Coburg Dairy / Borden Dairy Company of South Carolina, 3020 Bluff Road: 2022 20 comments
I worked in this area for a while, and used to wonder exactly what this Borden facility did. LoopNet says it was a
Former cold storage distribution hub and vehicle maintenance facility.
You can also tell by looking at the pictures on the LoopNet listing, that the place used to be owned by Coburg Dairy. That was one of our main milk brands growing up (after Edisto) and I hadn't really realized they were gone, but apparently Borden bought them out in 2011. Borden is also cutting back in Charleston, but the Coburg Cow remains safe for now.

Days Inn & Suites, 7300 Garners Ferry Road: Spring 2023 (Closed for renovations) 2 comments
This Days Inn is probably most notable for being one of the few places in the area with an indoor pool. That aside, the place has apparently been badly in need of a refit for years now -- something it is currently getting.
Ms. B's Southern Soul Food, 676 Saint Andrews Road: Spring 2023 2 comments
For a long time, it was not clear if this restaurant was closing or not. I believe they were trying to direct traffic to their other location, in the old Ruby Tuesday building at Dutch Square, but were keeping this one, in a former Wendy's, open too for a while.
In the event, it is now definitely closed, and for sale, and you should head to Bush River Road for your down-home fix.

Tuesday Morning, 10225 Ocean Hwy Suite 400 (Pawleys Island): June 2023 1 comment
For many years Pawleys Island Plaza was kind of down-at-the-heels strip mall. There was an off brand grocery store that failed after a year or so (Farmer John's?), a small local office supply store, a barber shop, coin laundry and dry cleaner. For a few years the Post Office did operate there in between leaving their original photomat sized building and building the current location across from the Hammock Shops, but on the whole not a lot was going on there.
Things have changed a good bit in recent years as the whole area has gone upscale, and the plaza got a Publix, Dunkin, Smoothie King, Petco, and of course, Tuesday Morning. I went in there a number of times over the years, looking for lampshades and the like, and it was fine, like outlets of the chain everywhere. And like all of those, it is now closing (and may be closed by this time).
We'll have to see what's next. I see the plaza operators have gyms in some of their other properties -- that might work.
A+ Car Rentals, 9219 Two Notch Road: Spring 2023 (Moved) 1 comment
This was the follow-on operation in this building to SCU State Credit Union, and was here about two years, I think.
I believe their door sign says they have moved, but I was not able to get out to take a look at it as another car unexpectedly came around the building going the wrong direction, and I had to move out of the way.
A1A Insurance, 7234 Garners Ferry Road: 2023 (Rebranded/Moved) no comments
I've wondered about this place over they years, and a couple of times actually had the impression that it was closed, and stopped to get some pictures. That appears not to have been the case until recently. It's an odd, boxy building with opaque glass windows, and I don't think I would have cared to work there, unless you can see out better than you can see in. The place is now being demolished, and commenter Larry says a 7 Brew Coffee is to be built there.

As far as I can tell, A1A has rebranded, or was bought-by/merged-with Covenant Insurance Group, and is now at 7356 Garners Ferry.
Hook Fish & Chicken Of Columbia, 3600 River Drive: 14 January 2023 (Moved) 1 comment
Hook Fish & Chicken is aparently a chain of sorts, though it's not clear to me that all the locations are closely related. At any rate, they were the follow-on operation in this building at 3600 River Drive to Lamb's Bread. Going by their Facebook page, they moved in January of this year to the row of shops on Colonial Life Boulevard which houses The Melting Pot:
We are more than happy to announce we will be back up and running THIS Saturday, January 14th.
We are coming back stronger than ever with a new partnership with KrabKingz! Come and see us at 1410 colonial life blvd Columbia sc 29210!!
We know you missed us, because we missed you!!!!!!! See y’all Saturday!
I didn't realize when I took the pictures that they had moved, or I would have tried to get some shots of the new location.
Here is The State on the opening in March of 2022.
UPDATE 19 June 2023 -- Here is the Krab Kingz location on Colonial Life:
UPDATE 1 October 2024 -- Hope springs eternal. Now River Grill House Of Pizza. I can't find any online presence, but House Of Pizza restaurants are traditionally run by Greek families:
UPDATE 5 February 2025 -- River Grill & Pizza is now open:
Food Mart, 3309 Platt Springs Road / Privilege Pharmacy 3311 Platt Springs Road: Spring 2022 1 comment
I think given the complementary signage, these two storefronts on Platt Springs Road, next to the final location of Taco Cid, were clearly under the same ownership and probably run together. I can't find out much other information, but the last google reviews suggest they closed about this time last year.
Franco's New York Pizza, 3120 US-17 Business (Murrells Inlet): Early 2023 1 comment
Speaking of Krystal, Franco's was the Krystal follow-on in this Murrells Inlet storefront, and if you look closely you can still the Krystal signage label-scar.
I never tried this place out as I have plenty of go-to pizza joints on the Grand Strand, and I've always found pizza described as "New York" to be underwhelming. I can't find any media reference to the place closing, but looking on the dates of Google reviews suggest it closed early this year.
UPDATE 9 July 2023: To become Mulberry Street NY Pizzeria
Wallgreens Pharmacy, 2300 Decker Boulevard: Spring 2023 1 comment
This Walgreens was perhaps the least Wallgreens-looking store in the Columbia area, having been an Eckerd and then a Rite Aid until 2018. I had been in there a few times in each incarnation and it was fine, but it wasn't one of my go-to drugstores.
Commenter Andrew speculates that the issue here was the lack of a drive-through, but it's a corner spot, so I think they could have put one in somehow (though I did not think to look at the side area of the store). At any rate, the issue wasn't Walgreens oversaturation -- I believe the nearest one to here is either at Spring Valley Commons, or on Forest Drive, neither of which is particularly close.
