Ben & Jerry's, 2901-B Devine Street: mid 2000s 13 comments
For some reason, as we saw here, and here and here, Columbia isn't real friendly for creameries whose name isn't Baskin Robbins. I don't know why this is, but I would say that this Ben & Jerry's location on Devine Stret lasted fewer than five years.
I find there's a certain Zen purity to ice creams like Bryer's Coffee (ingredients: Cream, Coffee, Sugar) and that going much more "upscale" than that yields diminishing returns. I certainly like Ben & Jerry's ice cream -- it just doesn't seem to have the magic qualities for me that some ascribe to it. It was nice having an ice cream store in the area for its own sake though. I'm probably missing something, but with the passing of this store, I can't think of any in the Devine corridor or Five Points. I know there's a Sandy's near the college, and a Coldstone or Marble Slab in the Vista, but that's really another market area.
UPDATE 20 January 2012 -- Looks like Ben & Jerry's was the middle store (2901-B) in this three storefront building, not the end store (2901-C). Here's a better picture of their actual location (which became Hardcore Tennis:

Unless that's changed... The Ben & Jerry's in right next door in the same building! It move from the corner to more towards the middle of the building.

We went there a couple of times, when we'd get a free token when we ate with my son at Bird's, and also on their national free scoop day. I guess since you can get Ben and Jerry's at the grocery store, I never bothered to go much. Speaking of ice cream shops, the Baskin Robbins moved out of Dutch Square into the Dunkin Donuts on Broad and Bush River. Boy, Dutch Square has deteriorated. You could do 50 entries on that place in the past 15 or so years. From an Irmo perspective, we've enjoyed going to Gatsby's. It has that old parlor feel to it

Ben & Jerry's moved one bay over next to Birds. It is still there, just not on the end cap.

OK, I've walked all the way around that building. If Ben & Jerry's is there, I sure don't see it.

I believe Ben & Jerry's did move for a while into the smaller location next door, but they've closed down since then. Last I saw, Simply Savory (the business next door) was going to take it over.

No Ben and Jerrys on S Main either. Maybe there was one in the strip where Moes and the Varsity is.

yeah they were in there with Moes and Shane's Rib shack. I know Shane's didn't last and I guess Ben and Jerry's didn't either.

I used to go in to that Ben and Jerry's and get a Capochillo on a regular basis. I don't know why they closed. The place always smelled awesome, especially when they were baking brownies or other items in the kitchen.
I recall when they moved into the smaller space next door. About a year ago I was in the neighborhood and stopped by to get a Capochillo. When I saw the were closed, it kind of ruined the whole rest of the day. A call to the number they had previously held got a "disconnect" notice. A call to 411 yielded no new locations in the Columbia area. :(
