Tripp's location the other day, this one in a nice end-cap at Murray Landing. Streetview says it was open as recently as September of 2022, so I'm going with 2023 for the closing date.
Michael's Cleaners, 7000 Garners Ferry Road: 31 October 2022 2 comments
Here's another drycleaners which has recently shut down. Michael's was in a somewhat oddly situated lot in the midst of all the intersection crazyness at the Garners Ferry Road/Leesburg Road/I-77 interchange. It struck my notice a few years ago because their signboard was advertising a computer position, and I had to wonder what that would entail.
From their closing sign, it apppears that Halloween was their last day of operation.
Ed Robinson Laundry & Dry Cleaning, 2551 Forest Drive: October 2020 1 comment
I noticed some new signage on Ed Robinson Laundry & Dry Cleaning (in the Ed Robinson building, as it turns out) on Forest Drive, and although the new name is not visible from the street, a drive through the parking lot confirmed that this location is now a Michael's Cleaners.
I have always liked the spire in front of this building, and it looks especially good at night with the blue illumination. I took a few twilight pictures on another day that I will add to the post eventually.
Ed Robinson Laundry & Dry Cleaning, 1615 North Beltline Boulevard: 17 August 2019 no comments
It seems to me this nice little building in the little group at the corner of Beltline & Trenholm has been a number of cleaners over the years. I have it in my mind it was an Arnold Palmer's once, and google says it was a Masters fairly recently as well.
UPDATE 5 November 2020 -- This place is now Il Bucato, a takeout Italian joint, where [m]enu items at Il Bucato will include pizza, salads, hot subs and pasta dishes.
The story from ColaDaily is here.
The pictures below were taken during the final stage before opening:
Also adding a map icon..
Tripp's Fine Cleaners, 1339 Broad River Road: Early 2016 (Open Again) no comments
Oddly, this is the second location of Tripp's Fine Cleaners to be affected by fire in recent years. You will recall that they were also caught in the Spring Valley Commons fire of 14 October 2013. Hopefully, this location will be able to rebuild more quickly than the Two Notch location.
UPDATE 30 August 2016 -- Grand re-opening is now scheduled for 12 September 2016:
UPDATE 23 September 2016 -- Open again:
UPDATE 1 February 2024: Updating tags and adding map icon.
Eagle Cleaners / My Best Cleaners, 922 Sunset Boulevard: 2010 (moved?) 2 comments
Here's another rainy day set of pictures...
This little dry-cleaning building is more or less across from the old Maunz Electronics and just down from the former Sub Cabin. Judging from the sign, it was also an Eagle Cleaners at one time as well. It appears that they did a bit of light office support as well as cleaning. The sign suggests that they moved, but I am unable to find another location for them in the phonebook.
Sunshine Cleaners / Martha's Era Antiques & Collectibles, 2737 River Drive: 1990s 7 comments
I don't drive down River Drive all that often, but when I do, I always note this building. It seems to me that it is a close twin to the Mediterranean Tea Room building on Devine Street, although the Tea Room building has had a lot more work done to it, especially in the last few years.
I had it in the back of my mind that it hadn't been vacant all that long, but when I finally stopped to look and take these pictures, it was obvious from the state of the interior that it had been empty a good while.
Googling the address turned up an interesting story, which apparently did not play out as planned. These three PDFs of 2008 zoning board minutes here, here and here tell the story.
Many years ago, the place was a cleaner (they never mention the name) and then Martha's Era (they never explicitly give that name either, but it seems pretty clear that there was only one antique business ever there). By 2008, they were talking about the building having been vacant for 20 years, and indeed, I cannot find Martha's in the 1998 phonebook.
At any rate, a new tenant wanted to lease the building (still owned by the Martha's proprietor) to open a largely take-out pizza business, apparently to be called Neighboorhood Pie. The big stumbling block was parking, of which the site has very little. There was a lot of back and forth on that issue, and the board suggested he make some new plans and come back later, which he did, rounding up a parking lease arrangement with a nearby church (which had no issues since the restaurant would not be open Sunday, and would not sell alcohol). There were a few minor issues with neighboring residents, but those were all ironed out, and the board gave the goahead in Sept 2008.
For whatever reason however, the restaurant never happened, and from the appearance of the interior, never even got to the "starting refit" stage. The property is currently up for lease once again, and apparently the owner is willing for the building to come down if necessary. That would be a shame as it is rather distinctive with its street-side pillar and vintage canopy.
UPDATE 20 Nov 2010: Commenter Mike identifies the place as originally a Sunshine Cleaners which makes sense given its resemblance to the one on Covenant. I've upadated the post title.
