Somewhere In Time Antiques / Perkin' Beans Cafe & Smoothies!, 9701 Sumter Highway: Fall 2011   4 comments

Posted at 11:59 pm in Uncategorized

Then:

Now:

I would notice this little coffee shop on the Sumter Highway sometimes as I was heading for the beach, but if I was taking that route, I would either have taken care of my caffeine needs at Starbucks or it would be the outside of business hours anyway, so I never got around to stopping. It looks to have had a nice, quirky, interior.

Currently the rubric for Somewhere in Time Antiques is again visible on the building's west side, and commenter tonkatoy reports this interesting little building has also been a gas station and a magistrate's office.

General Sales Company, 7320 Garners Ferry Road: 2000s (moved)   no comments

Posted at 1:46 am in Uncategorized

This building on Garners Ferry next to Day's Inn and just down from Fantasy Lingerie and Maurice's Gourmet Barbecue has been vacant for a while as even the driveway is getting a bit cracked and overgrown. The last occupant was General Sales, Inc. who have since moved to Huger Street. I'm guessing they weren't the first tenants though, or at least I don't see why a food service company would have underground tanks as seems to be the case from the DHEC notice.

Palmetto Parent Magazine, 1624 Broad River Road: 2009 (moved)   1 comment

I recently noticed this little strip on Broad River Road, a little north of Boozer Shopping Center and on the other side of the road. It is mostly offices and services rather than retail.

Palmetto Parent Magazine seems to have started here around 2007. They are still very much around and putting out magazines, with their current office being at 6027 Garners Ferry Road. I have to say I really like their covers.

Sloan's Charcoal Hamburgers, 8010 Sumter Highway (8010 Garners Ferry Road) "Three Miles East of the Veteran's Hospital": 1970   7 comments

Posted at 10:34 pm in Uncategorized

Big thanks to commenter Gary, who sent in these pictures of Sloan's Drive-In on the Sumter Highway, and says that it was located near Universal Drive. The pictures are from an old Lower Richland yearbook, and apparently the restaurant owner was a LR booster to judge from the signs.

I have to say that I absolutely no memory of ever seeing this place, and we used the Sumter Highway to go to the beach for most of the 1960s and early 70s (until I-20 made Screaming Eagle Road an attractive option). Gary puts the restaurant in the 1970s, but I'm a bit skeptical. The design aesthetic looks much earlier to me, 50s or 60s, and I can't find a yellow pages listing for the place in my 1970 restaurant pages (or any other of the '70s pages I have here at home). Anyone have any personal recollections of the place? The country could certainly use a good $0.19 hamburger!

UPDATE 23 October 2011 -- Ok, I have done a little checking at the library, and this is what I found out about Sloan's:

They first listed in the December 1967 Southern Bell phonebook, and last listed in the December 1969 directory. They ran the same Yellow Pages ad (reproduced below) in each year of their listing. Also, as mentioned in the comments, the 8010 Garners Ferry Road address where Sloan's sat has been subsumed as part of Grace Hill Plaza, which is officially 8006 Garners Ferry Road. Also, the official name was Sloan's Charcoal Hamburgers so I have changed the post title from Sloan's Hamburger Drive-In to that.

Steve's Subs, 7546 Garners Ferry Road Suite 280-B: Summer 2011   no comments

Posted at 11:06 pm in closing

I normally wouldn't do two Garners Ferry posts in succession (unless I were out of pictures..), but commenter Terry mentioned this place just yesterday (after a spam comment brought it back to the top of the "recent comments" list) saying:

I visited Steve’s on Garners Ferry 3 or 4 times and they had really good sandwiches. Every time I was the only patron in the shop and a lunch crowd of one will not go very far. The parking lot in front of the store is usually packed so I do not know where all the shoppers were.

Well it appears that a lunch crowd of one has gone as far as it could, and the place is now closed. When I first posted about it (in the closing for Larry's) in February 2010, Steve's had taken over two old Larry's locations (that I knew of for sure). Now it appears that both of them have gone under.

More curiously, the sign in the window proclaims "Hibachi Grill Coming Soon" when Mushi Mushi hibachi just a few units down in the same strip closed in September 2010..

UPDATE 3 November 2011 -- Looks like Japan Grill is close to opening:

UPDATE 25 October 2018: Update title with suite info. Add map icon. Update tags.

Sister Rose palmistry / antiques / riding school / Wateree Arms, 9321 Garners Ferry Road: 2009   5 comments

Posted at 12:39 am in Uncategorized

I had noticed this building on the Sumter Highway in Hopkins several times over the past few years, usually just as I had passed it. I never really got a good look, but had it in my mind that it must be an abandoned motel as in Stratford Arms or Cornell Arms (though I don't believe that building was ever a hotel). With that mindset kind of locked in I had to do a double take when I finally stopped by and found that the "arms" were fire-arms.

