Hardee's / Silver City, 538 Knox Abbott Drive: 2 December 2017 4 comments
Mostly I knew Silver City from their old location at 906 Knox Abbott Drive. When I was a graduate assistant every Wednesday (I think it was Wednesday..) when the new comics came out, I would drive from campus to there and peruse the weekly haul.
They moved to this old Hardee's building closer to the river while I was living out of town. I did stop by several times, but by that point, I was getting my fix through a mail-order subscription service, so it wasn't quite the same, though the staff was quite pleasant and I did pick up some stuff.
According to their Facebook page the store's last day was 2 December 2017. When I took these pictures, I had a brief chat with the building owner who said that they were looking for a new tenant in the building as is rather than taking it down and starting over. I was glad to hear that, as these old Hardee's buildings are pretty thin on the ground now. After the razing of the one at Eggroll Station, this is the last in the Columbia area, and I believe the owner said there were only one or two elsewhere.

UPDATE 12 October 2021 -- Now The Modern Locksmith.com:
Also adding map icon.
UPDATE 13 August 2022 -- Here is a picture from commenter Jimmy Freeman of the roadside sign for this building when it was a Hardee's:
Aaron's, 1105 12th Street: Spring 2018 2 comments
As noted by commenter Andrew, the Aaron's on 12th Street in Cayce has closed. The sign pitches it as a move, but I'm pretty sure both of the locations mentioned were already in existence.
I'm not sure what this building was built for, but given that the right hand part looks like former automotive bays, I'd guess some sort of repair operation.

BB&T, 2500 Charleston Highway: 2017 2 comments
These are some not very good drive-by pictures of this branch at the corner of The Charleston Highway and Old Dunbar Road. There is a much better one in the real estate listing here.
I had it in my mind that the building had been vacant for longer, but it is listed in the February 2017 phonebook, so most likely it closed during 2017 (though as I said a few posts ago, the accuracy of phonebook information is dropping).
At any rate, the process of banks de-branching (pruning?) continues.
UPDATE 28 September 2021: Updating tags and adding map icon.
McDonald's, 1303 Charleston Highway: Summer 2017 (open again) 5 comments
As mentioned by commenter Andrew, here is another McDonald's undergoing upfit to the new style. This one is on the Charleston Highway adjacent to the recently closed Church's Chicken. The setup with two signs seems a little unusual to me, but perhaps I just haven't been paying attention.

UPDATE 7 February 2018 -- As mentioned in the comments, this store is open again:
$2.49 / $2.79 Dry Cleaners, 904 Knox Abbot Drive: 2016 (moved) 3 comments
I first knew this storefront as Silver City Comics back when I was in college in the 80s. I know they were there as late as 1997, so I'm not sure when $2.49 moved in, but it's been a good number of years. I noticed the other week that they are gone and the place is now a Latin (but apparently not Mexican) restaurant.
UPDATE 6 April 2017 -- Hmm apparently I did this post and it was one of the ones that vanished in the database crash. I see it in the wayback machine, and will try to bring in those pictures later. I also see there that they moved from "$2.49" to "$2.79" before moving, so I'm updaing the post title with the higher price and "moved".
Chef Aaron's Southern Cuisine, 1301 State Street: 2015(?) 2 comments
This was the follow-on operation to J. Patrick's Southern Kitchen on State Street. I'm not quite sure when it closed as I can't find it in my phonebooks. After two similarly themed closings, perhaps this is just not a good location for a down home restaurant.
HiLights / So You Want To Dance / Columbia Beauty School, 1824 Airport Boulevard: 2016-ish 3 comments
These are not great pictures of this office building at the corner of Airport Boulevard & Dale Lane as the sun was against me. Google suggests that the place has housed a variety of businesses, probably several at the same time. You can see the sign for HiLights here, which I take to be a hair salon, though I can't quite read the rest of the sign. Perhaps it was associated with the beauth school.
It is hard to see, but it appears that the ground floor of the building has stained glass windows in front, though I see no indication that it was ever a church.
Church's Chicken, 1209 Charleston Highway: Early 2017 11 comments
I think I've mentioned my aversion to feathered fare several times here, so it should be no surprise that I never darkened the door at this Church's Chicken more or less accross from the old Shoney's. I suppose for different reasons, not enough other people did either.

UPDATE 10 March 2017: Changed the closing date from "Late 2016" to early "2017" based on the comments.
UPDATE 18 August 2017 -- It appears some sort of work has started here. The building permit is for SC Wings & Deli:
Motel 6, 613 Knox Abbott Drive: 2017 6 comments
Vegas Sports Bar & Grill / Fuego / Boulevard Cafe / The Hanger Sports Bar, 1832 Airport Boulevard: Late April 2015 3 comments
This little building on Airport Boulevard has apparently been a host of clubs over the years. I rember a few of the names that google turned up, but not all of them.
Most recently it was The Hanger Sports Bar and this Facebook page king of suggests, without ever saying so directly that it closed in late April of 2015.
