NAPA Auto Parts, 4507 Hardscrabble Road: early October 2012 4 comments
Here is another closed NAPA store.
While I certainly hope that the employees are able to continue on at 3720 Two Notch Road, calling it a move is not quite right as that store has existed for several years, and was apparently built to replace the O'Neil Court location.
Interestingly, the phonebook (Feb 2012) gives the address for the Hardscrabble store as "1507 Hardscrabble Road", which led me on a merry chase all the way from Wilson, and when 1507 was in the boonies and obviously wrong, across both Farrow and Clemson. I probably wouldn't do *that* again, at least not close to rush hour. In fact this store turns out to be just a few buildings down from the old Santorini Grill and a few up from the former Food Lion and Blockbuster.
Master Cleaners & Laundry, 2843 Millwood Avene: early October 2012 2 comments
Commenter Mayr Douglass mentions that many (or all) Master Cleaners in Columbia have closed recently. So far, I've only checked out this one, on the corner of Millwood & Hagood Avenues.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, Master's was a constant radio presence while I was growing up, with their memorable jingle often playing on WIS
Look Your Best All The Day
In Clothes Cleaned the Mas-ter-ful Way.
You'll feel the diff-er-ence
Know the diff-er-ence
And what's more
You'll *show* the diff-er-ence!

UPDATE 18 September 2013 -- It's now Provisions Bulk Foods & Spices:
This story from The State talks about the new operation.
WECO Billiards, 750 Meeting Street: 2000s 4 comments
I really like the sign here at the former WECO Billiards. It has a similar aesthetic to Varsity Billiards and Red Wing Rollerway.
This site for the current owners of the building (note the clever URL) says it was built originally as a grocery. It was still operating as a billiard hall in the February 1997 phonebook, but by the time of the next one I have here at home (February 2007), the listing was gone. Since then it appears to have been a thrift store, and now houses a number of operations as detailed at the previous link.
Yumilicious, 4710 Forest Drive Suite C: September 2012 1 comment
I believe I went into this Yumilicious on Forest Drive once last year. While in theory I liked the idea, in the event every single variety of yogurt was either low-fat or no-fat, so I ended up going across the street to Baskin Robbins.
The closing sign mentions that the Lexington store is still open. Or, if you would rather stay in Forest Acres, 32 Degrees is still in Trenholm Plaza.
And no, I'm not going to try to figure out how to put the dots over the 'm' :-)

UPDATE 9 January 2013 -- It's now a Chiropractic clinic called The Joint:
Nik's Shoe Closet, 1581 Broad River Road: Spring 2012 no comments
This ladies' shoe store in Boozer Shopping Center apparently set up shop in July of 2011. I'm not sure exactly when it closed, but the storefront was papered over by the time of this 31 May 2012 shot.

