I'm pretty sure that this Pizza Hut was the same operation which used to be in a little plaza further towards Dentsville more or less across from Columbia Mall. That whole set of buildings was razed and I can't quite recall what was built there afterwards.

Anyway, that was a classic-era Pizza Hut and I had enjoyable meals there many times. I never ate in the new location, and pretty much gave up on Pizza Hut years ago. The owners of the chain just destroyed everything that made it enjoyable and ran it into the ground. I think that owners who knew what they were doing could bring back the red cups, the distinctive buildings, the salad bar, the table cloths, in-house cooking and make a good return on retro stores.

Oh well, that rant aside, I can say that this location closed on the 16th, and has yet to be cleared out. You can read about it in The State and the Post & Courier.

Agree wholeheartedly! I would break keto for a few old-fashioned slices of deep dish pan pizza from the '80s.

  3. I recall this being here many years ago. I thought it was just a delivery take out operation. Perhaps after the old Pizza Hut closed they added seating.

  4. Alright...I know I'm going to open a can of worms here, but sometimes ya just gotta hang it out there.

I try to patronize local "mom and pop" joints. They are my first choice if available because I've had good results. Real Italians make the best pizzas in my experience.

Having grown up in the 80s, I loved Pizza Hut. *Modern* Pizza Hut is not as good as it was in the 80s. I accept that as fact and agree. But having a strong nostalgic streak, I recently tried them again after not eating it for years. It wasn't bad. It wasn't *as* good as it was, but it was not bad.

As delivery pizza goes, Pizza Hut is probably the best of the "big" options in my opinion. I don't like Papa Johns and I have yet to have a decent delivery experience with Domino's. I think they just hate me because every time, their pizzas show up mangled, not baked properly or both.

So, yeah, I'm weird. Modern Pizza Hut isn't 80s good, but if your store is decent, it's not bad either. Prices have gone nuts, but that's a 'nother discussion.

Oh yeah. Absolutely bring back 80's Pizza Hut with the red plastic cups, tablecloths, Galaga and a quarter-operated jukebox. You'll get all my business.

  5. I will also "open a can of worms":

The local small businesses don't automatically deserve to be chosen instead of the larger chains (I understand that Lone Wolf was not saying this). Some of them offer great food or products at a reasonable price, along with great customer services. Others don't. I've dealt with awful service and/or bad products and food at small businesses.

I want to add, I go to a local restaurant and a coffee shop where, at both places, I don't think the food and coffee are anything special. I appreciate the reasonable prices, consistent good-enough quality, and friendly staff who seem to be grateful for my business.

Nothing wrong with choosing Pizza Hut if you prefer it. I agree that it doesn't compare to some of the good family business. I say that Domino's is like buying a lottery ticket - be prepared to waste money. It might be terrible, acceptable, or you might get a surprisingly decent pizza.

  6. The old Dentsville Pizza Hut was at 7030 Two Notch, current location now Advance Auto Parts.

And, yeah, I miss the old PH, too. Used to frequent the South Main location every week back in the 80s.

  7. I have found Marco's to be decent for delivery the few times I have been snowed-in or had my car in the shop.

  8. I worked at the Devine Street and Forest Drive Pizza Huts while in High School in the 70s and those were both jam packed restaurants. They hired nice looking waitresses and not limp wristed, multicolored hair guys with rings in their nose that announced "I will be your server". As they used to say, gag me with a spoon.

Each individual location made their own dough for the crust then and the sauce was ladled on and smoothed out and toppings were piled on before going into the large ovens. The pepperoni slices today are so thin they curl up and burn on the edges.

The coolers were stocked with bottles of Boones Farm wine and the Rockola played the current hits nonstop. The tables all had the checkered tablecloths with candles and it was a fun place to meet up with friends and family. The last time I visited a Pizza Hut there were only about 4 tables and the atmosphere was dead like a Doc in a Box.

I want to believe Aphid is right in an earlier post that reverting back to a go-to location with good eats would be a nice change, but the best days are behind and the younger crowd would be staring at their phones instead of talking and laughing, waiting on their server. I don't mean to paint a dark picture, but there you have it. Comments?

  9. One big problem is the current number of kids/younger adults who have watched adult family members use smartphones/tablets too much.

I have family members who are over age 55, and they are often checking group chats, taking photos for social media, etc. Children are growing up with devices pointed at them. My one-year-old nephew has a toy fake smartphone already.

I was recently at a buffet-style Chinese restaurant. A boy who looked to be 10, 11 years old had taken his children's tablet to the buffet so he could keep using it while putting food on his plate. Food spilled off the plate as he walked away, back to a table near mine, and none of his older family members seemed to care.

  10. The Forest Drive Pizza Hut, man I had totally forgotten about it. I think it burned down, and for whatever reason they didn't rebuild.

  11. Yes, it burned down a *long* time ago.

  12. I'd love a story about that one. I was really young when that happened. The Devine Street one referenced, was that the one on campus, across from The Towers?

  13. The Devine Street Pizza Hut was about where Another Broken Egg is now. There was also a Putt-Putt course in the same area which all predates the current Food-Lion plaza.

The Main Street Pizza Hut was in fact across from The Towers before all that Main & Blossom corner was rebuilt. They kept the thermostat set at about 45 to keep the college kids from hanging around and shooting the breeze.

  14. I remember the Putt Putt, but don't remember the Pizza Hut. I though perhaps it was the corner of South Main and Devine. I remember before it was all redeveloped.

  16. Didn't realize there was a Pizza Hut at 2903 North Main. That's an empty field now, would be interesting to see some pictures of it when it was in operation.

  17. The North Main location had a large basement and local bands played there on Friday and Saturday nights.

  18. There are still several full size, full service Pizza Huts around, although they are few and far between.
I too miss the “golden age” of Pizza Hut. Growing up in Forest Acres, Pizza Hut was one the very few delivery options, so I ate many a pie from there, whether at the restaurants or by delivery.

  19. Well, the interweb tells me there are over 100 classic (restored) Pizza Huts in operation.
Closest one looks to be in Wadesboro, NC.
    Road trip!
