I tried the Philly Pretzel Factory on Rosewood shortly after it opened (it was fine), but was unaware of this location in the Publix plaza on Broad River Road. Judging from the Google reviews, this place opened in February 2020, possibly the worst time in the last 100 years to open a restaurant, and the door sign pegs the closing at 30 October.

Indian Wells Golf Club, 100 Woodlake Drive (Murrells Inlet): 22 December 2019   no comments

Posted at 11:32 pm in closing

Indian Wells Golf Club is on the Garden City Connector, a short cut-through that joins US-17 Business with US-17 Bypass just north of the former Pink Pony. As is usual for the Grand Strand, the area has developed quite a bit in the last decade, and there is now a Wal-Mart on the east end of the connector.

According to The Sun News, the plan is to replace the golf course with up to 520 houses and townhouses. This, understandably has upset the locals who already live by the course, who would see their green spaces replaced with houses and traffic, and there have been protests against the development plans.

The course was 36 holes, and opened in 1984 with Hole #9 named to the "Grand Strand's Dream 18". You can see some pictures of the course in manicured operation here. By the time I walked the course on 1 November 2020, I couldn't really tell where the holes had been (though I did find a sandtrap) as it had grown over very quickly during the year of closure.

It was a very pleasant outing though, as the cart paths are still there, and without golf, your "nice walk spoiled" is just a nice walk. There are a number of ducks and herons on the water, and I have seen folks out in canoes from time to time as well; the place is now an unofficial park, and I can see why the folks living behind it will miss it.

This little storefront across from the former Yesterday's on Santee Avenue has been a number of things over the years. Most recently, it was Sunrise Artisan Bath and Body, until they moved into the old Portfolio Art Gallery space on Saluda back in early 2019.

Here is The State story on that move.

This little shaved ice emporium is in the parking lot of The Ole Timey Meat Market in Irmo, and I'm not really sure when it closed, but I can't recall ever seeing anybody there -- though I certainly don't drive that stretch of road more than once or twice a week, if that. At any rate, I'm sure Pelican opening in the old Tony's Party Shop, can't have helped, and as that was in 2017, I'll put that in the post title.

SleepWorks, 9610 Two Notch Road Suite 7: 2020   1 comment

p1670310_tn.jpg

If I recall correctly, this little development, Sesqui Pointe, and the one next to it were the cause of considerable controversy as they were built on land bought from Sesqui State Park, something very unusual for a state park to do, and something which existing property owners did not expect at all when they located next to a state park.

SleepWorks (it appears to be one word with internal capitalization) is a chain which supports sleep disorder treatment. From their site it appears that there are still a number of locations in South Carolina and the Midlands. I'm not sure when this one closed, but since the branding is still up, and since this has been such a bad year for everyone, I'm going to guess "2020" in the post title.

Thunderbird Inn / Econo Lodge / Rodeway Inn, 773 Saint Andrews Road: Spring 2020   3 comments

I can't recall that I've ever stayed in a Rodeway Inn, the mental picture I have is of pretty basic accomdation, but this one, at least, had a pool on-site. This property started, I believe, as a Thunderbird Inn, a now nearly defunct chain with really cool signs. At some point thereafter, it was an Econo Lodge, as you can see in these pictures I took for the co-located Hilltop Restaurant closing.

Now, the Rodeway has closed, and they are doing asbestos abatement on the property, presumably in preparation to tear the whole place down. Google doesn't turn up any news stories, so I'm not sure what's next for this property.

When I finally got over to Forest Lake Park after commenter Sidney mentioned that the gym was being torn down, I found the whole place fenced off and closed. Presumably there is an upfit planned here, but oddly, I can find no mention of it on the Richland County Recreation Commission site. Elsewhere on the site there is a ten year plan for the system, but the only mention of the park there is that it is in "fair" condition and could be better. I don't see any news stories about it either.

I actually did not realize this was a park -- I thought it was all part of the adjacent elementary school. It looks to have been a pleasant enough place.

Also, for the record, I have used the term Forest Lake Park on this site before to talk about the park attached to the old Forest Lake Shopping Center, which is apparently technically incorrect.

I noticed the other evening that this florist, on Two Notch near Spring Valley Antique Mall was gone. I go to florists probably less than once a decade, and never went to this one, so there's not much I can say. I do find the name a bit curious, as it sounds more like a nursery than a flower shop.

Cover 3, 711 Harden Street, 31 August 2019   no comments

p1670190_tn.jpg

Sometimes I lose track of all the names a storefront in Five Points has had, and whether I have done a closing on it, but it appears I have never done one for any incarnation of 711 Harden Street.

Cover 3 was another one of the local bars caught up in the rule tightening last year, and decided to close when their permit ran out on 31 August rather than continue to contest the new restrictions. The Post & Courier has the story, along with a nice photo of Cover 3 in full operation. The State has basically the same story.

I note that the place has now been vacant for over a year, which to me argues that the city has allowed itself to be shot in the foot. Of course, once the pandemic hit, probably it was going to remain vacant for a while in any event.

UPDATE 8 February 2022 -- The State reports this is to be Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint and will open on 21 February 2022.

Nationwide Insurance / Alter Ego Hair Salon, 3810 Two Notch Road, Suite B: 2016-ish   no comments

I believe I first photographed this strip back in 2008 when Hollywood Video closed, and this unit was a Nationwide insurance office. Google suggests that at some point between then and now, it was
Alter Ego Hair Salon. Streetview for 2018 shows the slot already vacant, so doing a blue-sky guess (not confirmed by any phonebook) that that closed in the 2016 timeframe.