North Springs Dentistry, 2000 Clemson Road Suite 15: 2012 (moved) 4 comments
Magnolia Pointe is the Piggly Wiggly anchored strip mall at the South-East corner of Clemson & Hardscrabble Roads, with access from both.
I noticed last time I was there that this dental office space was up for lease (and already down from the mall marquee listing).
UPDATE 22 October 2012: Turns out they've moved to 126 Professional Park Road at Professional Park on Clemson Road.
Indian River Fruit Stand, A1A Yulee Florida: mid-1970s no comments
I wish I had gotten better pictures of this place. Heavens knows I had enough opportunities over the years, but I never thought about it until quite recently, and the last few times I was in the area, it was either evening or heavily overcast, otherwise it might have been a picture on my Roadside Florida calendar.
This fruit stand was on A1A in Yulee Florida between I-95 (exit 373) and US-17. If you look closely on the door, you can see a Master Charge logo which dates the place to before 1979, when Master Charge changed to Master Card.
I like the shape of the building from the sides, and the wood cutout lettering and fruit shapes. It's the type of place that, while you may find its like still in service, is not being built anymore.
The fruit stand and an abandoned service station of the same vintage (about which I may do a closing eventually) stood on adjacent lots. As you can see in the later pictures, both have now been knocked down and the land is for sale (apparently interest is not high, as the price has been reduced).
And not to worry about being able to find Indian River citrus and Florida souveniers in Yulee.. Across the street from this stand's former location, a converted Stuckey's still offers all you could wish for:
Esso / Exxon, 6015 Farrow Road: 1970s 1 comment
This former Exxon is on Farrow Road where it intersects with Broadland Avenue and is now an independant auto repair operation. I wish it had been a sunnier day so these pictures were less gray and dreary, but that's the way it was, and I don't go by there very often.
Admittedly my closing date is just a guess here, as is postulating that this station started as an Esso, but the gull-wing lights lead me to think it was built before 1970, and the Esso/Exxon switch didn't happen until 1973.
Furthermore, the rounded style of the kerosene pump together with the fact that the price only has two digits (plus 1/10ths of a cent) leads me to think the station didn't make it past the 1970s.
Forest Lake Shopping Center, 4801 Forest Drive: 1982 9 comments
A distant view of the whole shopping center plot:
The First Citizens stands more or less exactly where Campbell's Drugstore was:
The new Forest Acres Town Clock:
The Talbot's building is where the far end of the first building was:
This is the second building of Forest Lake Shopping Center which is still standing today:
Sakura was Christo's Roast Beef House as well as Moolan's Hide-Away, Biddie Banquet and serveral other restaurants:
Coplon's was originally Colonial grocery:
This was originally Dobbs House and several other restaurants:
The Forest Lake Shopping Center Park was originally owned by Colonial and fell into disrepair after that store closed:
This was the original location of Forest Lake TV:
The current garden center (not to be confused with the one sometimes listed below) and Webb Rawls gallery/framing center share the old First Citizens location, with the gallery being in the old main building (the vault is still in there) and the garden center being in the drive-through buildings and parking lot. I suspect the listings below give several different bank tenants for this slot, but I'm not sure which are here and which are elsewhere in the shopping center:
Forest Lake Shopping Center was the name of the shopping center at the North-East corner of Trenholm Road & Forest Drive, across Forest Drive from Trenholm Plaza and across Trenholm Road from Five Guys and Forest Acres Town Hall.
As I remember Forest Lake Shopping Center it never quite thrived the way Trenholm Plaza did, and over the years it gradually got a bit dowdy. In the end, instead of giving the place some TLC and a facelift, the main building was torn down to be replaced by a two new ones, a First Citizens bank and Talbot's. (Just recently the Forest Acres town clock was put up at the corner of the old Shopping Center Space).
The second original building of Forest Lake Shopping Center still stands and now houses Coplon's, Sakura and several other shops.
As you can see from the listings below, the city directory went back and forth on whether Dobb's House (in the corner of the parking lot) and the Garden Center (across Gills Creek) were offical parts of the shopping center or not. You can also see that they also incorrectly listed Trenholm Plaza fixtures Piggly Wiggly and the Post Office as being in Forest Lake Shopping Center
Rather than reproducing images from the city directories, I have opted to type them in, so search engines can find them here. That means I have probably made some typos that I will fix as they are pointed out. Also note that the early listings for the shopping center did not have suite numbers. When they started being given, I have reproduced them. Even then, not every shop was always given a number.
I have given 1982 as the closing date for Forest Lake Shopping Center because that was the last year it was a separate listing in the City Directory. Apparently at that point, they gave up running it as a going shopping center, and thereafter every shop got its own street address. However, the building was not torn down until sometime after 1984. I should have continued looking in directories after that, but for some reason I did not.
1957
No separate listing for Forest Lake Shopping Center as such was given in the 1957 city directory, but a number of the shops are listed as standalones.

UPDATE 19 October 2012: I have been reminded in the comments that this shopping center pre-dates Trenholm Plaza and that the Piggly Wiggly and Post Office did in fact start here before moving across the street. (Piggly Wiggly is, of course now long gone, but the Post Office remains in Trenholm Plaza).
