Express Check Advance 2700 Broad River Rd #70: Spring 2013 no comments
Here's yet another closed payday checking type operation. This one is in the plaza at the corner of Broad River & Rushmore Roads, across the street from Rush's. The plaza opened with some fanfare years ago, including the unlikely peregrination of Bum's Bummers from Boardwalk Plaza to here. In fact, if you look at the next to last picture at that link, I believe it is this very unit being constructed.
In recent years, the place seems to have moved down a tier, and to have had a fair bit of turnover.
Blockbuster Video, 2419 Broad River Road: 24 March 2013 16 comments
I've done so many closings on Blockbusters that it's hard to believe there are still some around. It's kind of like finding one of those prehistoric fish that get dredged up every now and then. This one is on Broad River Road near the old G-E-X, and is already having their final clearance sale. It's amazing how far and how quickly a company which once had naming rights to everything and thought they were the future of entertainment has fallen..

UPDATE 8 April 2013 -- As reported by commenter Andrew below, this place closed on 24 March, and the signs are down:
UPDATE 9 April 2014 -- Now a Buddy's Home Furnishings:
UPDATE 5 October 2020: Updating post tags, changing name in post title from "Blockbuster" to "Blockbuster Video", adding map icon.
Tainos, 4545 Broad River Road: November 2012 9 comments
Tainos was a Caribbean restaurant in a Broad River Road building perhaps most notable for having been the original Lizard's Thicket. It's certainly been quite a number of things since then, though Tainos seems to have brought lizards back to the building.
The story told by the door notices is rather distressing, though of course it is told from the restaurant's point of view. Certainly it seems to have been a nasty surprise.

Car Wash, 3307 Broad River Road: 2000s (open again) 2 comments
I don't know much about this self-service car wash in between Widewater Square and Nancy's Nook other than it has seen better days (the LoopNet listing marks it as "distressed" and as an "office building").
The interesting thing is that although I must have driven past it dozens if not hundreds of times before, I can honestly say that when I saw it the other day, I had no memory whatsoever of ever having seen it before.
I've never really seen the point of this kind of wash. Just spend the extra $3.00 and drive through one with the foam and buffer.
UPDATE 23 November 2016 -- Someone has rehabilitated this wash, and it is now open again:
Bel-Air Barber Shop, 1617 Broad River Road: Early 2012 10 comments
Commenter ED points out that the Bel-Air Barber Shop, a Boozer Shopping Center institution, has closed after 40 years. The old style places certainly seem to be closing faster than new ones are springing up. And of course it's depressing to note as well that if this place was 40 years old -- it is a lot *newer* than the places I started getting my hair cut..

The UPS Store, 1013-F Broad River Road: July 2011 4 comments
This little storefront in the Food Lion plaza between Greystone and Brevard, was a UPS Store. This review says that they were having problems for a while, and I wonder if that suggests that the copier which appears to still be in there was unfixable.
I believe that a contract Post Office opened fairly recently at Boozer Shopping Center, so there are still shipping resources in the general area.

UPDATE 9 September 2013 -- It's now Peking Wok II:
Little Pigs Too Barbeque, 11210 Broad River Road: December 2011 2 comments
Once upon a time, this building was The Whale's Tail and then Rubino's Italian Restaurant. More recently it has been the second location for Alpine Road's Little Pigs Barbeque -- in fact, after the Alpine Road store caught fire, and before it was repaired, this was the flagship location, though it's hard to imagine a place further away from Alpine Road but still "in the Columbia area".
The building does not seem to be up for sale, and is still furnished, so perhaps the owners have plans to re-open, or open a different restaurant here.

UPDATE 17 June 2013 -- Cletus' Roadside Grille is now operating in this building (and has been for a while):
Circle K, 2624 Broad River Road: 2008 8 comments
I don't have any feelings for or against Circle K. I'm glad to stop at one if I need gas or an Interstate "comfort" break, but I don't seek them out. I'd always imagined they were pretty stable businesses though -- people are always going to need gas, restrooms and snacks, so I was a bit surprised to see that this one, on Broad River Road next to Rush's and across the street from the defunct AMF Bowling Center had gone under.
On the other hand, Broad River Road near I-20 isn't doing great in general what with the bowling center gone, Intersection Center (virtually) gone, Dutch Square a shadow of its former self, Pizza Hut gone, Hooters gone etc.
UPDATE 21 December 2011 -- Here are some pictures from 23 October 2011 as work on getting the tanks out and stripping the canopy begins:
UPDATE 4 April 2012 -- The new canopy is complete, and as commenter Andrew mentions, "El Cheapo" gas pumps have been installed. There is obviously a good bit of work left to do, but apparently it it will be an El Cheapo:
UPDATE 24 August 2012 -- El Cheapo is open (and has been for a while):
UPDATE 23 March 2023: Updating tags, adding map icon.
Maggie Mae's Restaurant, 129 Rolling Meadows Lane: 2008 (Closed Again) 2 comments
I used to see this place whenever I was driving down I-26 to Charleston and wonder what it would be like. My guess was that it was a no-nonsense meat & 3 for hungry travellers, but I'll never know for sure now. If I had to speculate, I'd say it wasn't far enough out of town anymore and that traffic was now stopping at national chains before getting this far. (It's just a few miles up I-26 to Harbison or up I-77 to Two Notch). From all the work being done inside though, it looks like something wil set up in the building.
UPDATE 9 June 2009: Well, something did set up there -- Maggie Mae's! Looks like they're open again.
UPDATE 6 Nov 2010 -- Closed again:
UPDATE 11 November 2011: Found an extra interior picture and added it above.
UPDATE 24 January 2024: Adding tags and map icon, and putting the full street address in the post title.
