Columbia Closings   What's not in Columbia anymore

According to commenter JamesR, all the Frank's locations were acquired by Tire Engineers but before they could fully convert to that branding, Tire Engineers was bought by Mavis. There is a bit more information here.

I have noticed this place off and on over the years while driving US-1 between I-26 & I-20, because teal is one of the only "non-guy" colors I know, and one that I actually like.

I noticed last weekend that it was closed. The facebook page has nothing since the start of 2020, so I'm just going to use 2020 for the closing date.

I have noticed Nuttall Tire on Millwood over the years mainly for their Kilroy Was Here logo, and the odd warehouse-y building they were in (Anyone know what it was?). In December, they left their home of over 20 years to relocate into the old Dick Dyer Toyota dealership location on Two Notch.

ColaDaily has the story:

"We’ve outgrown the building and the parking lot," said owner, Stephen Nuttall. "We like to joke that the walls are expanding and contracting here. But it’s good to fight good problems."

I last wrote about this spot when it was (no longer) Premier Plus Motors.

Since that time, a Hertz rental resale lot set up operation there, and that may or may not be permanently closed now. All this is part of Chapter 11 for the company, something I had not heard about:

Hertz announced plans to temporarily close all 87 car sales locations in the U.S. on Wednesday.

Several individuals involved with the car rental giant said the company told employees of the news via a conference call on Tuesday. Representatives on the call detailed plans to cease operations at the locations on Thursday, Oct. 22.

Hertz said in a statement, "As part of our Chapter 11 process, Hertz has been working to right-size our fleet to align with current demand and meet the requirements of our lenders."

"Hertz has recently met its target to sell approximately 180,000 vehicles, and as a result is pausing the car sales program including temporarily closing corporate retail locations. Hertz has maintained the licenses for these locations and will evaluate its car sales program as it replenishes its fleet with new vehicles in 2021," the statement continued.

The report does not mention COVID-19, but that has to have been awful for car rentals.

Well, I don't have a lot to say about this. It was a carwash; it's closed.

But it was a bright sunny day, of which we have had too few lately, and it had an interesting look, so I took lots of pictures.

I *am* a bit bemused by the idea that you wouldn't bring a dirty car there...

As I drove past Dutch Square the other day, I noticed that the Goodyear location across from the cinema side of the mall had changed to a Tire Choice. Looking at pictuers on google, I see that as late as April 2018 it was still Goodyear, so it changed sometime after that.

I believe that closest I came to using this place as a Goodyear was once when I needed a headlight replaced (sealed beam) and they couldn't fit me in to the remaining time of the day. I think I ended up going to Pep Boys on Broad River and getting it done.

Commenter Thomas mentioned that the Taylor Street location of Pope Davis had closed, so I went to take a look, to find that true, and the building empty. It's definitely an interesting, older, location, as you can see from the doors and fixtures in the service area. The company remains in town, and it looks like the next closest location is probably on Assembly Street.

UPDATE 19 August 2023: The State says SC may make this a landmark:

Now, state Rep. Seth Rose, D-Richland, is hoping to cement the building as a Columbia landmark and redevelop it. Columbia’s Design, Development Review Commission gave the move initial approval Thursday.

I have noticed this building on Broad River Road for two things over the years. First, there are all the mirrors (and in fact I think it used to have more mirrors on the outside walls than it does now when they are mainly confined to the roofline), and second for the fact that one address did double duty as both a used car lot and a hair salon: One on the outside, and one on the inside.

RealtyTrac says the building was put up in 1987, with seems about right, and LoopNet has a really nice picture that confirms what I was remembering about the mirrors above.

I'm not sure about 2019 for the closing date, but it seems only fairly recently have I noticed the building vacant.

At one time, in a vanished building, this address hosted Mammy's Shanty restaurant.

The current building has been a number of car related businesses. Brooks Automotive and The Auto Club, Inc. were follow-ons in this spot to Prestige Hitech Autowerks. From this Facebook post, I think I can say that Brooks opened early in 2015. The inflatable Carfox caught my eye in May of 2015, which is when that set of pictures dates from. I assume, since they appear to have been co-located and presumably related, that The Auto Club dates from the same period.

I noticed on 1 March of 2020 (a rather dreary day) that they were gone as well.

I would expect another car operation to move in at some point, but not, I'm sure, until the current mess is sorted out.

UPDATE 10 October 2022 -- I'm not sure what Nutall has to do with this property as they are up the hill a bit, but the door sign suggests maybe they are working on this site. Anyway, I took some more pictures:

I noticed recently that Frank's Discount Tire on Fairlane Drive is now Mavis Discount Tire. I don't have any experience with either business, but I have to say Frank's had the nicer sign. Of course I'm a sucker for neon.
