The Puddlin' Duck Restaurant & Pub, 108 Columbia Northeast Drive Suite G: Spring 2013 8 comments
This little Irish pub was tucked away at the bottom of the hill in the little strip mall fronted by Dunkin' Donuts. In fact, it was so tucked away that while every time I saw it, I meant to try it out sometime, it would always slip my mind completely when I actually was looking to go somewhere.
I noticed recently when I was looking at Golden City, that it had, so to speak, changed its stripes and is now Kwagga.
Futon Lifestyle / B & B Womenswear, 1599 Broad River Road: 2010 no comments
Here's another Boozer Shooping Center storefront, this one a clothes store. B & B aparently closed shop in 2010, or at least they were listed in the Feb 2010 phonebook, but not the Feb 2011 book.
Before that in the mid 2000s, the place was Futon Lifestyle. All I can say from the brief and painful periods I have spent on those most awkward neither fish nor fowl items of furniture, is that I am not cut out for a futon lifestyle..
Truly Scrumptious Catering, 6801 Saint Andrews Road: mid-2000s (moved) 1 comment
Back to Saint Andrews Road again today.
I like the quail logo on this Irmo strip mall...
From what I can tell, Truly Scrumptious Catering moved from here to 1937 Augusta Highway in Lexington around 2006, and are still there today in a much nicer building/banquet hall.
Suite, 2841 Millwood Avenue: 2000s 3 comments
This building is a good ways off the front-street side of Millwood and I had driven by many times without quite thinking about what was back there.
I'm a bit unsure of the story here, there is a Groomingdale's pet grooming business at 1015 Butler Street, and it's been there at least as far back as 1996, with no listing for this location. My initial thought was that it moved to Butler from here, but that would mean this spot has been vacant at least 17 years, which seems hard to credit...
UPDATE 5 June 2013: OK, ignore the above... Got to playing around with google maps and realized that this *is* 1015 Butler street, or at least the front of the building is. That means that Groomingdale's (the original post title) is still there and OK and the vacant spot will have been some other, unknown, business. Anyone know what it was?
Polish Distribution LLC, 6903 Saint Andrews Road: 2013 3 comments
There are only a few words in English that change meaning (and pronuciation) when capitalized, and Polish Distribution is vague enough and capitalized enough that either meaning could apply here, so the little nail polish bottle in logo is a nice disambiguation touch.
Monterrey Mexican Restaurant, 114 Afton Court: May 2013 5 comments
Here's another closed Monterrey on the west side of the metro area.
Afton Court seems to be something of a hard-luck street over the last several years with the closing of Ritz Camera (though technically on another street) and more recently Bailey's.
I like the use of steps on this lot, including a set descending towards the adjacent movie theater.

UPDATE 9 April 2014 -- Here are a few pictures from early January 2014 of the new building, which is now open. (Unfortunately, it was a very grey day):
Hertz Rental Cars, 202 West Main Street (Lexington): 2009 4 comments
Here's another place with the old sign turned around in the sign-box to keep the weather out. It's not something I had ever noticed before starting this blog, but something I've seen many times since then.
I think I've used Hertz a few times at various airports around the country and they were fine (not that there's much to differentiate the big rental outfits). Personally, I hate driving a rental. I've got my car aged to perfection, and set up like I want it, and nothing else really fills the bill.
I'm guessing at a 2009 date here. Earlier phonebooks have them at 744 West Main, and later ones don't have them at all, but I happen to be missing the actual 2009 book.
I really like the "stained glass" on the side of the building.
