I don't get out to Pontiac very often, so I was only vaguely aware of this little strip mall near Pontiac House Of Pizza, but it looks like there are a couple of vacancies right now.

The only time I ever ate at a Sam's Corner was Monday 30 June 1997.

I was living in Aiken at the time (and working in Augusta), but found out less than a week in advance that The Beach Boys were playing the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach that day. It was a rare small venue appearance, and I think many fans realized it was probably one of the last chances to see Carl Wilson on stage. In the event it was a bittersweet performance. Carl played most of the set seated and I think everyone in the audience could tell he was not long for the world, though he still sounded like an angel.

At any rate, when the show was over, with it not being a weekend, I was on the hook to be at work the following morning, so I fortified myself at the NMB Sam's with a hot-dog and coffee and made it back to Aiken (after further fortification with Waffle House coffee in Manning) in time to slip into bed half an hour before I had to get up. It was not something I could do now, and could barely do then.

Truthfully I was so focused on what I had to do that Sam's made little impression on me other than it was well lit, had an acceptable chili-dog and drinkable coffee.

I think the NMB location was the second for the chain, with one by the pier in Garden City being the first.

This location on US-17 in Pawleys Island came much later, and was, I think, something of a miss-step as the South Strand is a much different place from Myrtle Beach or even Garden City. I had noticed over the few years it was open that despite the proudly proclaimed 24 Hours in fact during the off season, it was rarely open past 10, and lately wasn't open at all except during the summer. I even did a post on the dark building called 25th Hour a few months ago.

On my last trip down over the Memorial Day week I saw that the place is now officially closed, even though they apparently had a plan to upfit the office space.

Crowson Stone Printing, 2840 Shop Road: 2013 (consolidated)   no comments

Crowson Stone is a name that was a constant presence when I was growing up. Since nobody in my family, and in fact nobody I knew ever needed a printer's services, I can only think this was because they (along with R. L. Bryan with whom I often got them confused) advertised constantly on WIS AM.

You don't really hear much of this anymore, but it used to be that a lot of non-retail operations would advertise on the radio. I guess the theory was that while it was unlikely that any given listener would need a printer (and back in the days before digital, that was no casual purchase!) keeping the name out there was good business in the "Oh yeah, I've heard of them, they should be OK" sort of way.

I'm not sure when this building, at the east end of Shop Road, was built. The February 1997 phonebook lists Crowson Ston at 819 Main Street, while the February 2006 book lists both Main Street and Shop Road, so this location probably came online in the early 2000s.

In early 2012 they were bought by Indexx Printing of Greenville, and by the February 2014 phonebook were listing the only the Main Street location again.

I did a closing for this Eagle's when it moved from it's old location further down SAR to this spot. Now it appears that they have left Irmo entirely, though they still have stores in the Midlands.

Commenter Rick sent this picture of his former business some months ago but I was holding onto it until I could dig up some current-ish pictures of the spot for comparison. I actually did take some, but as so often is the case, I can't lay hands on them right now. The ones I did find are from 2011.

Though I must have driven, or been driven, by this spot hundreds of times through the years, I can honestly say I have no recollection whatsoever of this building. I also have no recollection of Harper's being built despite always thinking of it as a "new" place.

Commenter Rick has recently mentioned that X Records was also located on this corner and also knocked down to build Harper's.

This is the third Qdoba in Columbia to close fairly recently, the other two being on Garners Ferry and Two Notch. WLTX has the story here.

I think the chain may be having troubles in general as google finds a number of closings nationally, and I have also noticed the Surfside location close. I will say that the few times I have tried Qdoba in general (I did not try any of the Columbia stores), I have not been too impressed. In particular, my burrito always fell apart.

I'm not sure whether the architecture of this building is meant to suggest Southwest or Brick Train Station...

UPDATE 26 August 2015 -- As mentioned by commenter James R, Salsarita's is now open in this location:

This KFC was gone as early as the February 1997 phonebook, which is the earliest I have at home. As you can see from the ad in the 1976 phonebook, at one time this was store #7 for Kentucky Fried Chicken in Columbia, and at this remove, it's easy to forget that the picture in the ad was that of a living man who still toured the country promoting Kentucky Fried Chicken, despite being unhappy with what corporate had done with his gravy.

Shakespeare Fish Market, 6301 Shakespeare Road: Early 2015   no comments

I've written about this building before here and here, though sometimes the address is given as 6303 Shakespeare instead of 6301 Shakespeare.

Driving by the other week, I noticed it was vacant again. I'm not sure when Shakespeare Fish Market closed, but there are reviews posted up through October 2014, so I'm erring on the side of caution and saying early 2015.

According to those reviews and this WLTX Golden Spoon video profile, the place was a takeout seafood operation, sourcing fresh seafood from Georgetown.

I had meant to do this post before Free Comic Book Day which was
2 May 2015, but that was not to be.

At any rate, as reported by commenter James R, Comic Nirvana has moved from in front of Best Buy in Lexington to
The Smith Centre just south of the I-20 Waffle House.

I have to say it's not an easy location to find. They have listing on the roadside marquee for the office plaza, but actually
locating the store is a bit of a puzzle. In the event, you can't see it from the default parking area in front, you have to dri
ve around back and duck into a little back nook. Hopefully they will have some more directional signs up soon, along with their
main storefront sign. In fact, they may by now as these pictures are a week or two old.

Well, I was sorry to see this. Hooligan's has been a long-time presence at Trenholm Plaza, and has continued the ice cream tradition that started in that location with Edisto Farms Dairy.

I didn't go to Hooligan's that often, but they were dependable, and had excellent ice (the chewy kind) for the drinks. At one time, when my eldest niece was in her terrible twos, Hooligan's was the only place my sister could take her out as it was kid friendly, and cranky-kid friendly.
