Caper House / College Quik Mart, 1200 Whaley Street: August 2026 7 comments
I've probably seen this place one time or another, but since I get down this part of Whaley approximately never, I could not have told you it was there. It looks to have been a pretty generic place for college kids to get snacks, beer & gas or pick up an Amazon order. Unfortunately now, it is overrun with feral cats which someone is feeding.
I'm going with August for a date here since that's when I heard about it, but looking inside the place, it could have been closed earlier based on the state of cables in the roof etc. It also appears to me that the power is totally off here, including to the Amazon Lockboxes.

UPDATE 29 August 2026: Commenter Badger says this was originally Caper House, so I have added that to the post title. Not sure if that was a chain or a one-off.

This was originally called "Caper House," which was later bought out by The Pantry. I know for years a chap named "Wally" ran it.

Shows how much i pay attention to this place. I ride by it EVERY morning M-F on my way to work. Didn't even noticed it was closed.

Not only is it demolished, they removed the underground gas tanks. Here something to note as well. There used to be 3 houses, maybe duplexes or apartment houses, next to this place. 2 of them were demolished months ago. The last one was demolished earlier this week. It seems like everything on this block is gone now. I wonder if USC bought the whole block.
I went in this place a few times back maybe 5 or 6 years ago. I stopped going because the owners let the homeless camp out on the side of the building and beg for money.

@Sidney. Those houses on Whaley St. were the remnants of a mill village connected to the textile mill that is now the Lofts.

I believe that whole block at Main, Whaley, Sumter and Heyward has been razed. Also, another building, Center for Predictive Maintenance, a block over on the corner of Catawba and Sumter has been torn down as well.

That place had been in business since at the least the 1970s.
