Crystalized Healthy Hair Experience, 3902 Two Notch Road Suite B: 2023 (Moved) no comments
Crystalized Healthy Hair Experience has moved out of this storefront in Pinebelt Plaza (the Food Lion plaza), and apparently down to Midlands Shopping Center.
Boltinhouse Jewelers, 3015 Platt Springs Road: June 2024 3 comments
I don't see any information online about this closing, but given that they have been in business since 1980, I suspect retirement is a factor here.
I like the lions!
For now, the webpage is still up.

Sub Station II, 7101 Parklane Road: February 2024 (Branding) 9 comments
It looks like the Sub Station II on Parklane has disaffiliated from the chain and struck out on their own as Leo's Deli.
As nearly as I can tell from looking at the google reviews, this happened sometime around February 2024.
Dairy Queen, 1100 South Lake Drive: May 2024 6 comments
This Dairy Queen was located inside a Circle K, and apparently closed down in May of 2024. Looking at the Google reviews is amusing since they still have a bot account posting AI replies to reviews, going approximately like:
Reviewer: This place is shut down!
Bot: We're sorry we didn't delight, please give us another try!

212 Motors, 1255 Knox Abbott Drive: May 2024 (Changes) 5 comments
212 Motors was never really on my radar, but looking the pictures in their Google right-sidebar information they used to be a regular used car lot.
Now they seem to be moving to a fleet operation with loads of generic white pickup trucks, and no "regular" cars. I can't see any information about the change online, but something is definitely going on.

American Car Center, 1640 Airport Boulevard: 24 February 2023 1 comment
This location of American Car Center has a much less distinctive building than the one on Two Notch, but like that one was caught in the bankruptcy of the whole chain in February of 2023.
As Fortune put it:
American Car Center told employees the business was closing its doors, a day after it pulled a $222 million bond sale from the market, according to people familiar with the matter.
The used car retailer, which tends to target consumers regardless of their credit history, said in an email to employees on Friday the firm was ceasing all operations, closing its headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee, and that all employees would be terminated by the end of the business day, the people said. The headquarters has about 288 people.
The closure email came a day after the company sent another message to staff saying management and advisors had been working with lenders to improve liquidity and continue operations, the people said. American Car Center, which has more than 40 dealerships across 10 states, is owned by York Capital Management LLC.
Interestingly, both Columbia locations have electronic signs that are still active. However, I can tell you that as I took these pictures, it was neither 6:52pm nor 38 degrees...
Rue 21, 321 Forum Drive: May 2024 no comments
Well, that was quick! We've had some general discussion about the chain shutting down and all stores closing, but I expected I would still see a final sale going on when I went out to Sandhill today. In the event, not only was the store already closed -- it is already up for lease. (Though I do note that the branding is still up).
I meant to check out the Grand Strand locations recently, but did not quite get around to it.
BGR8 Martial Arts, 317 Royal Tower Drive: Late 2023 (Moved) no comments
Staying in the same area as yesterday...
BGR8 dojo was the follow-on in this roundish building to at the corner of Broad River Road and Royal Tower Drive to Ed Robinson cleaners. Judging from the state of construction at the site, it has been at least several months since they moved to 130 Hunter Village Drive, so I am just going to put a late 2023 date on this.
As for that construction, it appears that Brooklyn Express pizza is moving from Friarsgate Plaza into this building:
Discount Tire, 7948 Broad River Road: 30 March 2024 1 comment
This tire outfitter in Irmo near Friarsgate Plaza closed down at the end of March. I went by one time and saw they were storing a lot of vehicles there and wasn't sure they were closed, but the second time I actually read the note on the door, which announced the closure.
It's not the easiest lot to get in and out of, but I expect someone will take it up before too long.

Zesto, 1250 Chapin Road: 3 May 2024 2 comments
The wonder of Zesto is not that one closed, but that any are still open: Each location is like a step into 50 years ago, and we are lucky to still have such portals.
That said, this location, in Chapin is actually fairly new as such things go, having opened "only" 18 years ago. As for the reasons this one closed, WIS quotes the owner:
It’s just time for me to have a normal life. Same struggles as all mom-and-pop [stores]. Can’t get decent employees, food cost, etc. Times are changing.
There is also a State story here.
