"Rolls or cornbread?"

I snapped these two pictures driving by Lizard's Thicket on Beltline; perhaps I can get some better later. At any rate, the chain is renovating this old Shoney's building, and it will be closed until that is done.

I believe the nearest other Liz is the one on Forest Drive, also in a former Shoney's.

UPDATE 9 April 2019 -- I don't have a picture, but this location has been open again for a good while.

UPDATE 24 July 2020 -- Closed again, due to COVID-19 staffing problems as is the Airport Boulevard location:

UPDATE 10 February 2021 -- Open again, again:

UPDATE 31 January 2022: As mentioned in the comments, closed again for staffing issues.

UPDATE 5 July 2023 -- Now Moctezumas:

  1. When this was a Shoney's back in 1973, my parents took us kids there during the big snow storm. It was one of the few places open or that had electricity. We ate in our car at the uh.. under the.. THE PLACE YOU ORDER FOOD FROM YOUR CAR. NO, not a drive thru.
It was outside where the car hops brought the food to your car.

On another note, I'm hearing and reading a lot about the new "3-D Printers" that are available now, you've heard of them right? Well I'm wondering if a 3D printer can make ink cartridges for a 2-D printer.

Also, speaking along that line, I told my Son the other day that I never want to kept alive in a vegetative state, dependent on "Some machine" and "Fluids" from a bottle to keep me going.
So he unplugged my computer and threw out my bottle of tequila. Damn Kids, what are you gonna do?

  2. Sorry, typo, should have said "I never want to be kept alive"
That sentence was missing the word "be" before kept alive.

  3. Yesterday's The State had a blurb indicating that this has reopened in the last couple of weeks...

  5. They have actually been closed for a few months now. I don't have high hopes about a reopening at this point.

  6. WLTX has reported a NEW Mexican Restaurant will be taking over this Lizards Thicket building. They have the story all wrong saying that this particular LT has been there for decades...wrong. It was a Shoney's for quite some time. Shoney's was there first since the 1970's though I know at least the early 2000's. Someone at WLTX needs to do their research a tad better and learn their Columbia history before they print things like this. I don't remember though where the first Lizards Thicket was here in town..unless it's the one on Elmwood where Krystal Burgers was I know in the early 80's? but I don't remember for sure now.

  7. I have a recollection of having dinner with my folks at this particular Lizard's Thicket back in the 90s so I know it goes at least that far back...

  8. Here is the original Lizard's Thicket. It's a tax place now, but severa remodels ago, you could look at it and still see the building pictured on their history page.

  9. I thought that Shoney's was still here at Midlands Tech. around 2000 or 2001 before Lizards Thicket took over...but there's still one Shoney's left on Garners Ferry. Not sure if it's run by the same people or not. I never really paid all that much attention to this place. But someone at WLTX has their info. all wrong about this particular LT.

  10. When I did the closing for the Shoney's here, apparently I looked in the 1985 phonebook and didn't find it.

  11. The first Shoney's /Big Boy I can remember was the one over in West Columbia near the old Burger King that was next to it. I think that was either the late 60's or very early 70's. Not sure though the year the on on Garners Ferry was built though. I thought that Shoney's over at Beltline's Tech, was still around in 2000 or 2001, but I could be wrong. Speaking of "Big Boy".. didn't Douge Broome get in trouble from Shoney's for naming his place Doug Broome's Big Boy Drive-in, and had to change it to "Big Joy"?

  12. The original building of this was torn down however many years ago and rebuilt as the one you see now.

  13. I don't think so, just remodeled.

Look at the picture on the Lizard's site vs this.

The grate & six windows are unmistakable.

  14. I have the above mentioned WLTX article.

Apparently the recently closed & featured here Moctezuma is what is planning to move into this spot...
