Harper's, 700 Harden Street: 19 April 2017 19 comments
Well, this is a surprise. I had not eaten at Harper's more than four or five times over the years, but it was always perfectly fine. In fact, the last time I went, probably just a year or two ago after an absence of a dozen years or more, it seemed a good deal more upscale than I recalled. The dedicated parking lot was also a nice touch, as parking in Five Points can be a hassle.
Judging from the WLTX story flagged by commenter ED, the chain itself is OK, and continues in Charlotte & Greensboro, so there was apparently some issue specific to Columbia here.
It will be interesting to see what happens to this site.

Oh no, where will I get my overpriced subpar food now?
A: California DreamingIn all seriousness, an entire block on Five Points has been recently bought out and I know El Burrito is closing as well in the next week here. The owner wasn't originally going to sell until she saw the buyout number.
Ignore that previous comment lol.

I had only eaten here once back in 2001 or 2002 and my wife got food poisoning, never went back after that. Still, it's a shame to see a restaurant with such a long run closing down.

This story has the better details: http://www.free-times.com/restaurants/nibbles-and-sips/harper-s-abruptly-closes/article_eff9f308-2507-11e7-bb16-8fa95ca94182.html
The landlord seemed to not be making proper or timely repairs. Plus the same restaurant group just opened 1801 Grille on Lincoln Street, so they still have a presence in town, just a trendier one.

Loved sitting on the patio for hours at a time. Also, I frequently did take out, picking up the Oriental chicken salad, don't know what I'll do without it.

Good Riddance!!! The Pour House where the bar owner is getting sued for chocking out a college kid and throwing him passed out onto his face in the street. It was what is known as a nuisance spot to police for some time prior to that. Always getting calls about trouble going on there.

From a lot of the comments I've heard from various sources, I'm glad I only drank at Harper's.....
There's only two places I will still go in Five Points, Yesterday's and Group Therapy, but only during happy hour, when the clientele is more my age.

@Mr. Bill I seem to recall it was a D'Lite's, or Grandy's maybe fast food restaurant immediately before Harper's in the mid '80s. It was a car stereo place back in the day though.

I ate here once, the night I graduated from USC. Although the food was decent, it wasn't memorable. Will be interesting to see what occupies this lot next.

I can't remember ever actually eating at Harper's but I have spent many a St. Patrick's Day sitting on the patio drinking beer and people watching.
