Freesia Buffet, 3071 Longtown Commons Drive: January 2020 1 comment
There are a lot of Asian buffets in the DC area, and I used to end up there with the local staff whenever I was visiting the DC office. Frankly, I never cared for it, so I have not tried any of the various Asian buffets in the Columbia area, and was not aware this one existed until commenter Sidney reported it closed.
I will say it's a good looking building, though a bit hard to get to if you are heading toward Sandhill. This area certainly has changed a lot in the past few years, and there's no sign of that stopping.
I note that the door sign directs customers to the Magnolia Buffet in the old Ryan's on Two Notch, so I guess that has the same ownership.

Dairy Queen, 462540 State Road 200 Yulee Florida: Fall 2017 4 comments
I noticed on my last trip to Fernandina, that this old-school Dairy Queen on historic Florida Route A1A, just off of I-95 in Yulee Florida was closed. (You can see it, poorly, in operation in the first shot).
If I had to guess a cause, it would be the interminable road construction on this stretch of A1A, which has made this parking lot almost inaccessible, especially if west bound. Of course the walk-up design has its drawbacks as well: One review advises eating in your car to avoid the no-see-ums.
For now the nearby produce & souvenir stand is holding on despite the acess problems. I would be sad to see that go, as it has been there forever, and always has good citrus & candies.

Albert's Deli, 7358 Parklane Road: 14 February 2020 1 comment
Back in the day:
I did a closing for this building when I referenced that it had at one time been Andy's Deli. I ate there once that I can recall, and while it was OK, it was never going to be one of my regular stops. The current owner is not "Albert", but Adrianne Davidson, and according to this ColaDaily article, she has decided to sell the building and concentrate on catering from the 1901 Main Street location, which I was not aware of.

Sandy's Famous Hot Dogs, 5175 Sunset Boulevard Suite 13: 31 December 2019 3 comments
This Sandy's was in Lexington in the same plaza as McAlister's Deli. I never ate at this one -- If I'm going to drive out to this area to eat, it's probably Uno.
Here again is a story on the owner's retirement.
I believe I have now covered all of the Sandy's locations that were open until the end. As I recall, there was a location on Parklane once, maybe I'll try to find that building someday.
The Peanut Man, 481 Town Center Place Suite 3: Fall 2018 (Consolidated) 1 comment
I was looking for some spicy peanuts for an upcoming gathering, and decided to stop by The Peanut Man at Sandhill. In the event, I found it gone.
A little digging established that they have closed their Sandhill and downtown stores, and have consolidated into a new space on Fernandina Road, in the old Prestige Appliance location. In fact, I had seen the banner for Chocolate Factory & Coffee Shoppe from the Interstate, but I did not realize it was The Peanut Man. The new spot is a restaurant as well as a sweet & nut shop, serving a breakfast & lunch menu:
Here is a State article on starting the new location, and here is one about closing the downtown location to focus on this spot.
Fuddruckers, 1801 Bush River Road: 6 February 2020 19 comments
Well, I am saddened by this one, but not surprised. I have been going to Fuddruckers for many years, and it has been obvious over the last several that there was minimal money for anything more than basic upkeep on the store. There was never a real update to the fixtures, and certain booths would break and never be fully repaired. Starting perhaps ten years ago, the hours dropped off a bit, one side of the burger condiment bar was retired, and the patio was basically abandoned.
Still I stopped in every six weeks or so because I did enjoy the burgers (and the buns!). I noticed that over the years the same faces would be there month after month -- something that is pretty uncommon in the restaurant business these days. The story in Cola Daily makes the point that the manager had been there since the store opened.
As I said, I have gone many times over they years, but some people take it to another level. The Fuddruckers model is you place your order at the register, take your drink, sit down, and then come back to the counter when your name is called. Last year I heard: "Bob, your 25th anniversary dinner is ready!"
This was Columbia's only Fuddruckers. There are at least two on the coast, and apparently several in the upstate.

UPDATE 17 June 2020 -- This place has now been sold, and construction is starting. Commenter
Mike Dodds says a church as bought the property:
Saffron, 1607 Fairlane Drive: Early 2020 2 comments
I never ate at Saffron, but their mix of cuisines (Indian, Chinese & Mexican) intrigued me. I figure there was a family story in there somewhere. Yelp reviews indicate that the place changed hands last year, and you can see on the marquee sign, that the Mexican aspect has been elided.
Now the place has closed, and the follow-on will be a (fully) Mexican restaurant: La Cienega.
Hardee's, 7019 Parklane Road: January 2020 7 comments
It seems to me I have blogged an unusual number of Hardee's closings recently. I'm not sure if that says anything or if it's just coincidence or local conditions, but here's another.
This store is on Parklane, basically in a Columbia Mall outparcel, and not too far down from the local McDonald's. I'm not sure how long it was in this location, but it's been at least since the mid-90s. I do like this google review for the place:
Once got a burger that looked just as good in the ads.
That *shouldn't* be high praise, and yet..
Are there any Red Burrito locations of Hardee's left in Columbia?

Sandy's Famous Hot Dogs, 612 Saint Andrews Road Suite 17: December 2019 1 comment
This was where I had my last Sandy dog, some time in the summer of 2019. It was good, and I remember thinking I should do that more often, but in the event never did.
Casa Linda, 285 Columbiana Drive Suite A: 31 December 2019 2 comments
Casa Linda in Forest Acres is one of my go-to places, but I don't think I've ever eaten at any of the other locations. I have eaten in this *building*, back when it was a D's Wings. Casa Linda set up shop there probably around 2013, and lasted until the end of 2019.
Actually commenter Heath mentions that this closing was more like a tidy ownership change, with El Patron quickly setting up there after year's end.
I'll note that the plaza marquee still touts the comics shop that closed in 2017.
