Savalis Restaurant & Lounge, 1710 Main Street: September 2014 3 comments
This spot on Main has had trouble keeping a tenant the last few years. It was Mac's On Main for a long time, but the next incarnation CW's didn't last too long, and neither did Savalis, which I think was there about a year.
The signs indicate that a tenant is still needed, but apparently ceiling work has already started in advance of anyone moving in.

UPDATE 1 October 2014: Added the first picture of Savalis in operation.
Columbia's Greek Festival 2014, 1931 Sumter Street: 21 September 2014 1 comment
It wouldn't be September without the Greek Festival, and this weekend was one more chance to load up on baklava and Greek arts and crafts. The fest has really grown over the years, and this year saw bright sunshine and warm temps for a nice outing before the State Fair finally brings in the nippy weather next month.
Belk, Dutch Square: December 2014 27 comments
Well, this developed rather suddenly today. Commenter skysguy reported this early in the morning, and commenter Mr. Bo supplied this official link this evening: Belk's in Dutch Square is closing.
The chain is pitching it as doubling down on their Columbiana location, especially after getting extra space in the former Sears. However, they have had extra space in the Dutch Square store for *years*, and I believe if they had thought that store was viable, they could have re-opened the closed off spooky third floor (empty now except the hair salon and mens' room):
This closing pretty much puts the fork in the "mall" part of Dutch Square, and I would not be at all surprised to see the theater and Burlington closing their doors to the interior. (Office Depot already lacks interior access).

UPDATE 24 December 2014 -- All of the closing signage is up, and the store is half empty. If you want to buy some racks, step ladders, office chairs or nude mannequins, now's your chance. I'm not surprised fixtures aren't returnable, but I did find it a bit curious that regular merchandise is not returnable either, given we still have two local Belk's.
19 December 2014:
UPDATE 4 February 2015 -- The closure is complete:
UPDATE 10 September 2015 -- Interestingly, the building still isn't quite cleaned out:
UPDATE 7 November 2015 -- Here's a closing ad in The State:
UPDATE 10 April 2019 -- As mentioned in the comments, this is now a Planet Fitness:
Also adding map icon, updating tags and changing Belks to Belk in the post title.
National Pride Car Wash, 2416 Broad River Road: 2014 14 comments
I noticed this summer that the self-service car wash more or less across from the old Blockbuster is up for sale. I have not been by for a month or so, but at the time it appeared the place would stay in operation until sold.
I don't find much information about the place online, but back in 2003, the USC football team did a charity event there.
UPDATE 23 April 2019 -- Well, this place apparently did not sell for a long time, and stayed open for years after this post. Commenter Andrew reports it has now been torn down, which does not surprise me, as the last time I drove by it was cordoned off with tape barricades and something was apparently about to happen. I took some drive-by shots, which aren't great, but so it goes:
UPDATE 15 March 2022 -- The place has now been razed:
UPDATE 23 March 2023 -- Something is being built on the lot:
UPDATE 29 January 2024 -- Now Cars & Beyond:
(Also took the "for sale" note out of post title).
Good As New Consignments, 4884 Sunset Boulevard: July 2014 (consolidated) 4 comments
Commenter James notes that the larger part of this Sunset Boulevard building is now for lease.
It appears that this is the result of Good As New Consignments vacating the left suite of the building and consolidating with Good As New Furniture in the right suite.

UPDATE 15 May 2017 -- As reported in the comments, the main portion of this building is now a distillery:
Columbia King Buffet, 109 Woodland Hills Road: August 2014 28 comments
There seems to be some dispute whether this building is at 109 Woodland Hills Road or 788 Saint Andrews Road. The yellow pages listing and the '109' on their mailbox settles it for me as the first. There's also a bit of a discrepancy between the "closed for remodeling" signs at the front door, and the realty sign by the curb. I believe in this case the bigger sign wins, and this building is now on the market.
As you might guess just from the 'look', this rather large and rambling faux tudor building once housed one of Columbia's two Steak & Ale restaurants.

UPDATE 14 September 2015 -- As noted by commenter Andrew, this is now Tokyo Buffet:
Cletus' Roadside Grille, 11210 Broad River Road: July 2014 5 comments
Cletus' Roadside Grille was the latest restaurant to try to make a go of it in the old Whale's Tail spot. I'm not sure what their menu was, but the name puts me in the mind of down-home Southern cooking. I like the colorful, retro logo too.

UPDATE 28 August 2017 -- Now a La Fogata:
Kildare's Irish Pub, 724 Harden Street: Summer 2014 1 comment
Commenter badger suggested that Kildare's on Harden Street might be closed, and that does in fact seem to be the case. Looking through the windows, there is a bit of dishevelment inside, with plywood up in one window and checking the roofline shows under-panels missing along the front.
Nothing has seemed to stick in this spot since it was re-purposed from a series of Chinese restaurants to bar use.

UPDATE 2 December 2015 -- This much clubbed spot is open again as The Horseshoe and it appears this time the front and back are the same operation:
UPDATE 24 June 2019: Add tag and map icon.
McDonalds, 4301 Hard Scrabble Rd: Fall 2014 (open again) 24 comments
Commenter Sidney reported the McDonalds in The Crossings
at the corner of Hardcrabble and Clemson closed for renovations some time ago, but I only finally got out there after it re-opened.
Although I don't remember exactly what it looked like before, my impression is that this store has *not* been remodeled along the same lines as other recent McDonalds revampings (here, for example). In particular, the new style subtle arch cap-pieces and drive-through styling are not present, and the boxy glass playroom, which has been removed in other stores, still is.
UPDATE: Oops! Commenter Sidney says the remodeling hasn't happened yet. Looking at how fresh everything looks, I was sure it had, but now these can serve as "BEFORE" pictures.

UPDATE 7 August 2017 -- I still have yet to put the construction and "after" pictures up. I have them. Somewhere. Anyway, the place is open again.
Taco Cid, 1416 Charleston Highway: July 2014 (moved) 12 comments
Well, I was going to wait until I got over to the area again to get some pictures of the abandoned old location, and the new location in operation, but that didn't happen this weekend, and there's been a lot of Taco Cid talk here lately, so I'll go ahead with what I've got.
Longtime local Mexican fast-food restaurant Taco Cid has moved from their Cayce location near Piggy Park and out to Airport Tec Plaza at 3313 Platt Springs Road.
They have moved into the old Marino's Bistro location and are now open, though they have not yet replaced the Marino's marquee.

UPDATE 21 August 2014 -- Here is the Charleston Highway location after closure:
UPDATE 10 March 2017 -- As mentioned by commenter Andrew, this building is going to pot:
UPDATE 30 August 2022: Well, color me surprised. I thought the Charleston Highway Taco Cid building was beyond salvage, but somebody has managed it, and it is now open as Perry's Gourmet Flaming Grilled Chicken!
(Also updating tags and adding map icon).
