Smart Choice Title Loans, 7716 Two Notch Road: February 2017 6 comments
Commenter Bart Laber reports that this whole company is gone as of February, and indeed their website is now just a "parked" page, though the old page can still be found on the Wayback Machine. Judging from that, it appears to have been an SC company as the initials would imply.
The address given on the door sign is the old Shoney's etc building in Dentsville.

Rooster's Racks, 1051 Sunset Boulevard: 2014 4 comments
I noticed this vacant pool hall on Sunset near New Brookland Baptist a week or so ago. They list in this years phonebook, and I think it would have caught my eye if it had been closed earlier, so I'm going with "Early 2017" for the closing date.
That's one buff & veiny looking chicken...
UPDATE 12 April 2017: I had the closing as "Early 2017" since they are in the Feb 2017 phonebook, but based on the comments, I've put the date back to 2014, which is quite a difference!
$2.49 / $2.79 Dry Cleaners, 904 Knox Abbot Drive: 2016 (moved) 3 comments
I first knew this storefront as Silver City Comics back when I was in college in the 80s. I know they were there as late as 1997, so I'm not sure when $2.49 moved in, but it's been a good number of years. I noticed the other week that they are gone and the place is now a Latin (but apparently not Mexican) restaurant.
UPDATE 6 April 2017 -- Hmm apparently I did this post and it was one of the ones that vanished in the database crash. I see it in the wayback machine, and will try to bring in those pictures later. I also see there that they moved from "$2.49" to "$2.79" before moving, so I'm updaing the post title with the higher price and "moved".
Treasures / His House / Quick Cash, 1327 Broad River Road: 2010s 6 comments
Noticed this defunct, rocket logo themed, title loan operation on Broad River Road the other week. I can't find out anything about it in my recent phonebooks, but google suggests it was Quick Cash. Before that it was apparently two different thrift stores, Treasures and a His House location.
HiLights / So You Want To Dance / Columbia Beauty School, 1824 Airport Boulevard: 2016-ish 3 comments
These are not great pictures of this office building at the corner of Airport Boulevard & Dale Lane as the sun was against me. Google suggests that the place has housed a variety of businesses, probably several at the same time. You can see the sign for HiLights here, which I take to be a hair salon, though I can't quite read the rest of the sign. Perhaps it was associated with the beauth school.
It is hard to see, but it appears that the ground floor of the building has stained glass windows in front, though I see no indication that it was ever a church.
Myxx Nightlife, 14 Berryhill Road: Early 2017 13 comments
Well, this place never seems to stick. I noticed driving I-26 the other week that it seemed to be dark during a time you would expect a nightclub to be in full operation. A stop by a few days later confirmed it. You'll notice the phonebook by the door, which is a prime indicator, and one I have seen many times over the years. That dates the closure to prior to February 2017, but not any more precisely.
I will say one problem this place has never had is parking -- the lot comprises huge tracts of land.
UPDATE 31 August 2022: This place appears to be undergoing gradual demolition. Perhaps they are trying to get the asbestos out first or something, but it has been gutted.
Also adding map icon.
Update 29 March 2023 -- Well, the place is razed:
Vertaco, 1832 Airport Boulevard: 2016 3 comments
This is the former site of Vegas Sports Bar & Grill and numerous other nightclubs over the years. Looking at the pictures for that closing, it appears that the only change was to put of a new name on the sign.
I have to admit it's a clever name though.
Null's Exxon, 5200 Two Notch Road: 9 December 2016 12 comments
Well, this is one of the last old-time "service stations" around town. Looking inside is like visiting another age. The "Maps Here" sign is particularly evocative -- there was a time you got your branded highway maps at a service station. I still have a cubby full of old "Gulf" maps, some predating the completion of the 'I' system. That was also a time when we were convinced that gas was *not* a commodity product, and that "Good Gulf" was better than "putting a tiger in your tank" or vice versa.
And a man would actually come out to your car, pump the gas, check your oil, check your tires, check your battery and radiator and wash your windows.
Their sign says they were here for 33 years, which is a good run.
And for context, you can see two former closing in the background: here and here.
UPDATE 16 March 2017 -- Rather Hopperesque:
UDATE 1 September 21018 -- Something is happening here:
UPDATE 21 February 2019 -- Now a Cheap Way convenience store:

Absolute Title Loans, 1410 Sunset Boulevard: 2012 14 comments
I was wondering what business this nice little old house next Triangle Lock & Safe on Sunset was. Looking at the pictures I took, I couldn't even get a street number (for some reason I didn't get out for a closer look at the time), but google maps came through and identified it as 1410 Sunset and the former site of yet another of the Midlands title loans operations. They listed in the Feb 2012 phonebook, but not the Feb 2013 one, so I am tagging the closing date as 2012.
