Burger King, Columbiana Centre: Summer 2017 12 comments
As mentioned several times in Have Your Say, the Burger King at Columbiana Mall is closed "temporarily". There's not any explanation on the sign making that claim, and apparently it has been several months. Ordinarily after such a length of time, I might write off the sign as wishful thinking, but in this case the equipment clearly has not been stripped, so who knows.
Almost as soon as I got inside to take this picture, somebody pulled the fire alarm, and everybody headed for the exits.

UPDATE 9 October 2017 -- As mentioned in the comments this spot is setting up to be an American Deli so I'm taking the "temporary" off the post title:
UPDATE 6 February 2019: Change the location from "Columbiana Mall" to "Columbiana Centre". Add location icon.
McDonald's, 1303 Charleston Highway: Summer 2017 (open again) 5 comments
As mentioned by commenter Andrew, here is another McDonald's undergoing upfit to the new style. This one is on the Charleston Highway adjacent to the recently closed Church's Chicken. The setup with two signs seems a little unusual to me, but perhaps I just haven't been paying attention.

UPDATE 7 February 2018 -- As mentioned in the comments, this store is open again:
Sonic Drive-In, 3316 North Main Street: 22 July 2017 1 comment
This is the second Sonic in Columbia that I am aware of closing. The Decker location closed in 2015. I like the idea of drive-ins with carhops, but in the event I never seem to end up wanting to eat in my car. I do get a milkshake every few years.

McDonald's, 2425 Sunset Boulevard: August 2017 (temporary) 20 comments
As commenter Jason notes, this McDonald's on Sunset Boulevard near the I-26 interchange has closed for remodeling. This is something a number of the local McDonald's have done recently, including ones on Garners Ferry, Hardscrabble, Two Notch and Decker.
I don't expect this
but you never know.

Edna's #1, 3609 River Drive: 31 March 2016 32 comments
Well, this is the end of an era. Edna's on River Drive predates me into this world by something over a year, so has been a Columbia institution longer than I've been alive. Of course, it has been an institution in a part of the town we used to think of as far away, so if we ever ate here growing up, it was long enough ago, and infrequently enough that I can't remember it. I'll have to try to remedy that before 31 March.
This kind of walk-up, no inside dining restaurant used to be common. In fact that's the way I recall Bell's and the original Garners Ferry McDonald's. Nowdays it is much less common, though you can still see remnants of the style, now worked around, in Zesto and Dairy Bar. I love the common-sense practicality of the cement blocks shorter customers can stand on to bring them up to window level.
Edna's also had an affiliated located at 2200 Two Notch Road, in a building that is still there, and a third location off Forest Drive, which was razed some years ago.
Here is a nice appreciation of Marie Rose Tyner, who ran the restaurant for many years and passed in the summer of 2015.
Hot Box, 10203 Two Notch Road: December 2015 5 comments
I have to admit I was not even aware this little Two Notch spot existed until I saw MizTerry's comment that it had closed. I have to admire the slogan, as whatever else you might want to say about it, it is undisputably true. As it happened, it was easier to get in and out of this lot than I expected as there were breaks in the traffic due to the lights up and down from this spot and because of the fairly wide suicide lane. I gues that doesn't matter now though, unless I want a tattoo..

Hardee's, 415 Columbia Avenue (Lexington): August 2015 (moved) 3 comments
As mentioned by a number of commenters over the last several months (and in this State article), the Hardee's location at 415 Columbia Avenue in Lexington in front of the Bi-Lo has moved to 1105 West Main Street and the former building has been razed.
The razed spot will be rebuilt as a Captain D's. The new Hardee's site is the former location of Clamp's BP Station.
UPDATE 11 December 2015 -- The construction of the Captain D's on this spot has started:
UPDATE 8 June 2016 -- Here is the new location for this Hardee's:
UPDATE 19 June 2021: Adding tags and map icon.
American Roadside Burgers, 702 Cross Hill Road Suite 400-D: Late June 2015 2 comments
As you know, I don't wish failure on anyone, and certainly the crew at this Cross Hill Market burger joint seemed nice enough and I'm sorry for their jobs, but to be frank, I couldn't figure out how they lasted as long as they did.
I ate here twice, probably about a year apart, the last time in April or May of this year. When I had decided to go, I picked the place because it was a very nice Spring day, and I knew they had patio seating. In the event, by the time I got there, the sky had clouded over, and the temperature had dropped too much for outside seating to be comfortable.
Taking myself inside, I remembered why I had not been back after my first time. The interior was sort of dark and cave-like, not cheery at all, and everything seemed kind of industrial and not homey. In addition, the burgers were quite pricey and I felt like I was paying Red Robin type table service prices for counter service. And while there was certainly nothing wrong with the burgers, I would not count them in the running for Columbia's best. Also, given the location, I wondered after both times why I hadn't just gone to Smash Burger across the street, something I'm guessing a lot of people did.

UPDATE 30 January 2016 -- As commenter MrBO notes, Midwood Smokehouse is now open in this spot:
Sonic Drive-In, 2461 Decker Boulevard: Early February 2015 1 comment
Well, I find this closing a bit surprising, especially given that a lot of Richland County offices will be going into Decker Mall just across the street.
For some reason I've always associated Sonic with small towns and bygone days, probably since the first one I was aware of was in Hartsville sometime back in the 1970s, but nowdays they seem to be a chain on the move with national television campaigns (rather silly ones, I must say) and expansion into head-to-head competition with McDonalds and the rest of the "sit down" fast food chains. I don't think I've had the burgers, but I stop for a milkshake once or twice a year, and they're pretty good.
The closing signs here are a bit disingenuous, as in fact the Forest Drive location:
has been open for over a year in the old Hardee's location.

Also adding map icon.
Wendy's, 10002 Two Notch Road: November 2014 10 comments
One of the very first closings I did was for Wendy's on Two Notch in Dentsville.
Now the other Two Notch Wendy's, out past Spring Valley by the Brickyard Shopping Center site has closed as well.
The place seems reasonably easy to get in and out of, there's even stoplight access, but I note that the adjacent former Quizno's has never been replaced by anything so perhaps I'm missing something about the spot.
I wonder if Nick's needs another location?
