Kotas Sandwiches, 5423-B Augusta Road: 2013 2 comments
This little sandwich shop is attached to a convenience store / gas station on the West side of US-1 heading into Lexington. I had driven past it a number of times in the previous months, but had never really seen it. This time, when I stopped at the store, I noticed that it was there, and that it was closed. What reviews I see online are positive, and indicate it was open at least into June of 2013.
Rec Warehouse, 2814 Augusta Road: 2013 4 comments
Commenter James points out that this recreational equipment and fixture store on US-1 near I-26 has closed. I have to admit that it was never on my radar screen as I can't imagine buying anything along those lines. I guess this was not a sentiment unique to me..

Super Suds Car Wash, 3150 Augusta Road: 2012 1 comment
This "No Longer A Car Wash" is on US-1 next to the Woodberry Plaza Wendy's.
Google StreetView shows it still in operation in 2011, but by sometime in 2012, the suds had blown away..
Family Dollar, 3234 Augusta Road: 2013 (moved) 3 comments
Woodberry Plaza is on US-1 West of I-26 and East of the Flea Market. I believe the last time it figured here was a mention for the old Winn-Dixie. Family Dollar was to the left of that store, and appears to have closed sometime in 2013 (or, at least it is still listed in the February 2013 phonebook).
There seems to have been a good bit of activity in this general type of store lately, with Dollar General making a big push, and Fred's largely giving up.
UPDATE: Commenter Andrew remarks that this store relocated, so I have added "moved" to the post title.
The Wild Hare Sports Cafe, 5474 Augusta Rd: 6 January 2014 9 comments
Based on the available evidence, it appears to me that Monday 6 January was the last day of operation for the Lexington Wild Hare, on US-1 north of I-20. This closing leaves the chain with two restaurants: one in the Vista and one on the Western segment of Bush River Road near the former Irmo Kmart.

Taco Cid / San Jose Restaurante Mexicano, 604 Columbia Avenue: 2007 (Moved) 7 comments
Here's an interesting little restaurant building in Lexington. It was last a San Jose until that operation relocated to 115 North Point Drive, but the building obviously predates that. It has a familiar look, but I can't quite place it. I would say the front extension was not part of the original building.
The building looks a bit forlorn now, but the murals are a nice touch.
UPDATE 22 April 2013: Added Taco Cid to the post title based on the comments and the 1985 phonebook.
UPDATE 29 NOvember 2017 -- as mentioned elsewhere by commenter ED, this building has now been razed:
UPDATE 30 August 2022: Updating tags and adding map icon.
UPDATE 25 January 2023: Add tag.
Taco Bell, 515 West Main Street (Lexington): 4 April 2011 (moved) 10 comments
As mentioned in the comments on the Lexington Blockbuster this adjacent old-school Taco Bell moved to a new store a couple of years ago. Personally I like these Southwestern style locations more than the "modern" style they have adopted recently. Several in Columbia have been repurposed recently (though the one on Knox Abbott is still vacant), but this one looks as though it may be too far gone for that.
UPDATE -- Work is underway:

Blockbuster Video, 509 West Main Street (Lexington): March 2013 10 comments
Well, this has already been talked about enough that I'm not sure who the hat-tip goes to, but I finally got over to Lexington last weekend and got some shots of the Main Street Blockbuster closing down. It was already pretty near the end-days, and as I watched, I saw a guy walk out and hoick a set of display racks into his truck.
I was also in Aiken this week, and the Blockbuster there which closed about this time last year is still vacant despite being in a pretty good spot..
UPDATE -- the place is still vacant:
UPDATE 4 March 2014 -- This shot is through a windshield and from too far away, but you can see this building is now a Pet Supermarket:
UPDATE 5 October 2020: Changing name in post title from "Blockbuster" to "Blockbuster Video", updating tags, adding map icon.
Chiva Auto Sales, 1040 Meeting Street: 2012 no comments
I already did a closing on this building on Meeting Street in West Columbia near Triangle City for when it was Bell's Hamburger Drive-In, but I noticed a while ago that the follow on operation (which was not the immediate follow-on!) Chiva Auto Sales is now gone as well.
That gave me a chance to get some more shots of this place, without all the cars parked outside, and the guy wondering what the heck I was doing sitting inside. However, the place is tightly fenced off now, so I still can't get any close shots through the building windows. It will be a shame if the next owners tear down the building and marquee which absolutely scream of a certain era, but I can't imagine it being suited to much other than used-car office these days..
UPDATE 3 December 2014 -- This building has now been razed. See the pictures at the Bell's Hamburger Drive-In closing.
Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC), 4439 Augusta Road: Summer 2012 7 comments
I had a hard time finding this Kentucky Fried Chicken in the phonebook because they actually still listed as "Kentucky Fried Chicken" rather than KFC. Good for them! (Interestingly, other KFCs are listed some at the front of the 'K' section with the acronyms and others alphabetically after the "KE" businesses..).
Anyway, they are definitely listed in this year's (February 2012) phonebook, and I'm guessing from commenter Brandi's heads-up that they probably closed very recently. Certainly, as you can see, the store has yet to be stripped of all the equipment and fixtures, and the place doesn't yet seem to be listed as for sale.
