Carolina Paws, 4839 Forest Drive: 1 May 2012 (moved) 6 comments
Carolina Paws pet grooming shared the old Dobbs House building with Forest Lake Spirits until moving to 1647 Budon Court in early May of 2012.
I thought I would take this opportunity to mention not only that move, but the ongoing work in the old building. There has been a dumpster out front for several weeks, and the permits arrayed on the door indicate that the place is being upfitted for a new restaurant (or at least, I can think of no other reason for a "hood' to be installed).
UPDATE 10 April 2013 -- Well, it's official -- The Schiano's sign is up:
Gas Station / RB Marine Service, 1800 State Street: 2000s(?) 3 comments
The only real google hit I'm getting for this is RB Marine Service, but it's obvious that this little building at the corner of State & Poplar Streets in Cayce was originally a gas station of some sort. Judging from the general look of the building, I would probably put it in the 1950s, and I'm sure it was full service and the guy would check your battery and tires while the gas was pumping..
I suspect that in the years between then, and whenever RB moved in, it was good number of other things. There's some sort of label scar on the awning, but nothing I can read.
State Farm / Ca$sh Advance, 1205 Broad River Road: 2012 no comments
Here's yet another cash advance/check cashing operation that's closed up shop. This one is on Broad River Road about midway between Bush River Road and the Food Lion. I think there's a logical construction called a "Tautology" that probably fits here: There's not much money in people who don't have much money.
If you look closely at the awning (click-through), you can see the old State Farm banner and logo labelscar.
Exit Real Estate Service, 1421 Broad River Road: 2012 1 comment
This real estate office was almost at the intersection of Broad & Bush River Roads just past Boozer Shopping Center.
As I found taking these pictures, it's a bit of a hard spot to get into and out of, with a pretty steep parking lot (I bottomed-out coming out of there) and lots of traffic to turn across if you're coming from the Graystone side. I suspect the real estate market had more to do with this closing than the parking lot though.
Car Wash, 3307 Broad River Road: 2000s (open again) 2 comments
I don't know much about this self-service car wash in between Widewater Square and Nancy's Nook other than it has seen better days (the LoopNet listing marks it as "distressed" and as an "office building").
The interesting thing is that although I must have driven past it dozens if not hundreds of times before, I can honestly say that when I saw it the other day, I had no memory whatsoever of ever having seen it before.
I've never really seen the point of this kind of wash. Just spend the extra $3.00 and drive through one with the foam and buffer.
UPDATE 23 November 2016 -- Someone has rehabilitated this wash, and it is now open again:
Coin Laundry, 1932 Dunbar Road: mid-2000s 3 comments
This old laundromat is across the street (Dunbar Road) from Frink Street's Town & Country plaza, and looks to have been vacant for a good while.
City Feet says it was built in 1970. To me it looks a little earlier. These places always had a certain smell, and a certain look, with the soap dispenser machine with its metal levers and slots, the hard plastic bucket chairs welded to a rail, and the plastic high folding tables. And of course, the whish-whish sounds of the washing machine agitators and the clinks of metal buttons each time the jeans got to the top of the dryer drum and fell down again..
UPDATE 14 December 2012: Updated the closing date from "1980s" to "mid-2000s" based on the comments.
PAL Travel, 2301 Beltline Boulevard: 2012 (consolidated) 1 comment
According to their phone ad, PAL Travel has been around since 1976. Since this year's phonebook came out (February 2012), they have elected to consolidate with the AAA Folks at 4526 Forest Drive. You may recall that address as it was very nearly totally destroyed by fire a while back, the results of which you can see at the link.
It's been open again for a while now and all is well:
Maunz Electronics, 931 Sunset Boulevard: 12 October 2012 14 comments
I've noticed Maunz Electronics off and on over the years as I drove down Sunset. The building has some nice retro touches (which may have been current when it was built), and it would catch my eye, as would the strong blue of the roadside sign.
The notices on the door list 12 October 2012 as the last day here, with the nice touch of referring people to another local business for future work.

San Jose Foods Inc Distribution & Warehouse, 1160 1st Street South Extension: 2010s no comments
Given that the San Jose Mexican restaurants are still around, I suspect their supply operation has moved rather than closed, but I noticed this warehouse for sale in an industrial park off of Bluff Road the other day (the park is where you see that huge flag flying on the side of I-77).
All American Title Loans, Inc., 7304-A Two Notch Road: late 2000s 1 comment
Well, it's back today to the trailer strip-mall on Two Notch across from the K-Mart.
I'm pretty sure this trailer was a number of things over the years, but the one sure hit I'm currently pulling up is for All American Title Loans, Inc..
According to these public notices from 2005 it was definitely still in business then, and I think it lasted a number of years after that, but I'm away from my old phonebooks right now, so I'll just put the closing date as "late 2000s".
