R & R Thrift Store, 6729 Two Notch Road: December 2020 1 comment
I noticed last time I drove by Very's to see if they were doing dine-in yet that the thrift store in the same Two Notch plaza was gone. Judging by their Facebook, they were open into at least December of last year. I used to stop into places like this all the time to look for old books and records, but both are digital for me these days, so I never did stop here. The full name seems to have been Refreshed & Restored (R&R) Ministries Thrift Store, so I guess they were associated with a church.
Nadeau Furniture With A Soul, 702 Cross Hill Road: 21 April 2021 (Moving) no comments
Commenter Larry points out that this furniture store in Cross Hill Market is "moving" to Greenville, though it sounds mostly like they are shipping the inventory to an already existing store there. According to their Facebook, tomorrow (21 April) will be their last day.
I think of Cross Hill Market as still a fairly new place, but there has already been a good bit of turnover there.

Pep Boys, 2455 Decker Boulevard: May 2021 (Direction Change) no comments
Commenter Thomas notes that this location of Pep Boys is transitioning away from auto parts, and into a garage only busines model and is running a closeout sale during the interim.
This turns out to be a chain-wide thing, as the stores have been struggling of late after having been bought out by Carl Ichan five years ago.
According to the linked story, some stores are trying to work a deal for a different parts operation to take over the retail space, but I don't know if that applies to this location. There are already a number of parts stores in the Dentsville area, so I'm not sure how attractive such a deal would be to another chain.
I guess I am the demographic the change is aimed at, as I have never bought parts there, but have had minor work done a number of times. In particular, I found that when I could not get same-day service at places like Goodyear or Firestone for things like punctures, batteries or headlights, this Pep Boys could get me in and out in an hour or so.

Latino Express, 505 Meeting Street: 2020 (Moved) no comments
I've made some pretty bad mistakes about Spanish language businesses here before, but I *think* Latino Express offers a variety of services including insurance, tax preparation and vehicle registration assistance.
It appears that they have relocated from this strip mall on Meeting Street, to 1735 Augusta Rd.
It appears that Always Original Bakery is setting up to occupy this spot.
The Clock Doctor, 7304 Two Notch Road: Early 2021 1 comment
I know The Clock Doctor has had several locations as I can remember hearing about it growing up. I figured that eventually I would take the big hall clock that I "fixed" as a teenager and actually get it working again, but in the event I never did, and am not at all sure anymore that I would want that making noise all night anyway.
The only previous location that I know of was on Covenant Road in a building that was recently demolished.
The pictured location is one of the odder strip malls on Two Notch: It is all trailers and sheds. My guess has always been that zoning doesn't allow any permanent buildings right up against a railroad track like that, but in the event these have been here so long they might as well be permanent. It appears to me that a new business is already setting up in the Clock Doctor trailer.

Ed Robinson Laundry & Dry Cleaning, 2551 Forest Drive: October 2020 1 comment
I noticed some new signage on Ed Robinson Laundry & Dry Cleaning (in the Ed Robinson building, as it turns out) on Forest Drive, and although the new name is not visible from the street, a drive through the parking lot confirmed that this location is now a Michael's Cleaners.
I have always liked the spire in front of this building, and it looks especially good at night with the blue illumination. I took a few twilight pictures on another day that I will add to the post eventually.
Grapes & Gallery, 1113 Taylor Street: 23 November 2019 2 comments
I had not heard of this Taylor Street wine bar and gallery / artist work space until commenter Justin mentioned that it was gone.
As it turns out, it closed in late 2019, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, which had been my first assumption for the reason. The Free Times had the story here.

The Cliff Apartments, 1321 Whaley Street: Early March 2021 9 comments
I was only vaguely aware of The Cliff Apartments when I was at USC, though apparently they had been open for several years at that point. They, along with the Bates-es were just on a side of campus I never had any reason to go to. Now USC has razed the building as part of a plan for a new "Campus Village".
The State has the story here and here. Apparently students were forced out of these dorms in the middle of the year to save construction costs by not holding off on the work. In the event, they seem to be several months behind schedule tearing this place down, and I expect the pandemic played into it. Bates & Bates West are also on the block for the next phase of the project.
I don't know. To me it seems like the campus area has been vastly overbuilt in the last several years. I just don't see enrolement continuing to grow as it has, especially with the total game-changer of remote classes during this last year. We'll see.

McDonald's Hamburgers / University Motor Company, 633 South Assembly Street: 2018 (Merged) 3 comments
I noticed the other day that this old McDonald's at the corner of Assembly & Rosewood across from the Fairgrounds is vacant. The last tenant was University Motor Company, which apparently moved in sometime around 2010, and in 2018 merged with Bluff Road Auto Sales with the combined operation at 1400 Bluff Road.
UPDATE 3 February 2023 -- Now Lyon's General Store:
The Flower Botique, 7832 Two Notch Road: 2017-ish (Moved) no comments
When I took these pictures, I was thinking this spot was PC Corner, but it turned out I had already done a closing on that, and anyway, it was two suites over. This looks to have been The Flower Botique, which has apparently moved to 8816 Two Notch. It turns out I did have a picture of that from a different closing, it's just not a very good one:
