Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits & BP Station, 201 Harbison Boulevard: March 2008   11 comments

Posted at 12:47 am in closing

I'm not entirely sure I have the title for this post right. Googling "201 Harbison" Columbia brings up Popeye's as the most common hit, but also suggests the place may have been Harbison Exxon, or Taco Bell. In fact the place does look like it had gas islands. Was it an Exxon convenience store with an attached restaurant which flipped from Taco Bell to Popeye's perhaps?

I suppose if I paid more attention, I would remember, but I don't eat at either restaurant, and I would never stop for gas at that point on Harbison -- it was after 6 when I took these shots, and Harbison was still a real mess. I had gone out to take some pictures of Circuit City, and it was still really difficult to get where I wanted to go in the area across all the traffic.

UPDATE 17 March 2012: Updated the closing date to "March 2008" based on research in the comments. Also added a note that the attached gas station was a BP in the post title.

UPDATE 26 January 2022: Updating tags and adding map icon.

  1. Ted, it was a Taco Bell before Popeyes. Both were one of those fast food/gas station combos.

  2. OK, that's the kind of thing you see on Interstate exits (though it's pretty far down from I-26..)

  3. I see that a good bit around Columbia. There is/was a Popeye's/ gas station combo on Garners Ferry up towards Beltline. Then there is the BK/ gas station near the corner of Pineview Rd and Garners Ferry.
You're right that it is odd to see them away from Interstates though. For some reason it's common in Columbia however. Could all of these be owned by the same person?

  4. This was a Hess station at some point and did indeed have a Taco Bell built in. But at that point, I don't know if it was still a Hess.

  5. This was originally built and constructed in
97 or 98 by a company called ConHugeCo, LLC ..
the Constan car wash family .. they also
operated the one on the corner of Gervais and
Harden .. right down the street from the
original ConStan car wash .. The family also
at last check (5 plus years back) operated one
(a car wash) in the Triad area of NC They were
all Exxons at the time of construction and were sold in 2001 or 2

  6. Anyone remember when they had a popeye's on Decker in front of the skating rink. I think it became an Arby's and then a whole bunch of other things.

  7. I remember they closed the taco bell that was in the mall foodcourt and opened up inside this gas station. Not sure what they were thinking. I guess rent was cheaper.

  8. This station was added to GasBuddy in August 2007, and listed as closed in July 2008. Many stations have been closed for a while before they are marked as closed, so replace "Mid 2000s" with "2008".

This was a BP, not an Exxon, according to the MSL entry.

When someone else marked it as closed on July 8, 2008: "This station and restaurant (Popeye's) are closed and boarded up. I am hoping it will reopen in due time."

  9. Found this clip from a March 21, 2008 The State article that backs Joey:

    Popeyes, BP exit Harbison

The Popeyes Chicken & Biscuit restaurant on Harbison Boulevard shuttered this week.

Franchise-owner Carolina Convenience Corp. said Popeyes closed because of lackluster sales .

"The traffic count there, past Olive Garden, is about 20,000. While by the mall, it's about 45,000," said franchise president Madhu Shrivastava."

Shrivastava closed the nearby BP convenience store for the same reason.

The remaining area Popeyes restaurants are in Lexington, southeast Richland County and West Columbia.

Those of you interested in Popeyes can have at it at the following sites: 7540 Garners Ferry Rd, 2832 Augusta Hwy (West Columbia), 1860 South Lake Drive (Red Bank)

  11. The taco bell didn't actually shut down - it moved to a new free standing building on Lake Murray Blvd. Then the Popeye's moved in.
