Bennett Construction & Bennett Electric, 3100 Main Street: 2011   2 comments

Posted at 12:13 am in Uncategorized

Noticed this vacancy on North Main near the trestle the other day, presumably another casualty of the housing crash. The building didn't strike me as anything special from the outside, but I have to say the interior description sounds surprisingly opulent:

Versatile use with upscale office spaces, exercise room, conference room, receptionist station, storage rooms, break room and two full baths with separate showers. Granite counters, travertine floors and so much more!

Esso / Exxon, 7450 Two Notch Road: 1970s   1 comment

Posted at 11:04 pm in closing

This old-school Exxon on Two Notch near the I-20 interchange, and O'Neil Court is currentl Go Used Tires, but apparently that will only last until the sale of the building, which is currently on offer.

This is a classic look for an Esso/Exxon of that era. Here is a similiar one (which I believe stayed open longer) in Yulee Florida:

Hopefully the Two Notch building will not be razed, but given the age, I wouldn't bet on it.

UPDATE 5 December 2011: Added Esso to the post title based on the comments.

UPDATE 10 October 2016 -- The Two Notch building continues to deteriorate. I don't see how the next operation won't raze it. I also note the sheltered area looks to have been something of a homeless campout:

Title Doc, 2819 Broad River Road: 2009   no comments

Posted at 10:09 pm in Uncategorized

This little house on the west side of Broad River Road near the old George's Book Exchange really deserved better.

I can imagine that back in the day, before the road was widened, it would have been a nice place to settle down and start a family.

The construction permits are dated November 2009, and list First Community Bank as the owner, so Title Doc must have been gone by then. Curiously, the house next door, which I'll do at some point, was also a title-loan type place.

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts / Greater Columbia Funeral Services, 2548 Main Street: 2000s   17 comments

I noticed this vacant funeral home driving down Main Street near River Drive the other day. I could weed the pictures down further, but I like the clouds in the long shots too much to lose them.

You can still see the label-scar for the business name on the front of the building, and on the turned-inside-out roadside sign if you look closely enough. I had no doubts what the building was even before seeing them however as the design is pretty unequivocal. That's not to say it's generic -- I really like the sharp points and slopes of the roof-line. The online property data says it was built in 1960, which I have no problem believing, and LoopNet says it sits on a 1 acre lot, which I would not have guessed.

UPDATE 13 March 2025: Updating tags and adding map icon.

Cherokee Trail Veterinary Hospital, 5449 Sunset Boulevard: 2010 (moved)   8 comments

This interesting looking "modern" building on Sunset Boulevard across from the Lexington Place shopping center caught my eye in the late afternoon sunlight a few weekends ago.

You can see the fenced in pet-run area on the far side of the building, but the vets have moved to 109 Palmetto Park Boulevard. Perhaps they were zoned out of this office. I note that the LoopNet listing for the place says:

Free standing building on 1 acre. Would make excellent Doctor's office, Dentist office, Salon, Spa or similar uses. Prohibited uses include veterinary related types.

I know dogs can be noisy, but it couldn't be any worse than the traffic on Sunset Boulevard!

UPDATE 25 May 2016 -- Now a strip mall anchored by Smashburger:

WalMart / NetBank, 9710 Two Notch Road: 27 September 2007   5 comments

Posted at 11:23 pm in Uncategorized

I have done a couple of other posts on this mostly dead strip mall on Two Notch at Polo called Park Centre. In particular, here is Piggly Wiggly / Harris Teeter (and Bruno's), and here is Pic 'N Pay.

Neither of those was the strip's main tenant however. That was initially Walmart and then after that, NetBank.

Of course everyone is familiar with Walmart and their gradual move to bigger "Supercenter" locations. That, I believe is what happened to this location: It was replaced by the Supercenter at 10060 Two Notch Road.

I was not as familiar with NetBank which moved in after Walmart moved, probably in the late 1990s or early 2000s.

To summarize the NetBank Wikipedia page, NetBank was an Atlanta/Alpharetta based operation which started as Atlanta Internet Bank and Net.B@nk before settling on the NetBank name. It was a very early venture into Internet banking and mainly made its money from mortgages.

It did quite well for a while, but eventually overextended itself and got into trouble as its core mortgage business started to fail (though this was a little before the main 2008 mortgage crisis). After flailing for a while, it decided to sell itself off to another bank, but found it didn't even have enough to bring to the table to pull that off and ended up being taken over by the Office of Thrift Supervision on 27 September 2007, becoming the biggest thrift failure since the S&L crisis of the 80s.

This site was a big enough part of its assets that it was mentioned in the Bloomberg article on its failure as part of the asset base to be sold off. After the takeover, the FDIC insured accounts were acquired by ING Direct.

According to commenter Soxinsc, Blue Cross/Blue Shield leased the NetBank space for a while, and there does still seem to be some sort of front desk with signs of use in there though I find it odd that the NetBank logo was never taken down if someone else did have the building..

S. L. Munson & Company, 401 Huger Street: late 2000s (moved)   no comments

Posted at 11:38 pm in Uncategorized

Here's one I've had on my hard drive for a while. This little building is on the west side of Huger Street, just north of the railroad tracks, and just across the street from The Dog Shack.

LoopNet says the property is still available. Interestingly, Google turns it up as an address for Bath Fiter Of Columbia, but I haven't put that in the post title because the building pictured there is clearly not 401 Huger..

S. L. Munson is apprently a metalworking tool company. I have to admit I never even heard of the road they moved to, Old Dairy Drive, but apparently it parallels Bluff Road.

PC Nails, 1569 Broad River Road #B: 2011   1 comment

This nail salon was in Boozer Shopping Center right next to the new location for Hook 'n Needle.

I'm not sure what "PC" stood for in this context as presumably their work was Mac compatible as well..

Reliant Hospice, 2858 Sunset Boulevard: 2011   3 comments

Posted at 10:48 pm in Uncategorized

This nice little building on Sunset Boulevard in West Columbia, just behind Hawthorne Pharmacy and more or less across the street from Atlanta Bread was an end-of-life-care hospice. From what I can find out, they used to be on Center Point Circle, moving to this location in 2010 (based on the copyright of their now gone but archived site), and closing their doors sometime in 2011.

J. Rubin & Son Co., 1742 Blanding Street: early 1990s   2 comments

Posted at 3:22 am in Uncategorized

I was meaning to get back to this building when the sun was not against me, but as yet have not. Anyway, I noticed it driving back from downtown towards Harden one day a few months ago and the name sounded vaguely familiar.

Doing a google search turned up this this fascinating article on Columbia's Jewish history, in which J. Rubin & Son played a part along with many other familiar names.

The building is apparently still owned by the Rubin family, or a real estate company associated with them anyway. I'm not sure what happened to the building to make it "Unsafe". Looking through the door, it does not appear that there has been a fire or any major damage (though it is a bit of a look into history -- the vintage fan looks especially nice!).

As far as I can tell, the neighboring unit, 1740 Blanding Street was last South Carolina Electronic Equipment & Supplies.
