Toys 'Я' Us, 140 Columbiana Drive: Spring 2018 13 comments
So fare there are no signs advertising big closings savings at the Toys 'R' US Columbiana Mall outparcel site in Harbison, but it's just a matter of time as the firm officially threw in the towel last week and says it will not emerge from bankruptcy.
I missed the golden age of Toys 'R' Us, and in fact don't think I've ever been into a store. For us, the big thing was the Sears Christmas Wishbook with wonders on every page, here's an appreciation from someone who was not too old for the golden age, along with some reminders that Toys 'R' Us has been in and out of trouble for a long time.
The funny thing is that while TRU doesn't sell as many toys as it used to, it still sells a *lot* of toys, and you have to wonder how bad the debts must be if you have bankruptcy protection and can't come up with a viable plan for the way forward while you are still selling lots of toys.
A few links:
According to CNN, the timing of closing sales and the final closing have yet to be determined.
A trademark collector may be bringing KB Toys back as popup stores due to the TRU bankruptcy.
Amazon may buy some of the stores though I wouldn't hold my breath for the Columbia area.
I have to say this store does not look appealing to me. It looks a bit run down, boxy and not 'fun'. I realize there are limits to what you can do with stodgy Columbia codes, but to me something like *this* says TOY STORE!
And finally, thanks, guys, for that whole backwards 'Я' thing. Not.
Wells Fargo, 165 Columbiana Drive: February 2018 9 comments
Here's another Wells Fargo branch "pruning", this one on Columbiana Drive at Afton Court. (And next to the former Monterrey Mexican).
You may also bank at any Wells Fargo location that is convenient for you.
Well, that's big of them.

Nestle Toll House Cafe, Columbiana Centre: Summer 2017 no comments
I noticed on my last trip to Columbiana to get a picture of the American Deli setup that across the food court, Nestle Toll House cafe was closed.
I don't think they are doing a revamp as the one at Sandhill did as they are no longer listed on the mall web site. It's been a while since I've stopped at at Toll House, but my experience has always been that the cookies are quite good.
Apocalypse Comics 2, 285 Columbiana Drive: September 2017 3 comments
I believe I went into the Grand Strand location of Apocalypse Comics, which closed last year, a couple of times, but I never made it into this Harbison location. To be truthful, I get most of my comics nowdays from a subscription service which has pretty much curtailed my shop visits.
Here's a nice little write up about the shop in The Daily Gamecock.

Burger King, Columbiana Centre: Summer 2017 12 comments
As mentioned several times in Have Your Say, the Burger King at Columbiana Mall is closed "temporarily". There's not any explanation on the sign making that claim, and apparently it has been several months. Ordinarily after such a length of time, I might write off the sign as wishful thinking, but in this case the equipment clearly has not been stripped, so who knows.
Almost as soon as I got inside to take this picture, somebody pulled the fire alarm, and everybody headed for the exits.

UPDATE 9 October 2017 -- As mentioned in the comments this spot is setting up to be an American Deli so I'm taking the "temporary" off the post title:
UPDATE 6 February 2019: Change the location from "Columbiana Mall" to "Columbiana Centre". Add location icon.
Carmike 14, 122 Afton Court: Summer 2017 (reflagged) 11 comments
As mentioned in the Have Your Say already, the Carmike 14 on Afton Court off of Columbiana Drive across from Columbiana Mall has been reflagged to AMC Classic Harbison 14. As of 27 August 2017, the Carmike branding was still on the roadside sign and the building marquee, but inside the theater is already in operation as an AMC with their policy trailer and concessions.
This theater has always been a bit of an enigma to me as it is far enough away, that I rarely get to it, but in the past my impression is that it has tended to shadow Dutch Square more closely than the Regal on Bower Parkway.
The Tilted Kilt, 380 Columbiana Drive: Early June 2017 8 comments
Well, often in these situations, the "closed for remodeling" rubric is more a vague hope than a description of something that will actually happen. However, Wet Willie's finally did come back, so who knows? The external indications are mixed: this location is gone from the company website, but the signage has not been taken down.
At any rate The Tilted Kilt replaced Huller's German restaurant in this location, opening in early 2014. The chain is a "breastaurant" concept like Hooters but with a faux Scottish flair. I only went to this location once, when I was looking for something open late that wasn't just burgers. They had some sort of mashed potato pie thing on the menu that looked like it would be a) Pretty good & b) Hard to mess up. Either one or the other of those assumptions turned out to be wrong, though the scenery was nice.

UPDATE 20 June 2017: Removed the "(temporary?)" notation from the post title based on the comments and this State article
UPDATE 17 August 2021 -- As mentioned in the comments, this place is setting up to be Willie Sue's:

Williams Sonoma, Columbiana Centre: 16 January 2017 1 comment
I think there was, or is, a Williams Sonoma on King Street in Charleston, and every now and then when I was in town and walking the shops district, I would drop in to see all the neat stuff that would never fit into my non-cooking lifestyle. I think I may have browsed this store too once, though my visits to Columbiana Mall are passing rare.
According to The State this was not a surprise closing, at least to mall management. They also mention that the Market Commons store in Myrtle Beach was closing as well. I'm unsure if that says more about Williams Sonoma or Market Commons which has struggled in recent years. Normally if a company is in trouble there will be some press about it, but all I see is a Motley Fool article citing a stock price fall.
According to the linked State article about the storefront
there’s a plan in place for what we hope to be a huge surprise in 2018
On the one hand, that sounds upbeat, on the other hand, 1 year+ is a long time for a slot to stay empty.
The Limited, Columbiana Mall: January 2017 no comments
It was the 70s I guess when I first heard of The Limited, as they had a very catchy radio commercial whose refrain was
Look to The Limited!
That aside, I thought the name a little odd. I guess they were going for an "upscale" Limited as in "Limited Edition", but to me the name always brought up associations like "No, we don't have that, we're limited". Not that it really impinged on me either way as it was all women's clothes and I don't believe I ever set foot in any location.
This shop, at Columbiana closed in early January as part of the chain's axing of all its stores. Forbes has the story:
And another bites the dust.
Women's apparel chain The Limited on Sunday [8 January 2017] began closing all 250 of its stores across the United States and is slashing 4,000 jobs, the latest casualty of shopping's move online and the growth of fast fashion chains.
Interestingly, the article does not specifically say the chain is actually in bankruptcy of any chapter..
Huller's Black Forest, 380 Columbiana Drive: 2011 (moved) 2 comments
I have already done a closing for Huller's Black Forest in their final home on Saint Andrews Road. Before they moved there however, they occupied this Columbiana Drive building, up a flight of stairs from the Nathan's / Bruster's parking lot.
I thought I might as well do this one now, as the building has just reopened as The Tilted Kilt, a breastaurant a bit more upscale than Hooters and thankfully featuring no actual Scottish cuisine, most of which seems to have been created as a dare of some sort.
UPDATE 19 September 2022: Adding map icon.