The place listed in the February 2008 phonebook, but not the February 2010 one so I'm guessing it closed in 2009, though the condition of the roof-line is pretty bad for just a few years off. I'm not sure what the building would have been originally. Certainly Wateree Arms was not the first tenant (and is in fact not listed in the Feb 1997 book). It was obviously a store of some sort, but not, I think, a gas station as there is not room in front for pumps.

UPDATE 15 July 2011: Added Sister Rose, antiques and riding school to post title based on info by commenter tonkatoy.

Hair Tamers, 6070-C Garners Ferry Road: 2011 (moved)   2 comments

Posted at 1:41 am in Uncategorized

I was Shoppes At Woodhill this afternoon, and noticed that Hair Tamers next to Qdoba was gone. I am over there fairly frequently, and think I would have noticed it before if it weren't pretty recent, but I can't say for sure (especially as my eyes tend to slide right over beauty shops).

I have to say that the name itself conjures up the image of Bugs Bunny fighting the hair monster ("Gossamer"):

UPDATE 30 June 2011: Commenter gary says they have moved to Landmark Square so I have added "moved" to the post title. I'll try to get a picture at some point.

Correll's Body Shop, South Bolton Street: 1990s(?)   20 comments

Posted at 11:58 pm in Uncategorized

This burned out body shop sits in an odd little area that I really knew nothing about. I noticed it the other week when I was getting onto I-77 West-bound from Garners Ferry Road. The area is rather industrial, with a transformer substation and nearby rail-spur, and must have been, I think, radically different before I-77 was pushed through. I'm saying "South Bolton Street" based on mapquest -- I couldn't actually see any name on the little spur leading from Planters Drive to this building, and if it's really a public street, it's a pretty forgotten one at least for any maintenance crews.

In particular, there's Veteran's Road and Old Veterans Road which must have been re-routed at that time. I also suspect that there was another road where the I-77 on-ramp is now that ran in front of the building, as the name is painted on the side which is not currently accessible by road. As for what that name is exactly, I can't say. I thought I could read it from the on-ramp, but I can't recall what I thought I saw, and the picture I took from there turned out quite poorly as far as being able to make out those letters. The "Body Shop" is clear enough, but for the first part I can only get "c-o-r-r-e-something-something".

I'm just guessing as to the time-frame for the closing. Certainly it's been long enough for the exposed interior to be pretty thoroughly tagged with graffitti.

UPDATE 28 March 2011: I've added the name "Correll's" based on the comments.

Colony House Furniture, 6033 Garners Ferry Road: Feb 2011   8 comments

Posted at 11:30 pm in closing

I actually had Colony House's going-out-of-busines circular given to me by my sister a few weeks ago and of course put it "somewhere I can't possibly forget it", meaning it has completely vanished for now.

As I recall, it was a bit vague about when Colony House would actually close its doors, but I believe it should be done by now. Apparently the store was founded in 1945, so that was a pretty good run. I can't actually say much about the store from personal experience as I've only bought one new piece of furniture in my life, and it wasn't from there. Colony House is across Garners Ferry from San Jose about where Pelham Drive comes out and it's a nice brick building though the parking lot is a bit hard to get in and out of.

As of now, the web site is still up, though it has no mention of the closing, and indeed seems not to have been updated since 2008.

UPDATE 2 Feb 2011 -- Well, I jumped the gun a little bit, as of 29 Jan, it's still open, though apparently winding down:

Updated the post title date to "Feb 2011" rather than "Jan 2011"

UPDATE 28 June 2016 -- The building has been razed, and the site is now in preparation to be a Discount Tire:

Laundry / Rivers Variety Store / Jerry Thompson / The Locker Room, 10101 Garners Ferry Road (Eastover): 1990s (?)   2 comments

Posted at 12:54 am in closing

I noticed this place in Eastover on the west side of The Sumter Highway just past Horrell Hill last week. This former restaurant and pool hall has obviously been there quite a while, and has just as obvioiusly been out of business for many years too. (In addition to the clinging vines, most of the roof seems to be gone as you can tell in some of these shots). I suspect from the "Video Games" signage that it was last open during the video poker era, but not until the actual end of that era as it does not seem to be listed in the 1998 phonebook.

I got Rivers Variety Store and The Locker Room from the signs. Googling the phone number, (803) 783-5440 brought up the Jerry Thompson name.

UPDATE 21 Dec 2010: Added Laundry to post title based on the comments.

UPDATE 31 January 2023 -- This building has been razed:

Also adding map icon.
