Bi-Lo, 2453 Charleston Highway: 24 January 2021 no comments
This store has been discussed several times in Have Your Say, but I had not yet gotten around to doing a closing on it. This Bi-Lo was out on the Charleston Highway not too far North of the I-26/I-77 interchange. As mentioned in this State story which I have linked many times, it was part of the package deal moving a number of local Bi-Lo stores to the Food Lion family. I did not drive by during the closing sale, but according to the article, the final day was expected to be 24 January, and as you can see, the Food Lion is now up and running.
Bi-Lo, 6021 Saint Andrews Road: March 2021 2 comments
This closing was announced so long ago that I have several months-old daylight sets of pictures -- which will turn up eventually. I know I have stopped at this store a number of times over the years, and it was fine, though I did not particularly like coming back out onto Saint Andrews Road going left as I think there is no left arrow at Piney Grove.
In the final event, this is another Bi-Lo destined to be come a Food Lion. This State article, which I have probably linked before, has the details.
I do note that their street sign leaves their product line rather open-ended: "Food &".
(Lots of chatter about this, but I think commenter Andrew gets the hat tip for the closing signs going up).
UPDATE 20 May 2021 -- The Food Lion is up and running now:
Big Star Grocery / Remington College, 607 Bush River Road: Late 2020 7 comments
I believe this building was built for the office supply chain OfficeMax, or at least that's what was in the storefront when I first became aware of it. Remington College moved in sometime around 2009, when the first picture above was taken.
I noticed about a week ago that the signage at the road and on the building had come down, but I'm unable to find any thing in the local media about it. The Facebook page for this location has entries up through Thanksgiving 2020, but no note about closing the campus. The main website for the school doesn't mention Columbia as a campus, though Wikipedia still does.
UPDATE 28 January 2021: Add Big Star to the post title based on the comments.
Bi-Lo, 7830 Garners Ferry Road: 14 February 2021 7 comments
I stopped at this Bi-Lo on Sunday, and while it was rapidly emptying out, there was still a good bit there, and they hadn't started randomly consolidating the shelves. I picked up some long lasting sundries like shampoo, hot sauce & spices at a 15% discount.
According to The Post & Courier, this store is not going to be converted into a Food Lion and there are no current plans for a new tenant in the building.
(Hat tip to commenter Alan, and possibly others -- there has been a lot of talk about Bi-Lo).
UPDATE 13 December 2021: Now a Food Lion:
Walmart, 1326 Bush River Road: 5 February 2021 10 comments
I used to wonder about this Walmart on Bush River Road in the old Bush River Mall location. I would be eating late at Fuddruckers or El Chico and decide I would stop by Walmart on the way home to pick up a few things when it was less crowded. The first few times I found it closed, I figured they were ramping up staffing and hours at a new store, but eventually I figured out it was never going to be a 24-hour store, as most were at that time.
The State has the story, attributing the closing to "low sales", though I suspect shrinkage and other factors played into things as well. The pharmacy will be closing this week, on 22 January.

UPDATE 1 April 2021 -- All the signage is down, though the place still looks pretty good:
UPDATE 9 November 2023 -- Here's a Youtube video about the store:
Bi-Lo, 4464 Devine Street: 7 February 2021 2 comments
Welp, here's another Bi-Lo closing to become a Food Lion. Google calls out the name of this strip mall as Crossroads Commons, which I don't believe I had ever heard. I meant to get inside over the weekend and didn't, but perhaps I will before the end.

Save A Lot #490, 1618 Airport Boulevard: 2019 3 comments
Save A Lot was the follow on in this building to Food Lion, and opened in 2011. I'm not exactly sure when it closed (especially since the phone company seems to have stopped leaving me phonebooks), but I'm guessing 2019 is about right given we had several others close within a year or so of that.
At any rate, it has been gone long enough for another follow-on to start up: Ahora Abierto which is a panaderia pasteleria which google translate suggests is a bakery & cake shop.

Bi-Lo, 300 Knox Abbott Drive: 10 January 2021 6 comments
This is one of the Bi-Lo locations slated to become a Food Lion, and the closing was announced so long ago that I have kind of lost track of who pointed it out to give a hat tip. Perhaps commenter ED, certainly it has been mentioned many times by many people. In fact, I took some pictures a good while ago, and then nothing ever happened, leading me to think I had read something wrong. Of course, as is usual, I have misplaced those pictures, so above are some from 10 January, just a few hours after the final closing.
(Thanks to all!)
Bi-Lo, 120 Forum Drive: 19 September 2020 1 comment
When commenter Sidney tipped that this store was closing on the 19th, I thought I would have the whole day to get out there and get some inside pictures. In the event, I think they closed for good at 5, and I got there around 6. I have to say that just from what I can see through the doors, it does not look as picked-over as I expected.
This store was part of the initial troubles faced by Sandhill, as the chain went bankrupt during the great recession, along with another Sandhill anchor (Sofa Express iirc) leaving the shopping center hurting for rent income. Bi-Lo eventually came out of bankruptcy, though it certainly has not had smooth sailing since then. I have forgotten all the details about who bought whom for all the Bi-Lo locations , but the plan is for this one to become a Lowes Foods.

UPDATE 14 October 2020 -- That was fast! This place is now open as a Lowes:
Greenwise Market, 5336 Sunset Boulevard Suite A: 29 August 2020 6 comments
I first wrote about this building when the plans for Fresh Market to open there fell through. After that, and a little scrambling, the Publix supermarket chain decided it would be a good location for their Greenwise concept:
Publix Supermarkets is opening a new type of grocery store in Lexington soon.
“We’re creating a community gathering place where high-quality natural and organic products are at the center of what we offer,” said Publix President Kevin Murphy. “And we’re helping our customers support their healthy lifestyle with convenient in-house prepared meals and grab and go options made from organic and antibiotic-free ingredients.”
The place opened in December of 2019, and will be closing well shy of the one year mark:
“We have made the difficult decision to close both GreenWise Market locations in South Carolina,” director of communications Maria Brous told Cola Daily. “Both locations were acquisitions that fit our needs at the time of opening; however, as our concept has evolved, the locations have space constraints that will not fit our current vision for GreenWise Markets.”
Basically it seems the building was just too small, which is unsurprising given the standard Fresh Market footprint.
The employees will have the option to move to local Publix locations, which is nice.
I never went in the store though I was a bit curious and figured I eventually would. I will say however, that I do not like the way the parking and traffic flow for the enclosing strip mall is laid out at all.

UPDATE 18 June 2022 -- It looks like Prisma Health will be going into this site:
