Blockbuster Video Store #45070, 2110 Clemson Road: March 2012 11 comments

Posted at 12:58 am in closing

Well, the once mighty Blockbuster chain continues to implode, and this store at The Crossings shopping center on the corner of Clemson and Hard Scrabble finally went under earlier this month.

I was surprised that it hung on as long as it did, especially after the closing of the adjacent Food Lion last year. Of course, I'm a little surprised now to see any Blockbuster still open -- It's kind of like going fishing and reeling-in a trilobite.

Commenter Joey points to this story about the store closing and if I recall correctly, commenter Andrew pinpointed the exact date in a comment I can no longer find.

(Hat tips to commenters Joey & Andrew)

UPDATE 18 October 2012 -- Commenter Andrew notes below that this storefront was wrapped in butcher paper and marked "Top Secret". Well, by the time I got by there, the secret was out: It's to be a gym:

  1. Lol, just because the stores are closing does NOT mean Blockbuster is imploding. In fact, now that DISH has taken over, it is part of a Fortune 200 Company with a very bright future. I have DISH, and when a DISH coworker told me about the new Blockbuster @ Home movie package, I was very interested. It gives subscribers access to more than 100,000 titles, ranging from movies to TV shows to games! DISH also adds an extra 20 HD movie channels to your regular lineup, AND gives you different ways to get/exchange titles! If you still like getting movies from the remaining stores, you can go that route. You can also get titles by mail, or access the thousands of titles available through streaming! I've never had this much fun getting movies, and have never had this kind of selection available. Blockbuster is alive and well, and has a powerful friend in DISH!

  2. When Blockbuster at the intersection of Forest Drive and Sunnyside closed last year, Ted linked an article on that post indicated that they were on the brink of Chapter 7 before DISH decided to buy them.

What's weird about this one is that the signage on the store itself when it was winding down was for a moving sale. I went through Northeast Richland mentally and didn't think of a spot it could go. I got in touch with Blockbuster corporate in an attempt to see if they knew where it'd go, but was told something along the lines of: "We understand you want to know where your Blockbuster store is going to be, but we don't have specific information about what you requested" so it seems to me that it was a liquidation sale disguised as a moving sale.

There have been a couple of other cases where folks claim to be relocating but didn't have a place locked down and that doesn't usually bode well. Bassett Furniture House (281 Park Terrace Drive) planned to move but didn't know where and they never got a location locked down. Ditto for when <a href="http://columbiaclosings.com/wordpress/?p=2535" Burger Time left Dutch Square.

  3. Same for Schlotsky's on Parklane.

I suspect in some cases a place will lose its lease and cast about for options which don't always materialize.

  4. I remember coming to this place with family when I was a kid. We lived in the Northeast in the early 00s when I was in middle (Summit) and high (Spring Valley). We stopped by this place often. We lived across the street from where they eventually built the Village at Sandhill. We shopped at the Food Lion often as well along with McDonald's and Wendy's. I miss that time and then Blockbuster was booming. Towards the end of high school though we stopped going to video stores and started with Redbox and Netflix. I can see them reinventing themselves to be an entertainment store.

  5. Being an ex Blockbuster employee I must say as far as actual stores go Blockbuster is far from alive and well. Dish will continue to use the Blockbuster brand going into the future with its digital content but as far as bricks and mortar there is really no future. As stores come up for lease renewal most if not all will be shut down. The only hope for any stores would be the ability for Dish to sell its products and services at those locations. With their hopes of starting their own cellphone service sometime later this year a hybrid Blockbuster/Dish Mobil Store could be a strong possibility. Time will tell but even DVDs as a form of media delivery may have its own short life going forward. Even game manufactures with their new systems are changing how you can use and share games. Blockbuster had its day in the sun but times have changed and not keeping up was the biggest mistake.

  6. I'm still surprised that the Blockbuster in Irmo is still open. You hardly ever see any cars in the parking lot. The only time I go there is to root through the 4/$20 5/$20 used racks. They even had a sidewalk sale a week or so ago for all of the used flicks and still only a few vehicles in the lot. I have no clue how they are paying the bills.

  7. Homer, your thoughts towards the Irmo Blockbuster (store #92554, 7249 Saint Andrews Rd) are comparable to mine at with regard to the remaining Lexington location (Store #92581, 509 W Main St). In relation to the road, the Lexington store sits perpendicular. The main entrance doesn't have any signage. The side facing the road does. Consequently, I get said store mistaken for closed when it is still ticking. If you go into bing! maps (maps.live.com) and type in the Lexington address, you can see what I'm talking about myself if you view the location from a bird's eye view.

  11. So when Planet Fitness moved in an overhauled this space, everything that was there at the time left (to include the ObdySmith Fitness that had moved into this spot) but now Pet Supplies Plus appears to be moving in...
