Shoney's, 2208 Airport Boulevard Suite B: Late July 2025 4 comments
To the best of my memory, I never ate at this Shoney's. Our go-to was always the Two Notch location where I had many a plate of spaghetti and hot-fudge cakes.
The chain struggled after dropping the Big Boy branding, and dug themselves further into a hole with a disasterous side-trip into the hotel business. (Does anyone know if they ever owned any of the nearby Airport Boulevard motels?).
This building is their original 1970s style and has probably been around at least that long. The newer stores such as Manning & Aiken have a completely different look. That store (Aiken) may have actually closed as well, as the Post & Courier story on the closing lists only Myrtle Beach, Sumter, Manning, Hartsville & Florence as the remaining South Carolina locations.
So what next? Mexican, or Asian buffett?

I looked at the Shoney's website this morning out of curiosity as to see how many were left nationwide and they still had this one listed as open. They also had a link to "12 Reasons to be a Shoney's Franchise Partner." A Google search said there were only 38 left. At its peak in 1998 there were about 1800 in 34 states.

The Orangeburg location of Shoneys just closed a few months back as well.

Shoot - I will miss the breakfast buffet. The steak fingers (probably left over from dinner) and French toast sticks were yummy!

Mexican? Asian buffet? Ted, you're not "dreaming big enough".
My money is on student housing. They'll buy the whole area. Never doubt the avarice of The University.
If not that then almost certainly another Mexican joint.
