Bennigan's, 3955 West New Haven Avenue (Melbourne FL): February 2023 1 comment
Bennigan's never came to Columbia, but were pretty big elsewhere in the 1980s. I remember that when I was living in Fayetteville, it was a standard place to unwind when the out-of-town crew was visiting to help us set up for field exercises. After that the chain kind of lost its way, and ended up going bankrupt in 2008 which drastically reduced the number of locations.
Nonetheless, things survive & thrive in Florida when they don't elsewhere, and this Melbourne location, on US-192 just East of I-95 opened on 28 January 2016. I always meant to drop in and see if it was as I remembered, but always had some place I would rather eat with my limited time in the area. However this guy did and was a bit underwhelmed.
At any rate the place gave up the ghost in February of 2023, and is now a Mexican eatery, Agave D'Oro. I'm pretty sure I have a picture of it in operation somewhere, and if I find it I'll add it up top.
Greedy Rascals, 655 Saint Andrews Road: Early 2024 3 comments
Greedy Rascals hot-dogs was the follow-on operation in this spot to Tripp's Fine Cleaners. There was also a location on Rosewood which closed before this one did. I'm not sure about the exact closing date, but the google reviews suggest it was around March of 2024.
I'm also not sure of the exact status of the chain. This Facebook page suggests they are opening a location on Airport Boulevard, but I can't quite make out the details from the information there.
UPDATE 12 August 2024: Changed the closing date from "Spring 2024" to "Early 2024" based on commenter Gypsie's input.
Hooters, 7711 Two Notch Road: 23 June 2024 3 comments
As predicted by commenter Mall Guy, this Hooters is gone.
I had been in a number of times over the years. They were open later than many other places, the food was competent, and, of course, the view was nice.
I did get the impression the last couple of times I was there that it was going downhill a bit, and the food was somewhat sub-par compared to times past. It's probably been at least two years since my last visit, so I can't say how it was at the end.
This building started out as a Hops brewpub, so we'll see where the chain of restaurant reincarnation takes it next. I would guess that there are competing Asian buffet places too close, so perhaps a Mexican venue as the nearest ones I can think of are on the small side.

Sub Station II, 7101 Parklane Road: February 2024 (Branding) 9 comments
It looks like the Sub Station II on Parklane has disaffiliated from the chain and struck out on their own as Leo's Deli.
As nearly as I can tell from looking at the google reviews, this happened sometime around February 2024.
Zesto, 1250 Chapin Road: 3 May 2024 1 comment
The wonder of Zesto is not that one closed, but that any are still open: Each location is like a step into 50 years ago, and we are lucky to still have such portals.
That said, this location, in Chapin is actually fairly new as such things go, having opened "only" 18 years ago. As for the reasons this one closed, WIS quotes the owner:
It’s just time for me to have a normal life. Same struggles as all mom-and-pop [stores]. Can’t get decent employees, food cost, etc. Times are changing.
There is also a State story here.

Schlotzsky's, 1305 Knox Abbott Drive: May 2024 2 comments
This Schlotzsky's looks less "closed" than the Dutch Square location, especially given that they still have their parking lot placards out, but still, given what happened there, I would be surprised to see it open again.

Eastern Buffet, 5424 Forest Drive Suite 122: February 2024 no comments
I was at East Forest Plaza this evening, and noticed a construction bin in front of Eastern Buffet. Looking online, it appears to have been closed since sometime around February. Apparently there is something happening to the property, at the least all the benches have been pulled out, but to what end is not yet apparent.
Schlotzsky's, 529 Bush River Road: May 2024 10 comments
When Schlotzsky's was on Parklane I made it a point to eat lunch there once a week. It wasn't that the veggie sandwich was that good in and of itself (it was ok), but the fact that I really liked the sourdough buns, which were always a nice change from other sandwich places.
When that location closed, I noticed that some of the staff had made it to this location abuting Dutch Square, on the corner of Bush River & North Arrowwood Roads. In the event given how far it was from home, this location never made it into my regular rotation, and I probably only ate there a half dozen times over the last ten years. I liked the fact that they had a Cinnabon concession, though I think I only partook once.
Driving by lately, I had noticed that the Cinnabon part of the sign looked to have been painted over, and recent reviews suggest the place was having other problems, but it's still a shame to see them go (though Google marks the closing as temporary, so we'll see).
Looking at the other closings for the chain, it appears that at some point they dropped the word "Deli" from their name, something I just noticed.

UPDATE 16 September 2024 -- The Schlotzsky's branding is down, and the place is prepping to become Wings Co.:
Poogan's Southern Kitchen: 4605 Forest Drive Suite 1: 19 May 2024 3 comments
This is another place I always meant to get to, and I really have no excuse as it is exactly in my area, and I had seen early-on that it had exhibited Sign #1 that it probably wouldn't last too long. In the event however I did not, and if I ever catch them, it will have to be in a Low Country location.
Commenter Jimmy provides their closing message:

Amora / The Retreat: 5122 Bush River Road: 2024 3 comments
This is one of those places that I was never sure if it were still open or not. It certainly appeared not, but there are reviews up until a few months ago.
At any rate, it appears to be closed now, joining a long line of former restaurants in this building on the spur of Bush River Road sometimes known as Old Bush River Road.
