Store, 7540 Fairfield Road: 1970s(?) no comments
I can't find any information on this old building on Fairfield Road other than it was apparently built in 1945. However, it looks like an old country grocery or general store to me, and could in fact be a twin building to The Other Store on Atascadero:
Sha Sha's Last Stop Party Shop, 6208 Fairfield Road: late 2000s no comments
Actually I'm not at all confident on a closing date for this little ABC store on Fairfield Road just north of I-20 as it does not appear in any phonebooks I have. However the place, while showing some wear, especially along the roofline, and sitting in a somewhat overgrown lot, is still in pretty good shape, so I'll go with late 2000s.
I like the name!
Kay's Bar & Grill / J&H Grocery / Samuel's Grocery / Brown's Billiards & Arcades / Brown's Diner & Grocery, 7130 Fairfield Road: 2000s 2 comments
This building just north of I-20 at the corner of Fairfield & Sharpe Roads has apparently been quite a number of things according to google, though mostly iterations of bar/restaurant and grocery. Brown's was the last tenant, or at least anyone after them never repainted, but I cannot find any active listing in my 1997 or 2007-2012 phonebooks, so I'm just leaving the closing date as "2000s".
The lot is a little bit overgrown, but the building still seems to be in pretty good shape. It wouldn't surprise me for somebody else to give it a go here.

Here's a rather overgrown building on Fairfield Road to the north of I-20 that apparently has been a number of things over the years, but most recently housed three related service businesses.

Golden Skillet / Good Day Chinese Restaurant, 5128 Fairfield Road Suite C: 2011 6 comments
Good Day Chinese Restaurant in North Columbia Square on Fairfield Road reminds me a bit of the old Chung King restaurant in Intersection Center, at least as far as having painstaking, attractive, woodwork nailed to the bricks.
The building itself obviously predates Good Day and it's on the tip of my tongue what it must have been originally, but for some reason I'm drawing a blank.
UPDATE 30 September 2012 -- Tender as Quail! Tasty as Pheasant!
Commenters have identified the original tenant of this building as Golden Skillet and pictures like this one confirm that. I don't know when that closed, but it was before the February 1997 phonebook, and Wikipedia suggests the chain went into decline after 1981.
