Columbia Closings   What's not in Columbia anymore

At one time Tandy Leather was under the same coporate umbrella as the now defunct Radio Shack, but that's all water under the bridge now. Apparently the current regime dates from 1999, and I don't see any news about them being in trouble, but nonetheless this store has closed, and apparently the next nearest is 100 miles away.

Tuesday Morning had a bad time during the Covid crisis and entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May of 2020. After coming out, they continued to do poorly and refiled on 14 February 2023. As of today (2 March 2023), their bid to get refinancing from Invictus has failed and they are in talks with Gordon Brothers Group, and I take it from the linked article, are still planning to come out of Chapter 11, although Gordon Brothers have "liquidators" in the description given of them.

At any rate, they are closing around half of all their stores, and this one is part of that group. The closing sale has started, so get there soon.

This pet supply business in Landmark Square appears to have shut down late last year, and a new, also pet oriented, follow-on operation, The Pet Shop is about to open there, if it has not already.

This building featured here a while ago as a Hot Spot, which was closed for a while, re-opened, and then converted to an O M Mart.

Now it appears that the O M Mart reflagged as a Sunoco at some point, and is now closed again, though apparently on a temporary basis.

UPDATE 6 March 2023 -- Not a good picture, but open again:

The Gap location in Columbiana Centre closed this week, leaving the brand with no locations in the Midlands.

Here is The State on the story, and The Post & Courier weighs in here. In particular, the P&C story mentions the mall shooting, about which I had already forgotten, which took place in the corridor outside the store -- I don't know if that were a factor in the closing as the chain has plenty of problems overall, but it can't have helped.

The company has been in trouble for a while, and according to The State announced last September that they would be closing 150 of its 700 stores. This Sparkleberry Square location is one of those, but apparently the Harbison and Garners Ferry locations will stay open, at least for now.

This closing is rather interesting as there doesn't seem to have been any media coverage of it, and Google still thinks the place is open. Looking at Wikipedia and googling for news in general does not suggest the chain is in trouble, so I'm not sure what was going on here.

Ivy & Leo in Trenholm Plaza is moving leftwards a few suites into the slot formerly occupied by Simply Mac. This lateral move will let Publix expand their store into the vacated adjacent space. This has long needed doing, as that Publix was crammed into a former A&P slot, and is much smaller than their typical store. I like Publix in general, but have always felt cramped when I shop this one.

Update 20 July 2023 -- This storefront is now gone:

Carolina Mattress was the follow-on operation in this Forest Drive storefront to Nutrition Warehouse. I'm not exactly sure when it closed, but the Google reviews suggest sometime around the start of 2022.

It seems it's kind of a tough time to be a mattress store.

UPDATE 10 November 2022 -- A question from commenter Russell below reminded me that there commenter Dennis worked of a map of the original open-air mall, and I got the tenant lists for 1926, 1975 & 1985 here.
