The Carriage House / Liquids Gentlemen's Club, 5511 Forest Drive: 2008   27 comments

Posted at 10:16 pm in closing

I changed my mind about getting on I-77 today, and turned onto Old Forest Drive at the Wal Mart meaning to hop over to Percival. As I did so, I noticed that Liquids Gentlemen's Club was closed.

I don't know what this building was originally (you can see where some windows have been bricked over), but when I was first aware of it, it was The Carriage House. I may be wrong, but I think this was the first (and for a good while only) strip club in Forest Acres, though the town boundries are kind of odd, so I'm not absolutely sure it is now, or was then in the city limits. The building abuts what was once a viable strip mall at the corner of Forest Drive & Percival Road and which had some sort of convience store, a barber shop and a few other stores which I have long forgotten. It also had a Putt-Putt course about which I posted earlier.

After The Carriage House folded, Liquids moved in (though there may have been a gap). Although the location isn't great, I suspect that it already being zoned for a strip club was a big factor. Either The State or The Free Times did a profile on the owner. I can't recall his name, but he was somehow connected with the Columbia Rap scene, either as a performer or a promoter. I don't know if that business took off and he dropped the club, if they were closed down for some violation or other, or if it just wasn't profitable. Whatever the case, Liquids has dried up.

UPDATE 2 June 2010: Added the full street address to the post title. Also did some googling and found out that the Liquids was granted a liquor license on 22 Feb 2006, but that it was revoked on 14 Feb 2007 for violations of the conditions under which is was issued -- I suspect that had a good deal to do with the club closing. Also, oddly, the first link states that the building was planned to be demolished in 2007 for a hospital, something I never heard of (and which obviously didn't happen).

UPDATE 13 Oct 2010 -- Apparently The Carriage House was a legit restaurant before it went topless. Here's an ad from the 1975-1976 Southern Bell directory:

UPDATE 11 Feb 2011 -- the place continues to deteriorate to the point that there is now a warning letter from the sherrif on the door:

UPDATE 4 April 2012 -- The building continues to degrade, but on some days it's prettier than on others:

UPDATE 1 March 2018 -- This building was razed long ago to build the back parking lot for the new Panera/Petco plaza, but here are some pictures from 16 July 2011:

  1. Before it was the Carriage House (what a wonderfully sedate name for a strip club) it was called the Town & Country (another wonderfully sedate name for a strip club) but if you ask anyone over 40 about it they will refer to it as Titty City.

It went through many incarnations of style and attitude, but the great thing about it was -- it was always right there!

I miss it. I wonder where Cara is now...

  2. Well, I'm over 40, and never heard that. I like it though. Very catchy.

  5. I used to work in that strip mall for a short lived pizza delivery operation called Dino's Pizza. The slogan on our flyers were "Twice as nice two pizzas one price." It was opened from May 1983 and closed up the following August. The manager used to take cash from the til and spend it at the Carriage House instead of working. The Carriage House was indeed a crazy place.

  6. Hmmmm... The Carriage House, all I can say is I went there a time or 30. That was before I-77 was built, had to cut through Forest Acres from the east side to get there.

  8. I also wonder where Kara is she was the hotest chick in the place had a nice rack great botty and was cute. Loved the private dances in the back, they had a room and would shut the door if you had enough cach you could get most anything that was on the menu. No DJ they had a jukebox and the dancer would ask for money so they could play a song.

  9. My buddies used to go there when we were seniors back in the mid eighties. One guy was reeeeal partial to some girl name Rose.

From the way they described it, I pictured a much more elegant place, like a brick federal building with columns...not what looks like a Majik-Market.

  10. "Rose," huh? I, uh, have a friend who happened to drop in their a couple of times, and, uh, according to him, there was indeed a "Rose" working there in the late 1980s. She kinda reminded, uh, him, of a somewhat heavier Rita Coolidge. That is, long dark hair, olive complexion, almost American Indian looking. . . according to him.

  12. I went here one night in 1995 and it was just a dump! I still tell everyone I know about this place and still laugh my butt off. I was in SC for three weeks for processing at Ft. Jackson before overseas deployment. One night me and some new friends went here and couldn't believe what we saw. There wer maybe 2 other people in the place and the girls were scary. It was pouring rain outside and they had buckets everywhere, on the floor and on the stage, catching water from the ceiling. Also, it was the first time I had to tip a dancer before she danced, she needed the dollar for the jukebox. It was hilarious! I still have a matchbook from there... It says "EST 1977, the oldest and still the best in adult entertainment". It was entertaining for sure, I will never forget this place.

  13. A recent mentioning of this place prompted me to check this out and consequently I have the realization that this has been razed and is about to get a new development called Jackon Square with the following:

    Petco
    Panera Bread
    Mattress Firm
    Tijuana Flats
    Wing Stop

There is no doubt in my mind that this will be a breath of fresh air for this piece of land...

  14. @Andrew - Did you get the name of the new development correct, Jackon? Or should that be "Off", considering the locations history.

  15. The signage says Jackson Square (I got a pic of it and used that pic to list the aforementioned)...

  19. yes it was named " My Place " for about a yr... but even then everyone called it Carriage house... I went in there late 80s
during the day ..my size (Big Mike) prompted the female bartender or owner. ( her name escapes me)
ask me to help her with the door the upcoming weekend ...She said it was gonna be a big nite and she would pay me...the weekend came, I remember Rose that dude mentioned above ? and I remember... Only juke box music the dancers used for their sets..it was a disaster !!!
the Fort Jack Army dudes where on leave.. they would come in hoop and holler have a few beers...then leave for better things I guess ..the few days I worked I could see this place slipping ...the Dancers were drinking all the profits..lol . but hey I was 20 yes old and it was and experience...never 4 get The Carriage House!

  20. For the guys asking about Kara...that's me, not my real name of course. I think I was the only dancer in there who was actually working their way through college. That place was a blast. A lot of good times and nice regular customers that came their to see me.
I actually enjoyed dancing which showed in my u

  22. Didn't it also be called Sliver Dollar once? I remember going there when it was a small club after I graduated Nursing School in 1981 with a bunch of friends who also graduated that morning. Don D. and I slow danced to "He Stopped Loving Her Today."

  24. I was in there a few times in the early '90s ... what a place! A girl whose name escapes me now ... no one mentioned above, I'd remember ... long, thick black hair, green eyes, olive complexion ... she took me into the back room and shut the door and (if I remember right) for $50 gave me a bj that nearly blew the top of my head off! Best one of those I ever had! Then she disappeared ... heard from one of the other girls that one of the more, shall we say, disreputable "customers" was harassing her and she never came back. Wonder where she is now....

  25. Hey, HT, the description and timeline sounds like a girl called 'Rose.' Can't attest to all the other, though!

  27. I remember the Carriage House. Joe and Janet were the owners. There was a girl that I knew there that went by the stage name Sunshine. I lost contact with her and several of the other girls. I frequently went there.
