Columbia Closings   What's not in Columbia anymore

I was unable to find this little thrift store (a few spaces to the left of the package store) listed in any of my at-home phonebooks, but I'm guessing it closed 2009-ish.

We've talked about this move in various places here over the past few months, but clothing store Hamrick's has finally made the move from the now totally defunct (for retail) MarketPointe Centre into the old Circuit City building across I-20 at 1950 Bush River Road.

As you can see, construction has already started at the old location to refit it for the expansion of the existing SCDOR offices at MarketPointe.

Here's another closing in Sparkleberry Square. I can't say much about Dress Barn other than they sell women's clothes, and I always thought it was an iffy name ("that dress makes you look like the broad side of a barn"). Interestingly (or not), Sparkleberry Square has now flanked Kroger with clothing closings, men's to the right of Kroger and women's to the left.

Fashion's Unlimited was the follow-on operation in this building to S & K Menswear. I had noticed it several times driving through the area, but had never managed to get pictures to update the S & K post until quite recently.

When I posted them, commenter Andrew mentioned that he thought Fashion's Unlimited was already itself gone despite the prominent "Now Open" banner, so next time I was in the area, I stopped to make a closer check.

According to the door sign, it turns out that Fashion's Unlimited has moved into Dutch Square and that this building is now on the market again. Given the length of time that the old Sounds Familiar storefront has stayed vacant, I don't expect any quick turnaround.

M Boutique on Devine Street has closed its doors in preparation for a move to the new Whole Foods complex.

Of course that shopping center isn't anywhere near ready to occupy:

so the new location isn't scheduled to open until October, meaning that there will be no revenue coming in for 4+ months -- it seems very odd timing.

I'm afraid I'm well past prom age, so I wasn't really aware of this little formal-wear shop in the plaza which houses the Forest Acres location of D's Wings until I saw the storefront empty the other night.

Dazzles is listed in this year's (February 2012) phonebook, so the closing seems to be fairly recent. I wonder if the economy is cutting into prom spending -- it certainly has affected everything else.

UPDATE 21 May 2012: Commenter Larry notes that Dazzles has moved to Boozer Shopping Center, so I have added "moved" to the post title.

Hi-Lites Ladies'Clothing ("Name Brands At Outlet Prices") seems to mainly follow a small town strategy. Apart from this Cayce store, the chain's locator page lists the other Carolinas' locations as

Albemarle, Atlantic Beach, Clinton (NC), Laurinburg, Lincolnton, Monroe, Mount Olive, Newton, Sanford, Shelby, Whiteville, Bennettsville, Dillon and Lancaster

It's interesting that by putting their "Columbia" store in Cayce, they got a somewhat similar area, but inside a fairly major Metro. Of course, apparently it didn't work out for them.

Parkland Plaza had been on a bit of an upswing lately, with the Ace Hardware re-opening, and the Dollar Discount being replaced, but this closing and that of Dollar General (which I will probably get to soon) along with the continuing vacancy at the old Parkland Pharmacy/CVS site put the place back almost to square one.

UPDATE 4 April 2012 -- I went back when I could stop and got some better pictures:

Well, this little Harden Street storefront has had more activity over the years than I was really aware of.

I vaguely recall Leon's Bookstore and think I went in there once or twice, though I can't recall actually buying anything. It seems that Leon was a last name, not a first name and technically has an acute accent over the 'o'. This record from the Secretary of State's office indicates that the store set up shop (or filed papers at any rate) in December of 1989, and dissolved through forfeiture in November of 1994.

I know nothing about Moxie Gift Gallery other than it comes up in google searches for "631-C Harden"

The Oops Company is a catalog clothing store which apparently moved to 601 Harden Street, and is still there. I figured from the name that it was a factory-seconds store, but that appears not to be the case.

Finally, the current vacancy is due to the closing of Five Points Nails and Spa. According to The Columbia Star they filed for a zoning variance on 8 September 2009, giving them a run of a bit over two years in this spot.

Tall Finery was a clothing store, presumably for tall women, in Boozer Shopping center, on the same side of the plaza a The Book Dispensary, Dems House of Diamonds and Ron Graham Allergy & Air Quality. Come to think of it, that side (the north one) has been hit pretty hard in recent years.

If all went as planned, the space should be a contract Post Office by now, which makes sense as I can't think of a Fed-Ex or UPS Store in the general area.

I was having lunch at The Pizza Palace a bit ago when I noticed that the storefront next door was vacant. Leonardo's is in this year's phonebook (February 2011) so I'm saying the move was this year (and I'm pretty sure it was still there a few months ago). I don't know anything about the custom clothing business, but I imagine that it has been another area impacted by the Internet as you can now upload your designs and get them delivered without leaving the house. (You can even have M&Ms custom printed!)
