I was driving down Beltline today, and noticed that J. Peters Grill & Bar in the old D's Wings location was gone.

In its place was J.R. Cash's Grill & Bar. A little google work found this story from Greenville establishing what happened. It seems that J. Peters was run by a partnership which has just split up. One partner retains the name, and most of the stores. The other partner gets four of the stores (including the two here in Columbia), but must rename them. The "new" business retains the same phone number, and according to the google reviews most of the menu. I'll note that the linked story is a little odd in that it only names one partner.

As for this particular J. Peters -- I only stopped there once. I spent an hour waiting for a cheese-burger. Apparently the only cook in the kitchen had just quit by walking out the door. I know that was atypical, but there are enough places for cheese-burgers that I never got around to going back.

  1. I frequent the one in Chapin and it's as good, if not better, than it was when it was J Peters. The owner seems to be trying to really make it excellent and maintain a high standard. I hope they do well, we need that sort of nicer place in Chapin.

  2. Does anyone understand the obvious connection of this restaurant and Copper River and California Dreaming? They all have very similar items, especially that salad that is called the " Salad" with the same ingredients and house dressing, and the buttery croissant.

I asked someone working at Cash's and they claimed there was no connection. I find that hard to believe.

  3. @Eddie. Believe it. California Dreaming is owned by the man who own Green's and is based out of Atlanta. The people who own Copper River ae based out of Greenville.

  4. Has Copper River improved in recent months? We had a horrible experience there about a year ago, and felt sure it would close within weeks. At about that time, there were a ton of negative reviews online too. The fact that it's still open makes me think maybe they fixed things?

  5. I remember the bad reviews Heath mentioned being discussed here and can think of a bad experience of my own we had prior to that I had...but I did eat there last October for my mom's birthday and it was good...the thing of it is, restaurants experience regular turnover and so chances are that changes in staff have turned things around...I know that Scholtsky's in Lexington had issues that they brought in new management to try to turn things around but unfortunately things were too far gone so that's why it closed so it appears to me as if Copper River caught things without it getting to that point...

  6. Very true Andrew.

Turnover can sink a restaurant faster than the Titanic sank.

  7. I tried eating at J Peters twice, it was mediocre. Sad to hear it's really just a name change was hoping maybe something better moved in.
