Riveras Mexican Food, 646 Sunset Boulevard: January 2017 2 comments
I was vaguely aware of this place, but never got around to checking it out. The stone facade is something you saw on a number of buildings from the 70s -- I don't think anyone does that anymore.
Apparently this little plaza was the site of a bit of martial history.

Griffin Homes & Properties, 1004 Charleston Highway: 2010 no comments
I was driving towards Triangle City a few weekends ago, and noticed a blank business sign in front of a nice brick house fairly near the intersection of Charleston Highway and Knox Abbott. As usual, when I actually get out and about, it was a good ways into the afternoon, so I was shooting against the sun, and it's a poor shot.
As best I can determine the only business here in recent times was Griffin Homes & Properties. Perhaps before that, it was still a residence.
Bogart's, 530 12th Street: 9 October 2016 (Moved) 1 comment
The current location of Bogart's in West Columbia has been purchased, and the building will be torn down to furnish more parking for the adjacent Zesto. According to West Metro News, the owner is looking for another location, but as of late August had not found one.
Update 8 November 2022 -- Changed "Moving?" in the post title to "Moved", add map icon. As commenter Aj mentions, Bogarts did, in fact, successfully move, and the new location is 2710 Emmanuel Church Road. Here are some pictures of the new location:
Boss Bull, Inc., 2910 Augusta Road: circa 2009 12 comments
A little googling reveals that this two building + house strip on US-1 in West Columbia was Boss Bull pawnshop.
You can see that there is a little pond out back and interestingly, the lot figures in the West Columbia debate about urban chicken farming:
Chairperson Unthank recognized Mr. Frank Barron
who has lived at 800 State Street for 10 years.
Mr. Barron stated that he has raised chickens
since he was nine years old. He wanted to inform
the public that chickens could be kept in a
sanitary manner. He has helped a young boy set up
a chicken house at 2910 Augusta Road, and invited
everyone to stop by and look at it. Half of the
chicken house is on a sled so that it may be
moved around to allow the droppings to fertilize
the grass. Mr. Barron believes that raising
chickens inside the city should not cause a
problem if the coops are properly kept.
My father always wondered if he had made the wrong choice between chicken farming and English teaching. Or so he said.
Golden Wireless / Quick Stop, 1202 Sunset Boulevard: Spring 2016 3 comments
Commenter James R points out that both businesses in the former Doza Rizen building on Sunset Boulevard are now gone.
I don't know anything about them except that Quick Stop apparently was listed as Stop & Shop in some cases, and that Golden Wireless was a mobile phone operation.

Skip's One Hour Cleaners, 1312 Sunset Boulevard: 2011 3 comments
I remember driving past this building some years ago and being pleased that such a classic design was still in service. I'm a sucker for anything with gull wings, and whatever this related type of design is called. The aerodynamics make it look like with a good headwind, it would hover like Sally Field.
China Dragon, 1607 Fairlane Drive: Winter 2015 3 comments
I'm not sure when this little takeout storefront co-located with the garage on Fairlane closed, but it's in the February 2015-2016 phonebook, and I think I would have noticed it previously if it had been closed longer than a few months, so I'm tagging it as winter 2015. Reviews are rather mixed, but they'd been there for a good while, so they must have been doing something right.
UPDATE 25 May 2016 -- Now Saffron, an Indian/Chinese/Mexican takeout storefront:

Columbia School of Karatedoo, 604 Meeting Street: 2013 2 comments
I noticed this little dojo on Meeting Street back in October when I was checkout out Conumdrum. It looks like maybe the name changed to simply Columbia School of Karate for a while, but the last phonebook listing is in the 2013 book.
Conumdrum Music Hall, 626 Meeting Street: 31 October 2015 4 comments
Conumdrum opened in the space formerly occupied by Bloomin' Idiots garden center, and based on the name, I reported it as a drumming studio when I did the closing for that business.
In reality, though I never got to check it out personally, it seems to have been a nice little eclectic music venue, and a five year run is not bad for a site neither in The Vista nor Five Points.
