Mucho Margaritas / San Jose Mexican Restaurant, 819 Harden Street: Early October 2013 13 comments
To the best of my recollection, I've never eaten at any establishment in this Five Points storefront, to include San Jose, though I have certainly eaten at other local San Jose locations, and found them to be perfectly OK.
Commenter MB noted the closing, and pointed out that until fairly recently it was Mucho Margaritas, something I must have driven by many times without it registering at all. Already today the sign was down and folks were carting off the fixtures. With the recent closure of Dreams Of Bombay, there are now two adjacent restaurant vacancies in this building. (I don't know what, if anything, is in the upper storey).
(Hat tip to commenter MB)
UPDATE 1 July 2014 -- This will next be the bacon themed restaurant Sizzle. Mmm, Bacon!:

The 2nd story are apartments. This is where Strom Thurmond's daughter lived when she was killed by a drunk driver while crossing Harden Street while going to (I believe) the Eckerd's Drug store.

Mike, to this day I believe that woman was hung out to dry by the politically connected, and the drunkenness roles were reversed. As I recall, Miss Thurmond ran out between two parked cars and the woman couldn't avoid her. I don't even think the driver was near the legal limit.
I could be misremembering, but that's the way I recall it going down.
Homer, I hear Fox and Mulder want to speak with ted....

That is one of the better UFO pictures I've seen. That's publication worthy.

@tonka - I have always believed that the driver was a pawn in some political agenda. I, as well, can't remember if she was over the limit or not, but I'll guarantee that Thurmond's kid was. She was know for her partying in 5 Points. I'm surprised there has not been a lot more accidents like that down there. This kids will cross the street anywhere and at any time they want to regardless of the traffic around. I'll bet she was going to Eckerd's, probably more like The Elbow room or Group Therapy.

Right. It was also the Bad-A## Coffee Company. The bagel shop was New York Bagel. (Although I don't recall the travel agency specifically being PAL.)

I miss Mucho Margaritas a lot it was a good place for cheap Mexican. I enjoy San Jose but never ate there.
I had heard it closed due to high rent.
For the record the politics that got involved in with the Thurmond tragedy couldn't save Mrs. Thurmond herself from making quite the spectacle of herself with own DUI arrest a few years afterward.

This site soon to be Sizzle Bacon Eatery. Bacon themed restaurant.
San Jose? Not sure why they closed. Could it be frozen, poorly seasoned and prepared food? Columbia has yet to get a quality Mexican Restaurant to compare to the big cities.
