J. B. White / Belk, 3400 Forest Drive: 6 September 2023 12 comments
I remember growing up, when this store was White's, the book department at the top of the escalator was one of my favorite places to browse as they would usually have a selection of Tom Swift, Jr books as well as random other interesting tomes. The escalator itself was cool because it was so narrow that you could grab each handrail and hoist yourself off your feet while you made the trip, all the while listening to the floor-caller making coded announcements like Five Nine, Five Nine!.
When they knocked the original Richland Mall down, they skipped this building, and it stayed on as White's until the chain went under, or was bought out -- I forget which.
After that, it became Belk, but honestly, this store has been getting ready to close for the past five years or so. It seemed as though every time I went inside, the place had been more hollowed out and threadbare. It started most notably on the second floor, especially after the doors to the far side of the mall were permanently closed and gradually continued up there until finally the escalator was shut down and the whole floor closed off. This is basically the path the Dutch Square store walked down. I can still recall how spooky it was to go up to the men's room there after the rest of the floor had been vacated.
Ahthough I haven't been in since the closing was announced, things were looking pretty sparse on the ground floor as well, the last time I went by. I'll try to get some inside pictures at some point during the process.
Here are stories on the closing from The State, WLTX, and The Post & Courier.

UPDATE 6 September 2023: Commenter Andrew notes that the place closed today, so I am updating the post title to note that.
Le Clos, 20 South 2nd Street (Fernandina Beach): 10 April 2023 no comments
Le Clos was a little French restaurant in a 1906 cottage just across the street from the Hampton Inn in Fernandina Beach's historic waterfront district. I'm not a big French cuisine fan (at least for main dishes), but the pasta looked very good, so I stopped by one night and can verify it was excellent, along with (as you would expect) great bread, and a fantastic creme brulee.
I was surprised then on my most recent visit to see the place with the sign down and stripped internally. At first the story seemed rather clear-cut as described here: The owner decided to close the place, although she was able to place the staff at other local spots. A thread on TripAdvisor suggests a more confusing story, as does the cafe's web site which suggests it may re-open this fall.
Whatever comes next, it appears the building will need some work.
Ricky's Tire & Auto Center, 1534 Sunset Boulevard: July 2023 2 comments
I don't know much about Ricky's Tire & Auto, but they seem to been a well regarded shop and closed last month after struggling with first COVID and then the economy for a while.
Commenter Andrew sends this ColaDaily link which has much more information, including a video report.

Tasty Express, 1684 North Main Street (Summerville): 2022 1 comment
I was in Summerville recently, and noticed this old-school ice cream and fast food drive-through & walk-up on the main drag. It's the kind of place you don't see too much anymore, and apparently was well regarded locally (though more recent reviews mention some slippage). As far as I can tell, they closed sometime in 2022 after February. If you look at the Yelp reviews, you can see that they used to have a nice patio out back.
I'm not exactly sure what the Lodi branding was about.
1616 Gervais / Havens Framemakers & Gallery, 1616 Gervais Street: Summer 2023 (Moved) no comments
Eggs Up Grill, 2930 Devine Street: 24 July 2023 (Open Again) no comments
I have been aware of Eggs Up Grill since they opened their first location in Litchfield Beach, in a side-room of Latte Litchfield. Somehow in all those years, I've never managed to stop by a location. This is mostly down to my not being a breakfast person at all, and the fact that they close relatively early in the day. I'll get to it eventually.
As I recall, this location was their first one in Columbia, and in fact, their first one off the Grand Strand. I still think of it as being fairly new, but it's actually been here a good few years now, and it is currently closed while they remodel. I didn't see any proposed opening date posted anywhere, but looking inside, they still have a good ways to go.
UPDATE 3 October 2023 -- Open again:
La Cazuela Tex-Mex Buffet, 3920 Platt Springs Road: July 2023 4 comments
I was not really aware of La Cazeula, driving that section of road very infrequently, though I must have seen it a number of times.
It appears to have been a largely lunch oriented buffet operation, which will be replaced by another Mexican restaurant soon.

Aiken Brewing Company, 140 Laurens Street Southwest (Aiken): 17 March 2023 3 comments
Well, it's the summer doldrums, so posting has been light, and will continue so for a while, but here's a bit from out of town.
When I lived in Aiken, I worked in Augusta, so I ended up eating supper over there more often than not, but I certainly did eat at the Aiken Brewing Company a number of times over the years. They had a decent burger, and while I'm no beer connoisseur, I thought the porter or stout was pretty good. I guess I last ate there sometime in the fall of 2022, when it was still pleasant to sit outside on the sidewalk. When I went back recently, I found that the place was closed, and this story indicates that the owner was retiring. More recently, this story says a new restaurant will be locating there at the end of summer, but I did not see any indication of ongoing work, which seems a bit odd.
Heroes Convention 2023, Charlotte Convention Center (Charlotte): 17 June 2023 no comments
Looking at the Alphabetical Closings, I see I did not do a post for the 2022 Heroes Convention, though I'm sure I went, as I did last month.
The older I get, the harder it is to get up to Charlotte at a reasonable time, so by the time I got to the convention center, I really only had time to walk the convention floor without attending any panels or events. In fact, I didn't really have time to do the whole floor as well as I wanted to. I tried to make a plan to sweep back and forth and hit every booth, but as I got to the final stages, they called time on the day's session.
My impression is that it was not as crowded as it has been in some past years (not counting the Holiday Inn on Woodlawn years!), and there were somewhat fewer elaborate cosplay attendees.
I'm pretty disconnected from the current era of comics, but I always make it a point to pick up something from the writers & artists who put themselves out there. I got a YA indie novel for my niece, which she won't read, I'm sure, and the below swag which hopefully I will.
Jenny Craig, 4600 Forest Drive Suite 2: May 2023 1 comment
It looks like there are some issues, dating to May at this Forest Drive diet center. Since the posted date has passed, and the office is still there, things may be in the process of resolution, but for now at least they remain closed, and google has marked it as permanent.
