The Cotton Gin, 632 Harden Street: 25 November 2023 no comments
As mentioned in the closing for New Brookland Tavern, that operation will be moving to this famous storefront on Harden Street. What wasn't clear to me from the stories (The State & The Free Times) was exactly what was to happen to The Cotton Gin. When I went by Five Points a few weeks ago, it appeared to still be open, and there are recent Google reviews. I still have not seen anything in the media pinning things down, but judging from their Instagram feed, it appears that 25 November will be the last day for The Cotton Gin.
Burger Family Restaurant, 901 West Dekalb Street (Camden): 1960s no comments
Before I-20 came in, we would take US-1 through Camden whenever we would go to visit relatives in Hartsville. Often on those trips (or whenever we could nag successfully enough) our parents would let us stop for lunch at the Burger Family restaurant. In retrospect, there was nothing special about it, it was a standard hamburger stand in a town that didn't yet have a McDonald's, but it was someplace different, and that's what mattered. At this point, I can only recall three things about it: The manager had a hearing aide; the burger names were family themed: Papa Burger (the largest) , Mama Burger (more "normal" sized) and some kind of kids burger, the cute name of which I can't recall, and they always got something about the order wrong. It became a running joke with us.
After Burger Family closed, we switched to Hermes, which was sort of a Hardee's knock-off in a town that didn't have one of those either. Then, of course, I-20 came in, and we started taking that to Bishopville instead.
I am not absolutely sure this is the right building, but I have looked a number of times in Camden over the years, and this is the only one in about the right place, looking like it could have been there then, and have been a restaurant then, and which tickles vague memories. I could be wrong -- it was a *long* time ago.
Deli Say No More, 1616 Taylor Street: 2023 (Moved, Rebranded) 1 comment
I was driving Taylor this evening, and noticed that there seemed to be less signage than usual on Deli Say No More catty-corner (more or less) from The Township. Looking inside confirmed the interior largely stripped.
I didn't actually know the name of this place until I started googling around, which reveals that they have apparently re-named and re-branded and moved to Two Notch near Fontaine. The web site and phone number remain the same.
I had noticed the new business in the old Video Magic & Mags / Nancy's Nook building, but hadn't made the connection.
UPDATE 14 May 2024 -- The Two Notch location:
UPDATE 17 June 2025 -- As mentioned in the comments, to be a San Jose, Jr.:
Hungry Howie's, 6801 Saint Andrews Road Suite 15: 30 September 2023 1 comment
Aside from the Hungry Howie's in Myrtle Beach, this is the only other location for the chain that I was aware of. I'm not much for take-out, and of course it's all the way out in Irmo, so I never tried a Hungry Howe's pizza. Just from the web-site, it sounds like it could be pretty good: several of those crust flavors sound promising.
I am a little fuzzy on the details, and can't find anything online right now, but this location first came to my attention several years ago when the news broke that it had been sold to a rival chain. I don't know what happened, but obviously that deal never came to fruition, and operations continued for many years after that, until mid-September of this year, when it closed for repairs, a state which officially morphed into a permanent closure recently as reported on their Facebook page.
I notice that the store is not listed on the Quail Valley marquee. That seems pretty quick -- I wonder if it were ever there.

Tha River, 2344 Broad River Road: September 2023 no comments
It appears to me that Tha River, follow-on in this building to Pon Di River, has closed. There is no note on the door, but I stopped by on two consecutive weekends to find it not open during prime hours, and the second week, the portable sign advertising specials was gone from the parking lot. It also appeared to me that at least on the left side of the building, there were no tables inside.
I can't find a Facebook, but their web site is still up, and doesn't suggest any issues.
Waffle House, 491 Piney Grove Road: September 2023 (Open Again) 1 comment
Pretty much placeholder pictures, as I just did a drive-by when I should have stopped, but this Waffle House is apparently undergoing the same upfit as a number of other midlands locations. It should be back in a few months, still looking like a Waffle House...

Fatz Cafe, 212 Wall Street (Camden): 23 August 2023 2 comments
This was the Fatz location in Camden. As of 10 September 2023, there is still muzak playing on the patio (as was the case for the Florence location. This building is on a nice parcel very convenient to I-20, so I suspect something will move in before long.
Fatz Cafe, 2494 Church Street (Conway): 2019-ish 1 comment
Here's another former Fatz, this one on US-501 in Conway on the main drag towards the beach.
Google reviews suggest this was re-purposed as an Asian buffet sometime around 2019.
Fatz Cafe, 2007 West Lucas Street (Forence): 23 August 2023 3 comments
The Florence Fatz Cafe still has a billboard on I-95, and the music in the foyer is still playing, but like all the rest, this location is now history.
Apparently the Southern 500 had just been run, and I had a heck of a time getting out of here and back onto I-95!
Fatz Cafe, 942 East Main Street: 23 August 2023 8 comments
I don't suppose this is a big surprise: We have all noticed Fatz closing locations without adding any new ones, but still I was expecting it to take longer.
The news came last week that the whole chain has shut down, with some reports of bankruptcy filings, though no actual links to such.
This store in Lexington was the last Midlands location, and I had never eaten there, but I would drive by from time to time, and observe that it seemed to be doing a reasonable business. In fact, as I was taking these shots, several cars wandered in, looking for a meal.
It's a good sized building, and there are already an Asian buffet and a San Jose in the general area, so we'll have to see what happens next here.
Here are stories on the chain closing shop in The Index Journal, The State & The Greenville Sun.
