Payless Shoe Source, 4732 Devine Street: 9 November 2013 4 comments
This Payless shoe store was at the corner of Devine & Rosewood, not far from the old Taco Bell and the Rosewood Blockbuster.
One sign says that the store is relocating, but while I hope the employees were able to move, I think this is really just a call-out to an already existing other store.
I believe I still have a pair of shoes from Payless, though I'm not sure it was this store, that have lasted quite a few years. Of course, I only wear them to weddings and funerals, so there has not been a lot of wear & tear.

Palmetto Carpet Co., 610 Beltline Boulevard: 2013 (consolidated, moved) no comments
I noticed a sign on the door of Palmetto Carpet Co. near the intersection of Beltline and Devine the other day, and stopped to check it out. Unfortunately I did it rather poorly as I somehow failed to get a closeup of the door sign itself, and my memory fails on some of the details.
The gist was that Palmetto has joined forces with another flooring company and has moved to a consolidated location, the where of which escapes me...
UPDATE 9 December 2013 -- Here's the sign I mentioned. The new address is 4884-G Sunset Boulevard:
Hann Wendell & Associates / Hypnosis Information Line, 2507 Devine Street: 2000s no comments
Well, Hypnosis Information Line -- that's one of the more interesting listings I've seen. Unfortunately I don't know anything else about it. Or maybe I did and I've been told to forget..
LoopNet says this nice old home was built in 1930 and now has 8 offices. This link says it was forclosed on at some point, but since it also says it sits on 44 acres and was built in 1992, I'm not sure I give that any credence.
Anyway, the key point is that it is soon to become Silver Spoon bakery and coffee, something that Devine Street really could use.
The Whitney Hotel, 700 Woodrow Street: Summer 2013 3 comments
As Sir Elton said, it's "The Circle Of Life". This building in the heart of Shandon at the corner of Devine & Woodrow was a condo back in the 1980s and in fact one of my cousins lived there for a while. Then at some point it became a botique hotel (catering to exactly whom I never understood), and now it's to be condos again.
The State had the story recently on what is to become "700 Woodrow". Of course, at this point it's a pretty old building, and it's going to need a lot of work to become "luxury apartments". It appears said work has already started.
Womens Fitness Works LLC / De Vine Fitness/ Kitchen Vision Inc, 3211 Devine Street: 2000s no comments
Here's the property listing for this little suite on Devine almost at the intersection with Millwood, and more or less across the street from the former Rice Music House.
I'm inclined to think the two fittness operations may have been connected, but when any of these were there is unclear. The names come up in google, but they are not in the last several years of phonebooks..

Round Robin, 2800 Devine Street: 5 January 2013 1 comment
Women's apparel shop Round Robin at the corner of Devine and Maple closed early in the new year. Not being a frequent shopper for women's clothes, I'm afraid I was unaquainted with the store, though I have managed to mangle its name onto a certain hamburger chain a number of times..
Not to worry though -- after a month's hiatus the storefront will be reopening tomorrow under a new name (Devine Robin) and new ownership but with the same concept and staff.

Lark, 614 Holly Street: late December 2012 no comments
He rises and begins to round, He drops the silver chain of sound, Of many links without a break, In chirrup, whistle, slur and shake. For singing till his heaven fills, ‘Tis love of earth that he instils, And ever winging up and up, Our valley is his golden cup And he the wine which overflows to lift us with him as he goes. Till lost on his aerial rings In light, and then the fancy sings.
The Pilates Studio, 4830 Forest Drive #18: December 2012 (moved) 6 comments
I've never actually been really sure what Pilates is. I know it's hard to spell and seems like it would be hard to do as well. At any rate, this small studio in Trenholm Plaza, next to 32 Degrees Yogurt is now gone, probably as of the end of the year.
