Orvis, 702 Cross Hill Road Suite 400-B: November 2025 1 comment
Orvis was founded in 1856, and impinged very infrequently on my attention over the last 170 years. I had the vague idea it was some sort of L. L. Bean thing, (apparently there was more fishing involved than I expected) and totally missed that fact that a store had opened in Cross Hill Market, taking the place of PlantHouse which closed in March 2024.
Here are State stories on the store announcement, and the store opening. There doesn't yet seem to be on on the closing. The chain announced the grand opening on their Facebook just shy of a year ago.
The closing doesn't really have anything to do with Columbia as a market. The chain is in big trouble and is closing about half their stores (for now).
The "November" closing date is just a guess, given that we are more than half-way through October and the closing sale has already started.

Tic Toc Candy Shop / Get Your Gear On / Sunrise Artisan Bath and Body, 730 Santee Avenue: 2019 (Moved) no comments
This little storefront across from the former Yesterday's on Santee Avenue has been a number of things over the years. Most recently, it was Sunrise Artisan Bath and Body, until they moved into the old Portfolio Art Gallery space on Saluda back in early 2019.
Here is The State story on that move.
Catch & Release, 906 Axtell Drive: Summer 2020 1 comment
I wasn't aware of this sportsman's gun & thrift store in the old Gamecock Theater, but judging by the pictures on Yelp, it was an interesting place. Looking at the most recent google reviews, it appears they closed down towards the end of July.
I was in this place, once, when it was Resale Revue, and it was obvious that the big room had been a theater, what with the sloping floor and all. I expect that limits the kind of business that can move in without major work.

The Backpacker, 1215 Wayne Street: March 2019 6 comments
It seems to me that at one time, The Backpacker was on Rosewood. I have some memory of buying some dehydrated hamburgers there before a Scout camping trip. Either the owner or someone who had charge of the branded van also lived down the street for a number of years, but I don't recall specifically ever meeting them.
I am generally of the opinion that we invented civilization so as to not spend a lot of time out in the woods without a roof overhead, but to each his own, and there are some avid campers in the family (though not in the Columbia branch). At any rate, I liked the idea that if I ever had to rough it again, I knew where to go.
The State has the story, and the history of the store, which dates back to 1973.

West Marine, 421 Bush River Road: January 2018 (moved) 4 comments
As reported in The State as the plan was announced, West Marine, has moved from Dutch Square to Columbiana Station.
I have not yet gotten a picture of the new location, but here is the company announcement of the opening and ribbon cutting at the new store on 19 March 2018.
