Mattress Source, 107 Harbison Boulevard: 11 December 2012 (buyout) 12 comments
As detailed here, on 11 December 2012, Mattress Firm bought out Mattress Source and all the Mattress Source stores were closed temporarily for re-branding.
I missed the buyout news, not being in the mattress market currently, but noticed the new banner over the old marquee when I was driving down Harbison recently. Since I don't have a dog in the fight, I'll say that I like the name Mattress Firm better than Mattress Source as it works (presumably intentionally) as a play on words.
I'll also say that while I have no opinion yea or nay on their mattresses, I continue to admire the Tempurpedic logo.
You wouldn't think that you could get away with plastering a shapely undraped female derriere all over your marquee and front yard, but they do. Granted they have toned down the, um, cleavage from a few years ago:
UPDATE 19 September 2022 -- As mentioned in the comments, the building has come down. Also there seems to be a lot of land clearing behind the old site as well:
Also updating tags and adding map icon.
UPDATE 7 October 2022 -- Here are a few shots from the start of the teardown:
El Toro Mexican Grill, 806 Saint Andrews Road: Thanksgiving 2012 6 comments
This spot on Saint Andrews Road just east of the I-26 interchange has been much restauranted over the years as you can see here, here, here and here.
In general my theory is that it's too hard to get back to I-26 from this spot, or indeed to do anything requiring coming out of the parking lot and going westbound on Saint Andrews Road. In this case though, there may have been other factors in play as sadly a security guard was shot and killed here on 25 August 2012 as detailed in this State story. While it appears the culprits were caught, that incident certainly has to have given people pause. And while it appears to have been related to a late-night switchover to night-club operation, still I would have hesitated to go myself after that even during the day. I certainly would not have taken any kids.
At any rate, the place seems to have kept on until Thanksgiving at which time they closed down, and did not re-open as planned. Curiously letters are already peeling from the roadside sign, and missing from the rooftop marquee.
UPDATE 27 Jan 2013: Added the bouncy-castle picture of the Grand Opening.
UPDATE 26 January 2023 -- Interesting this update is almost exactly ten years since the last one! Anyway, as reported in the comments, this building has been razed:
Also adding map icon.
UPDATE 8 February 2023 -- I got some more pictures from inside the parking lot this time:
The Hut, 3106 Broad River Road Suite J: late 2000s no comments
This small urban wear shop was in a little strip mall on Broad River Road more or less across from Widewater Square. I can't find it in my phonebooks, so I'll just put the closing date at "late 2000s".
Corner Kick, 7001 Saint Andrews Road: December 2012 3 comments
Here's The State story on the closing of Corner Kick, just down from the former Marinoni's in Murraywood Centre.
When I got by last Sunday, the place was still apparently still open (though closed for the day), but already referring customers to Todd & Moore with their door signs. My guess is that the poster is probably David Beckham or someone similar -- I wouldn't want to come up on that one unexpectedly.
Car Wash, 3307 Broad River Road: 2000s (open again) 2 comments
I don't know much about this self-service car wash in between Widewater Square and Nancy's Nook other than it has seen better days (the LoopNet listing marks it as "distressed" and as an "office building").
The interesting thing is that although I must have driven past it dozens if not hundreds of times before, I can honestly say that when I saw it the other day, I had no memory whatsoever of ever having seen it before.
I've never really seen the point of this kind of wash. Just spend the extra $3.00 and drive through one with the foam and buffer.
UPDATE 23 November 2016 -- Someone has rehabilitated this wash, and it is now open again:
Stingers / Marinoni's, 7001 Saint Andrews Road: 7 comments
I first knew this place as Al Amir.
After that closed, a bar called Stingers set up shop, and I totally missed the fact that it had closed until *its* follow-on operation, Marinoni's had also closed.
Actually it may not be strictly accurate to say that Stingers closed. According to this Free Times story, the same owner ran both restaurants, so it's more accurate to say that Stingers transitioned into Marinoni's. Unfortunately, I never got to either, and I have to say the pizza described in The Free Times sounds really good.
IrmoJeff had a bit more to say about Stingers here.

Coffee Kiosk, Murraywood Centre Saint Andrews Road: November 2012 (coming back) 2 comments
Last year, a work friend of mine and her husband were driving from DC to Florida with a sidetrip to Clemson, and would be coming through Columbia on I-26. She suggested we meet for lunch, and wanting to give her a fairly straight shot off of and onto the Interstate, I suggested Al Amir on Saint Andrews road with Harbison as the connector.
"You can't miss it," I told them, "the restaurant is kind of below street level, but just go to the strip mall with the coffee kiosk in the front of the parking lot!"
The punchline is, of course, that when I got out there to meet them, I saw the kisok was gone, and they confirmed when they finally got there that they had had a Dickens of a time with my directions, and that point in particular...
Now, the kiosk, or another similar one under the name of Loveland Coffee, is coming back.
I may well buy a cup there -- but I don't think I'll include it in my directions!
Carolina Wings & Rib House, 7587 Saint Andrews Road: August 2012 18 comments
Video:
I think taking the time and trouble to program a Thank You message into the roadside message board was a nice touch.
This storefront (which looks to me as though it may once have been a grocery) on Saint Andrews Road north of Lake Murray Boulevard was the first location for the Carolina Wings & Rib House chain. I'm not sure what the "Smokehouse" marquee signifies exactly -- I don't believe I have noticed that at other Carolina Wings locations.

Piggly Wiggly Store No. 102 / Display Center, 655 Saint Andrews Road: 2001 / 30 November 2011 29 comments
This was the first location for Piggly Wiggly store number 102.
If I have the story straight, then this store closed in 2001, moved and re-opened in the former Harris Teeter at 4350 Saint Andrews Road (and then closed for good).
After that, the Display Center appliance store moved in, and closed on 30 November 2011, leaving an interesting assortment of items behind.
This location is directly across Jamil Road from former Hilltop Restaurant, and in the same plaza as the former Capitol News Stand.

UPDATE 4 September 2012: Fixed typo in DC closing date.
UPDATE 21 November 2020: Added map icon.
Software Seconds, 4508 Saint Andrews Road Suite 3: 2012 (moved) 19 comments
This little storefront on Saint Andrews Road more or less across from the big industrial plant was in the used software business, presumably mostly games as the text of the (now painted over) marquee is: Software Seconds New & Used Video Games.
Like Labrasca's it has been reported closed before, but this time is definitely the real thing. They are listed in the February 2012 phonebook, so for lack of any better information, I'm just giving the date as 2012.
I don't know about console games, but pretty much anything that runs on a PC platform is pirated out the wazoo on the Internet now, and that puts stores like this one in the same fix as CD stores (and, increasingly, video stores).
UPDATE 27 August 2012 -- The store has moved to 6903 Saint Andrews Road on the other side of Harbison and is still in business.
